Help with Moms yard :o)

(AnjL) Fremont, CA(Zone 9b)

yep, home again tomorrow :o( dr's orders :o( my dr hates me.....lol! gave me a shot in the hind end yesterday AND a shot in the arm! both areas still hurt :o(
its punishment.....go outside and sit on the porch and just look to see all that needs to be done, but no energy or stamina to do any of it :o(

I did plant a few things this week....scooting on my hind end along the front walk way to finish putting in plants that I was trying to plant when the heat stroke hit me. just that little bit wore me out big time!

I cant even go in the back yard during the day, too much sun :o( so I have no idea what my garden beds back there look like! will get DH to bring out a flood light next week so I can see better at night and maybe do a little work in the cool night air....need to wait for strength and stamina to come back first.

guess I gotta garden via internet for now....so post those pix! lol!

This one I think is the only Sunflower that has come up.

I will send you more tomorrow after I get them all sorted out. So far it only looks like one is not going to make it. The one that was badly root bound.

The Veggies aren't doing to good. I think they may have had too much water before Cheryl drilled the drainage holes.

But I have tomatoes and strawberries growing good.

Heat stroke is not good, take care of yourself better, and learn by this.
I have done it too. And learned early morns or late eves, when its real hot. Grew up in So. Calif. also lived in Nevada for a time was alot younger then. LOL "No way now"
Waiting for rest of Pics, MOM. LOL

Oh! I love the puppy pix tills! :o)

wow mom, looks like those morning glories grow good there too! I cant get rid of them here! lol!
you WILL need to watch them and not let them go to seed, or you'll have morning glories everywhere! lol! just try to train them up the car port pole and along the car port near your porch. heck they will probably cover your entire car port given half a chance! lol! but try to keep them over the cement area, so if they seed...well, hopefully they wont grow in cement! lol!

need more pix of the front beds! I wish I could fly up there and see it all! lol!

any of the bulbs coming up yet? caladiums, day lilies, calla lilies and bleeding heart should be popping up :o)

Heres what I had bloom for me this week.........after a LONG wait...ONE of my 23 brugs is finally blooming! yippee! oh and the scent? smells like lemon cookies baking :o) YUMMY!

here is a close up of one of the blooms....my hand in the pix to help you comprehend the SIZE of that bloom! lol! HUGE!
This Brugmansia is only about 2 1/2 feet tall, and the blooms are almost touching the ground! lol!
this one is called H.Gold...cant remember what the h stands for! lol!

Wow AnjL take care of yourself. That sun stroke is nasty. I passed out in a strawberry field on day when I was about 12 and it took years before I could go out in the sun and not get sick to my stomach. Wear a hat!

Rochester, WA(Zone 7b)

I want some of those flowers Anjl!
Here are some more Pictures.

You know me I am not much on talking especially when I still don't have a clue where things were planted. When are you going to let me know?

Rochester, WA(Zone 7b)

I think I will send you the disc so you can look at all of the pictures. Too many to put everything up on site.

This one is of the only sunflower I have seen come up.

Can't find any of the front beds right now will try to sort better later.

Heres one right by the house.

Anjl's mom, That first picture you posted today is a weed and I don't think that small one is a sunflower. Their leaves are rounded and more fuzzy like.

(AnjL) Fremont, CA(Zone 9b)

true :o) pull that weed out!
I thought it was maybe the yellow bush we planted along your neighbors drive? but taking a second look...she's right! weed! (with yellow flowers)
also may have some grass coming up in the bed along the front of the house...so you may want to watch those and if no leaves...then yank them out.

I''m not sure if brugs will do good in your area. I can take a cutting and start rooting it for you....but if you do have one there, its a bush type that you would have to cut down and bring inside in the winter...lots of work.

maybe wait til I get up there and build a mini green house for you :o) lol!

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

Re Brugs: Most people here overwinter them in their garages successfully.

(AnjL) Fremont, CA(Zone 9b)

hmmm, no garage there, just a car port. maybe if there is room in her storage?
mom...whats in your storage shed!? lol!

Rochester, WA(Zone 7b)

a lot of stuff. Incidently that yellow flowering thing at the end of the bed is NOT a weed. You planted it. I am not pulling it.

Don't think any of the stuff that came up are grass or weeds. I will wait and see.

If the one I thought was a sunflower isn't one than I guess none of them sprouted. Will have to try again next year.

