June, Blooms 3

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

We are well over the suggested 100 marker for starting a new thread. Bonnie, you have to come back and post again that new sinningia and anyone else who recently posted a nice pic!

Now, I have to go find a new plant to start the continuation of June blooms and visiting.

Pretty Gail!!!

A very rich looking AV Gail, nice! I am finally going to get a day to play plants today so I hope to come and add some more pictures to the latest June blooms thread later!

I'm going to have another throwing out party on AV's today! I've enjoyed all the mini's that I grew from seed but there is no way I'm keeping 20 little no name violets! I'll keep a couple that had nice blooms and the rest are going. LOL

This is the second strep that has bloomed for me that grew from the mixed gessie society seeds ... nothing to write home about but it's a strep I grew from seed so it's good!!

Looks like I'm also going to toss my much loved Silverglade Oyster plant .... for the last two months every bloom that comes on is brown in the center and the blooms are flat and boring, never really developing fully. I've isolated it and treated it with a couple of things after completely disbudding it and now here it is blooming again with the brown centers!!

Anyone know what this is or how to fix it before I just toss it out??

Thanks, Brenda

Brenda: What a shame you have to throw out good plants. I'm wondering if there's a nursing home or assisted living facility or maybe a retirement home you could donate them too? Some of the elderly residents might jump at the chance to grow a plant. You really should call around and see if anyone would be interested in a donation of your lovely babies.

I think violets just get tired after a couple of years........sometimes it is better to just stick one leaf if you really want it.

Lin, it is harder than you think to give away african violets. I tried it several times and then the phone rings that someone needs more food for it.........and a million questions from people who have never grown an african violet wanting to know what to do.

Now, if it were just a matter of giving them away and that was the end of it, I would do more giving away of violets.

Kennebunk, ME(Zone 5a)

WOW, I made it *lol*
I feel like I have been gone for centuries *lol*
I have been lurking and following everything but just haven't been at the "picture computer" forever. This requires me to sit on my butt on my bed and just take a few ME minutes. Very few of those these days with summer, the surgery, plants etc.
Everything is wonderful, never been better and I'm FINALLY get my mind/body and soul back in order. Been rough for a bit but finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel so they say *lol*

OK, Sinningias are unchartered water for me, however I do have a couple and am really enjoying them. I got my very first bloom and totally fell in love with Mother's Day. I find I am especially attracted to the Eumorpha type blooms.

Here is her "profile" shot. I just love her chubby little belly.
The flower has since gone by..........but guess what?.............she's going to have babies! I selfed her and now have a fat seedpod forming :)
Lots of fun playing seeds this fall/winter :)

One last picture, a tribute to Ness's Jesse. This was her in her glory the night before the box fan fell on her and chopped her up like lettuce.
Needless to say, I put a leaf down *lol*

There have been alot of casualties lately as I'm losing alot to rot as I have never grown gessies during the summer (only found you ladies last October) and needless to say...........summer growing is ALOT different than winter growing. I was really letting the casualties get to me and was really getting down but I'm trying to just focus on what does make it and appreciate the tough ones that do survive and not get down about the losses. Not mourning losses is a tough one for me but I'm trying *lol*

Everyone has had some AWESOME pictures and I've been SO enjoying all your stories etc. I'll try to be a little more active now on :)

XOXO
Me :)

So good to see you back, Miss Kim!!! Glad you are feeling better........you must have a very high thresh hold of pain as you have been a busy gal after your surgery.

I love love the Ness' Jesse.......one of the prettiest and most unusual violets I have seen.

I can't move this morning as the 'granny' in me has taken over! We fed 200 people on the streets in CC last night along with giving them the hygiene bags we made. That was easy and rewarding hanging it out......the carrying of all the materials (shirts, socks, etc) on the truck was what killed my back..........I think a box of hygiene bags weighed over 30 lbs.

Simply cannot believe that you can grow such gorgeous peonies! Zone envy setting in on south Texas with this heat.

So happy you are back with us!

Wonderful pictures, Kim!

I am baking for my bird today. Yesterday, Hubby and I went out to lunch and went to Barnes and Noble. Nice to get out of the house after 2 1/2 weeks. I am trying to heal carefully.

I have the new shelves in place and I will hopefully repot and water a lot of violets today.

Kennebunk, ME(Zone 5a)

Thank you Gail :) I've missed everyone too.....so much!
I didn't think the peonies would open this year as Gram says it takes 3 to 4 years when you move them for them to bloom but it's only been 2 years so I wasn't sure. This is the first year I see blooms on them so I'm quite tickled.
Here is another pretty blooming today...........Oxalis Lasiandra. One of my very favorite Oxalis.
I used to collect Oxalis but have since parted with my collection other than my absolute favorites.

Hello everyone! Excuse me for butting in. I have a quick question, if I may. Could someone suggest reliable online sites for Sinningias. I have a couple, fell in love, and am interested in acquring more. Thank you.

Kennebunk, ME(Zone 5a)

I would recommend Dave's Violets.
His stock is low right now but he's the most reasonable priced and nicest selection that I have found.

Hope that helps :)

Jsxtiger,

Here is a link that has alot of pictures (for the ones Dave doesn't have pictures of) of various Gesneriads.

Just scroll down to sinningia and they are all in alphabetical order.
I LOVE this site when I need pictures of things.

Gee, thanks Kim as I had lost that link for pictures. Yes, I love to order sinningias from DAve.

I should be working on plants or doing something constructive but too tired. (LOL)
So I ran around with camera as I love others' pictures!
Am amazed this orchid is this happy in the heat on the front porch?

Fantastic photos, Gail! That Sinn. is precious! I love them all.

I am worn out after cooking for Chipper and then watering violets. Too tired to repot. I will do that soon. Resting now, time for a nap.

I took a couple of new pictures this morning.
