Best/Worse &What did I learnt today/Chat with Friends #48

Newcastle, ON(Zone 5a)

Hi Betty....thanks for the nice comments.
It sure would be nice to have some of that cake..one of my favorites. My first MIL used to bake that Pineapple upside down cake in a cast iron skillet..brought back memories..she was a wonderful loving woman. I cut all the grass in the back today..lovely day..but now thundering and rumbling..but no rain yet.
Isn't it wonderful that your gardens are aweing everyone. There is no better satisfaction than having people enjoy all the efforts.

Bev..I have the hosta called Pineapple upside down cake. I have been squishing the slugs on my hostas this afternoon..and on my daylilys. What is that photo of?

Hi Cat..I agree with you about the grandkids. They behave when they are here with me..but when their parents arrive..they start acting up... sometimes. LOL

Hi Ruby...so did you get to relax this afternoon?

Liz..yes they got lots of pics..and Scott kept saying how huge Hoover dam is, and interesting things about what he learned. How did you enjoy the dog show? Hope it wasn't too hot.

This is Hosta Pineapple Upside down cake..taken last year. I was just out there looking at it..and it has come along nicely this year. I should take some pics of each one to compare to last year.

carol, by the time the roofers came and then sil came we decided to late so now were going to try to go over next sunday if i can figure out the link i will post it so went to home depot and got soil and a few flowers and cactus.

betty, lol you have yourself burried in projects again mmmm pineapple cake sounds sooo good!

ruby, did you get some more pictures of her? she's soo cute!!

bev, are those pretty flowers from a hosta?

Nilwood, IL(Zone 5b)

No those are coral bells with the green leaves. Called red huchera however yopu spell it.

Bev, what kind of flower did you post, so pretty..
Carol, because I was a good girl and brought Bernice eggs early this a.m. she thought I should share in the cake..it is yummy..
Same here, thundering (no lightning) and getting darker so would imagine it will rain shortly..one thing about it, haven't had much watering the grass to do, infact after planted that wheelbarrel full of plants yesterday, the rain was just what they needed...
Darlene had brought me 2 pairs of her dads' pants to have taken in and shortened..did all my bandana's last weekend and fixed Jeff's gold pants and just left the sewing machine on dining room table, so I've finished one pair and now I'm on to the next, then the machine can go back in the closet..I don't set it up downstairs because with all the paint and woodworking, I'd be asking for trouble...

By the time I go to bed I'm hoping that my first 8 santa faces can come out of the mold..probably ruin a few till I get the heck of things..if they do come out, I could take them to work tomorrow and paint them..they should cure about 10 hrs. so by 11 I'll try my hand at it..

What did you get up to today Ruby? Did Miss Emily visit..

Waving Dawn and others...
Off I go, if hydro goes out because of the storm I want the pants done..lol

Victoria Harbour, ON

Think somewhere outside I have a Cora Bell but it's early season yet, maybe I'll be surprised in a few weeks..so dainty looking..

Look at the pretty yellow flower, is it a species of sunflowers?

Gardens sure are looking pretty..before we know it, nope, won't say it...lol

Nilwood, IL(Zone 5b)

Betty that is a shaggy Brown Eyed Susan.

Victoria Harbour, ON

Shaggy brown eyed Susan..is that why there are so many petals in it? I bought 2 plants a few weeks ago, they are brown eyed Susans but I think in the vine variety.. out back along the fence, late fall, more our Thanksgiving the entire area is filled with yellow daisy like flowers..tubular I think because they really multiply..so where they are it's ok..where do you have these planted?

Nilwood, IL(Zone 5b)

I had a big row of them in my sunny strip garden last year. None of mine are blooming yet if they reseeded but this one is in my nieghbor's yard.

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

Liz sorry I missed the big day yesterday. HAPPY BIRTHDAY FORMER SECRET PAL.