Hugs

(AnjL) Fremont, CA(Zone 9b)

the ones in the front bed next to the house should all be sunflower seeds. I dont remember planting anything else there. I'll go back and look at my notes :o)
where is the yellow flowering thing? is that in the bed next to neighbors driveway? if so, it is the bush....

Rochester, WA(Zone 7b)

Yes, it is right next to the neighbors driveway. Don't know the name of it but I know you planted it.

I pulled some of the ones in the bed next to the house that appeared to be grass. And some under the bench. I am going to get some Round-up to take care of that d*** bush under the bench. Maybe I can kill it off.

Mom

(AnjL) Fremont, CA(Zone 9b)

no, not round up!!
it will kill off all the thyme too! try to get some stuff that you paint onto the stump and kills the stump...
but no round up! not ever! lol!

Poulsbo, WA(Zone 8a)

Mom, NOOOOO

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

You can round up selectively (cut the bush to a stump and then paint it on). Roundup is not so bad as some things. It does break down after awhile. The key is just to use it selectively. Of course, I don't use Roundup, but I'm coming around. May try it to see if I can't start reigning in the ivy at the front of my property.

(AnjL) Fremont, CA(Zone 9b)

well, here is the problem with round up :o)

the stump was cut all the way down,( but keeps trying to grow back!) and it is right under where we put her bench...smack in the center of the yard.
so we covered the stump with mixture of soil/compost and pea gravel... and then planted thyme in the mixture so that it will grow under her bench and cover that entire area.

so if she puts roundup, it will kill of what we are trying to get growing there lol!

thinking sis or DN can come over and cut off what is growing back....move the soil mixture and paint the no-grow stuff on the stump...then once it dries you can put soil back and let thyme cover it up...
let me check with dh on the no-grow stump stuff. weve used it many times at the cabin and it works well.

Gate (Rochester), WA(Zone 7b)

Let me know the name of that no-grow stuff. I will check at Home Depot when I stop by there for some other materials. Will see if I can get DS to take bike 'road-trip' to cut & paint it....
And don't pull up that yellow bush! You want to buy another one?!? Hey, maybe another one can go where the root bound guy that's not making it is? no?
Way past bed-time for me!
Night

(AnjL) Fremont, CA(Zone 9b)

bush would be too big for where the dying one is... maybe find a smaller perrineal type plant to put there...
small evergreen flowering shrub?
Hey...do hibiscus do well in her zone? maybe a hardy hibiscus?

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

Sun, right? I think hardy hibiscus would do okay with a good mulch. Rock rose (there are some smaller varieties) would do great, as well. They are tough and seem to do okay in the clay.

(AnjL) Fremont, CA(Zone 9b)

yes, its full sun area...when the sun is shining :o)
I think a hardy hibiscus would look great there :o) will try searching for one for ya mom :o)

Rochester, WA(Zone 7b)

Okay, no Round-up. I will wait for Cheryl and David.

Mom

(AnjL) Fremont, CA(Zone 9b)

thanks! :o) I'd hate to have a bunch more dead stuff in there! lol!

what do you think about a hardy hibiscus?

http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/137277/

or

http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/163372/

we can plant in the spot where the root bound guy is petering out :o) would fill in nicely at the end of that bed.... JLMK, I can try to get a cutting and ship to you. (DONT go out and buy one! lol!)

Rochester, WA(Zone 7b)

Or how about a Crysanthemum. I think I would like it better. It is a fall and winter blooming plant.

Mom

Gate (Rochester), WA(Zone 7b)

What's the name of that stump killer paint stuff? Want to go to HD tomorrow after work. What does a Crysanthemum look like? Tried to search for on this slow-mo computer. Gave up! lol

(AnjL) Fremont, CA(Zone 9b)

DH doesnt remember name of it. look for tar based or stuff that you have to drill holes and pour into the holes. ours is up at the cabin :o(

(AnjL) Fremont, CA(Zone 9b)

http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/81032/

mums :o)
I have a bunch in pots here...never tried to divide roots, but I can give it a try :o)
what colors you want? I have peach...and a darker maroon...also lighter pink?

Nixa, MO(Zone 6a)

Just been lurking here. I live by Roundup back here. But just to kill the grass around planters and chainlink fence so I only have to weedeat once or twice a year.

PeaFowl--shame on you. Don't you have any Great Grandma Leslie blood in you? Chrysanthemum--Mums (lots of small petals)
