Patti - that is usually what Sango kaku is called. I don't have it - have Beni kawa instead. Cool MG Thom. Good luck with the installation, Jo Ann!

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

congrats on the jm ge - is it a viridis? looks like it - I have two of them one for the front and one for the back of the house.
Evie both on mine are in full sun and do great - really doesn't need special attention same with crimson queen.
Patti I have two coral barks or sango kaku. Both do good here although a lot of folks have trouble with die back from winter. I also have a beni kawa and it is a baby so it does not match up with sango just yet. What was the $ on the shirazz? i paid 350.00 and it is doing great. There is a thread on this on the jm link and everyone is very happy with it so far.

Bill I don't know the JM by anyother neme than Spring Delight.
It's leaves are light yellow green with red tips in spring.
They will be leafed like that when the Red Rhodies are bloming, nice combination I thought.
The tree is sweet, I love to watch it move in the slightest breeze

delph's - these guys are over 6 ft tall - is that normal - everything in this bed seems to be mutant in height

Those Stellas look way nicer than the ones EVERYbody seems to grow around here, Wha - softer and more open...

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

I just checked it out.
http://www.bcnursery.com/viewItem.asp?ItemID=80585-07&UnitCde=1&Desc=MAPLE%20SPRING%20DELIGHT%20%20%20%207%20GAL&VendorDesc=

It sounds very nice. How much sun will it get where you are planting it? looks like is calls for full to part sun according to the link. Looked like it was going under trees, although in your case this is a green variety and shade would not be an issue as shade would only make it greener in the summer, should not affect spring growth and the red edges.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

amethyst - thx - i just looked and it may not be a stella. I had some DL in a bed that did not get much sun and moved them around the yard. This is one of that batch - i know i have stella along the driveway that have not bloomed yet - will have to compare - or maybe the DL expert form Maine can id this one.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Nice, Bill. Wow - I'm hoping Shirazz will be much lower next year. How big was it when you got it? Your Stella looks like my Happy Returns - much brighter yellow than my Stella.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

victor you are probably right about the DL.
the shirazz was 52" tall (i measured). I'm not sure the $ will go down for this size tree if my nursery is any indication, everything this size was priced the same or higher - even BG and CQ. Of course if folks start grafting it and putting it up for sale on-line you may be in luck.
It also can take sun and the incredible pink lasts longer with more sun. Mine is turning varigatred green/white with some pink. I struggle with moving it for more sun - when i post pics on the jm site they all say it looks great, especially in front of the BG JM. I wanted to move the autumn moon in front of the BG for the contrast of colors. staying put for now though.
It also has a bunch of seed pods, although there is no info on how it is grown I do plan to see what comes up from these. I have a batch of little JM babies from CQ and Viridis. some have different leaves and some look to be true to the parent. Did this just to see what happened - took 2 years for the seeds to grow - even with the whole wet napkin/refrigerator/clipping the wings off process. I'll fill up the back yard down by the pond with these - if they make it great - if not nothing lost.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Yes, it's fun to experiment with seedlings. I just wait for them to pop up in the ground and keep them if they look different / interesting. I also play around more aggressively with pruning them since they're freebies.

Dont the wings have to go threw the Cold Stratification process. This topic came up in March 2007 when I started to come here.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Hey Victor, don't forget to post a wide view of your garden(s).

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

chichen - yes they do - that's what i meant by refrigerator. either my fridge was not cold enough or did not keep them moist enough - i finally stuck them in a peat plant holder and put them in the ground and waited.