Yes, that is what I hear. After church today, we found a snake up over our front door after the baby birds nested up there. OOoooo. We hosed him out and he moved fast out of the down spout into my rose bush, then we chased him out and he went fast into one of my coyote bushes where we hosed him straight into a gopher hole, I am sure, where he belongs eating my gophers. He was a 4 ft. gopher snake. Not what you ever want to see slithering over your front door.

Victoria Harbour, ON

You have such different types of flowers..

Will be leaving for the city at about 6:00 tomorrow, Suzanne has to do a mtg. in Barrie so I'll walk around Walmart for 1/2 hr. - breaks the journey..

Best of today..all around pleasant day with lots of company and family, things to do, although I started late this aft. got the chair back put together AND 8 santa faces ready to paint..

Worse..you know, I can't think of anything that could be classified 'worse'

What did I learn..while visiting with Michelle who brought over a large antique trunk with rounded lid, Bernice asked me if I knew why it was round..because I didn't she went on the explain that when families came to the America's and Canada, they brought their wordly goods, if the trunk had a flat top it would be piled one on top of each other and damage was often done..those who could afford the rounded top, these were place on top as no other trunks could be put ontop because of the rounded top and less damage was done to their belonging..usually the rich people has them..

So that was my day..
Good Lord willing, I'll be gabbing with you all tomorrow..

OMG Dawn, I've got goose bumps..wow, I'd be freaking out..I see a gardener snake and don't go out for hours..don't know why not, I scream enough that they should never come back for fear I'd be near! Watched the newscast Dawn and LIz, says you are getting some pretty extreme heat...keep cool..do you both have air?

Well it's off to put sewing machine away, have some berries which I forgot I had and must eat..

Here's photo of the chair, back is rounded guess it's the angle I took the photo that it shows up square..the photo is what I'm painting on the chair back...have a footstool/table to put next to it on the front yard..should look pretty..

You would think I would learn how to post photo after so many..forgot again..

I love that B. We have those swamp coolers so yes as long as we are in doors we are fine. Air works on all vehicles now that Greg fixed the Honda air fan Friday.

Greg wanted me to tell him if he should decapitate the snake and I said if you're sure it is not a rattler, don't kill it, just make it leave the yard, but as it got about 25 feet from the porch, it found that gopher hole. My poor baby birdies. I wondered why I did not hear them this morning. I have been standing on a stool trying to see them, if I saw that snake, I would have fallen off the stool and broke something for sure and the snake may have came down and crawled over my broken body, it was so fast. (My dreams tonight).

Pacifica, CA

ha ha dawn is way lucky! no we have no air thats why i sit in the pool lol

Morning everyone, up bright and early, rain has stopped, gardens are enjoying the days of sun and nights of rain..actually I am as well..can't believe how much the grass has grown, if it keep growing at this rate of speed my 'earthly angel' will have to cut it twice a week..lol

So better get myself ready for the city ride, was going to go out and take photo of garden but opened the door and man does it smell 'skunk' so think I'll give him another 1/2 hr. or so to find himself another location..

Good morning everyone, out to the garden this morning, I got a 'Honeycomb' butterfly that just ain't happy where it is....Wilts even when its got enough water.....not sure if its drainage or what, but going to dig it up and see this morning, take a gander at the roots and like that old Marvin Gaye song, 'See What's Going On'........:)

Wrote a little story late last night when I got back from going to Atlanta from a cousin's funeral, here it is if you get time to look at it, if you do, hope you enjoy it.......Telling old stories about kin folks after a funeral kinda sparked me to write it in the first place....That's what we do like most folks, gather at somebody's house after the funeral, eat and tell stories about the departed loved one or other family members or friends......anyways here it is....

Going to scream here..lost my post...let's see if I can start all over again..lol

It's a sunny day here in the city, was pleased with the weekend..lots of family time, friendship time and even got a thing or two done..

What a glorious way to start a Monday, just arrived and my first call was Paul (BIL/boss) asking me if I had anything planned for Monday, Monday, nope a regular day of work..so he went on the say that because Tuesday - July 1st is our Canada day and we must take it on that day that we'd be off 1/2 day Fri.Sat and Sun. work Monday and off Tuesday..BUT, key word BUT if I agree to transfer the telephones over to my house on Friday morning he'd give everyone providing they make themselves available should a call come in, that all can work from home..took me about 1/2 sec. to agree so now I'm on a roll..

Brought my Victorian Santa faces here to work, they are still a bit damp, maybe by this aft. I can paint them..even got to pour 8 more this morning...

Bev, going back to my Canada and USA map that I have everybody pinpointed on it and see if you are enroute to my travelling to Chicago, sure wish I could drop in for tea and see your gardens..off on a mission to see where you are...gee whizz should have booked some extra days..lol

Crozet, VA

Thanks for relaying the message Bev. I bet she is having a great time. The picture of the red blooms is great. What is it that we are looking at?

Betty, you have the kind of boss that more people would like to have. What a great way to treat the holiday. Five days off straight in a row is wonderful.

I don't have anything much on my agenda today. I am going to go through two purses that I have carried in the past few months and see if the rings that I lost are in either of them. Wish me luck. I am sick over the possibility of losing the double diamond ring that belonged to my mom.

It is supposed to be getting hot again here tomorrow and the rest of the week. I need to enjoy this last day of good temperatures today. Thank God for air conditioning. I wouldn't be worth a nickel without it.

I hope that everyone is staying cool in their neck of the woods.

Ruby

Victoria Harbour, ON

Ruby, going to say a prayer for you with St.Anthony he's patron of the lost..people and objects...lol..here's hoping..ok just did it, sure you'll find it shortly...wouldn't it just break your heart not for you to find it..am sure you've just misplaced it and one day when you are not so focused on finding it there it will be...in the meantime am sure St.Anthony direct you to it's hiding place..

The clouds today are so fluffy, you can almost feel as though if you were up on them you could jump from cloud to cloud..hope you are getting much the same weather..

Yes Paul is a great boss, would be pushing it I'm sure if we asked for Friday morning off as well, traffic is terrible on a long weekend, many accidents on a daily basis let alone when everyone is rushing to the cottage..so, maybe we'll joke about it and it might make sense to him.. aren't we terrible, he give an inch or two and we want a mile..

Hello, Hello, Hello

Congratulations on your new granddaughter Laura! I can't wait to see a picture and what a beautiful name!!!

Happy birthday Liz - a few days late.

Sorry was out of town on what was suppose to be a weekend away with DH. We decided to take the kids and while they were good, it would have been nice without them (Gosh I sound like a horrible mother!). Anyway, we left early Friday mornign and headed up to Luray, Va. We went canoeing - 8 miles - down the Shenandoah River. It was an ok time. I had DD in with me and she wasn't in the mood to row, so I did most of it! Checked in to the house around 3pm and what a beautiful house it was! It was built in 1810 and has the original floorboards and was just so charming. Of course all the kids could think of were ghosts! (crossed my mind too!). The house was 4000sq and on 4 acres right on the Shenandoah River. They had a wonderful Florida room they had added on that had 8 sliding glass doors that we opened and could hear the river and the birds - so relaxing! We went in the river a few times and tubed down the rapids. That was fun until I banged my shin on a rock and cut it pretty bad. Had I been at home, I would have gone to get stitches! I was more concerned with the gunk the cut came into contact with on the rock so I cleaned it really good and have been keeping neo-sporum on it. I'm not positive, but I think I might have sprained my left wrist at some time over the weekend. I do not remember falling on it or anything but it started hurting Sat night. The only thing I can think of is from rowing the canoe, maybe I strained it. It hurts on the outside and to twist it. I'm just getting old.......

I'm off again tomorrow - up to Long Island, NY (Melville) for work. I'll try to check back in tonight to see what's up!

Y'all take care!
J

Good Morning!

My countdown puts us at exactly 3 weeks!!

Yow, and of all times I have been in a complete LAZE mode. LOL, I am going to be going nuts in the next weeks. But in a really good way, too excited about many things. First...Yahoo, will have a full set of teeth this Thursday!! I can't stress enough the watering of my tastes buds to eat and chew many types of food. First thing I want to do is eat an Apple, Oh wow, just the anticipation alone juicy and crunchy. Yum! Friday, Dh, has Steak ready to be grilled just to my satisfaction, and I think Corn on the cob is going to be better then i have ever had. Silly, but I am going to a wedding on Saturday. Now, I have a mighty pretty dress to wear, very simple, mind you, but I am going to be adorable in my flowered sundress with a smile to melt my honee's heart. Been along time, too long...so excuse my moment of being a bit vain. But I am dancing up a storm and smiling for the last time toothless.
LOL, then only anticipation for the Arrival of Liz and Betty, possible meeting Sharon and Ves...Makes me just Giddy.

As far as my gardens, well lets just say, they are looking rather chomped. So I have truely enjoyed see yours. Baby Rose seems to be doing well in the new location so I am happy for that. My daisies started blooming on Saturday.
And in my crafting Corner, making progress, changing mind on final outcome, But, I think it is looking beautiful.

Bev, you have some of the most beautiful flowers. It is always a pleasure to see.

Laura, Congratulations on your grand daughter. A very lovely name. I will look forward to seeing pictures of Isabella Rose! Hope you have been feeling better too.

Dawn, Oh my goodness! That snake would have given me heart failure!

Ruby, Hope you enjoy the comfortable weather today...I hear it's about the same here as well. Tomorrow is going to heat up the town again.

Betty, I am always amazed at what you will painting, that Chair is going to be stunning! How fun you will have such a nice long weekend...hopefully no calls will come in on your Friday of working at home.

Ok...I better get something for lunch.
Have a good afternoon.

Nilwood, IL(Zone 5b)

Betty I need some help finding my wedding band @8yrs and $2000.00 worth lost last fall while raking leaves or in the house. Just had sat down to watch tv and felt for my ring and GONE!!!! Ruby that plant is Scotish Broom. The green twigs stay bright green all winter.

Sorry 28 years of married life. I hit the @ button DUH!!

Nilwood, IL(Zone 5b)

If I didn't have Scotty to look after. Not that I mind, I would meet you girls up there but Chicago is 400 mile and I don't drive in big Cities!! Chicken I am.

Thumbnail by dragonfly62
Victoria Harbour, ON

Bev you could always drive as close as your comfortable driving and we could I could pick you up..wouldn't that be something, I too would be jumping up and down..as though I don't already do that..lol

Judy you must take pictures of you and DH all dressed for the wedding..it's storming like h..l here right now..Suzanne's appt. at 2:30 called to cancel..DO YOU THINK we should call Paul and tell him witht he storm coming in even more and HAIL shouldn't we all go home? I'd better get one of the other girls to do it, I've already gabbed about having Monday off in addition to Tuesay..Praying for power failure here at the office and will add in that prayer a little P.S. for you as well Bev..St. Anthony sure will be busy...Judy I work for 4 hrs. on Friday, it's Monday we have extra, I've homework on the chair so as I have to be nearby the telephone all day, will schedule homework..

Bev you have such different plants, are they familiar plants in your region or do you go in search of the unusual? By the way, thanks for the updage on thwoods..glad she's enjoying her visit with grandchildren..thought perhaps we had scarred her off...

Jeannine, how's mom doing..behaving herself? Your trip sounds marvellous even though your plans turned out differently .. sounds as though DD didn't want to be there..lol.. sorry to hear about your wrist..probably using muscles you've not used in awhile..any photo's of the house? Did Murphy behave..any news on new puppy?

I'm afraid to get on MSN and ask DS Sharon about her new litter..she wanted me to travel to the city yesterday to see my niece in concert..but lordy, I do that 100 mile run each way every day, not something I want to do on day off so probably I'll hear about it..lol

Mom called me this morning to tell me that Jim (Stepfather -78 yrs. old) returned to work today, Sharon blew her stack..but I was at mom and Jim's on Father's Day and he was going crazy at home even though he's been busy doing deck, washroom etc. but he's not happy unless he's at work..so this morning he was meeting with his old boss to come to some kind of agreement, company even got special insurance to have him there, so between these 2 issues, think I'll go back to painting my santa faces and not get into any more hot water giving her my opinion..smart girl aren't I..know when to pick your battles..

Victoria Harbour, ON

Judy and everyone, I say Judy because I know she has miniatures..Dave just started a new garden site for miniatures...come see..

I would dearly love to do that Betty but Scotty is disabled and there is no one else to take care of him so I am stuck but that is alright. You girls have a wonderful time and always take lots of pics. These are just plants that I have collected in this area. At one time I had 350 Preinnials. I haven't counted lately. That hosta is Fire & Ice my favorite. I have two and want more. Hi ALL!!!!! HUGS BEV These are pots that are on each side of my front steps.

Thumbnail by dragonfly62
Victoria Harbour, ON

Nice pot of plantings, sky looks wicket..lordy I'm not well, been in the washroom the past 1/2 hour..so much pain and so nauseated...sitting here now, Suzanne gave a a bon amine..45 minutes to go, better find myself a baggie just incase..wow..came on so quickly...going to clean up my painting here, head back and hope home comes soon..not to worry, must have something that doesn't agree with me..wouldn't you know..

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

Judy it is always Christmas at your house Mrs. Clause.

It is finally a bit cooler today with a little breeze. Still hot but under 100 I think.

Newcastle, ON(Zone 5a)

Ohhhhhhh Betty..hope you feel better soon.

Bev..isn't Fire and Ice such a clean fresh looking hosta..I have small one..
So far the slugs haven't touched it. It used to be one of the worst for holes from slugs.
I tried something new..I put industrial sand arund several of my hostas..it is dark grey sand they use sandblasting I think..I got it at the farm store. TSC.
I also got some different slug bait..so not sure which one is doing the trick...but not so many slugs this year..I go out in the morning..and if I see any on the plants I just cut them in half with my scissors.

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

We never have slugs here only at the nursery where they water all the time.

Glenview, IL

Hi...Oh,oh Betty i sure hope you get over whatever is got you so sick. Poor baby.

Thanks for posting about the new mini forum, lol have already been lurking, some of the cutest tiny gardens. i have seen some of them in other forum, I think is a bit bigger but still fits in. Will post a picture there in a while.

Dawn, you are so cute.

Bev and Carol, While I don't really go out of my way to pick slugs and bugs try broken egg shells at base. the bugs won't crawl over them because they are too sharp. Now not, sure if it works because I have never actually tried the method, but I guess the concept is good. If you decide to try it let me know if it works for you. good luck, I think dish soap water is suppose to help too...but again I only heard that somewhere.

Yes, Bev your Fire and ice is real pretty!

Nilwood, IL(Zone 5b)

Seed, I have tried everything from soup to nuts and these slugs of mine are bionic. I am afraid of the dark or I would go pick them at night, but don't tell anybody LOL. Betty you slow down girl!!!!

Hi all,
Just back home from going to my grandaughter's graduation from grade 8.
It is almost like the high school graduation. They sure do it up in a big way.
She looked so beautiful..

Judy..so happy to hear you will be smiling and enjoying all the fancy food on Thursday.
I tried eggs shells..and beer..no luck..last couple of years I would spray them with ammonia water...1 part ammonia to 10 parts water.
