Best/Worse &What did I learnt today/Chat with Friends #48

Victoria Harbour, ON

I go to lunch and you all come out to play (boo hoo) just kidding,

wow, Carol can't you just see it with brown eyed susan vines..not sure but I think the Barrie nursery had same but much more expensive than $20.00...was laughing with Suzanne, she was telling me because her son-in-law works at a major food chain and they just started an employee incentive that they get 10% off that she saved $8.58 on her groceries..said it was just as good in her pocket as in theirs, my first thought was, OMG it would buy me another plant....want to guess who is addicted to gardening? weather here is much like yours however, we're getting mini-drops, not amounting to anything just enough to keep us from playing outside when we get home..wanted to cut my grass tonight, wonder if last week's little elf came and did it this week..don't imagine so, nor do I expect her to but it sure made a difference with extra hours to play on the weekend..
Didn't know they were cornflowers Carol, that's how much I know..I truly think I should go find that gardening journal, make a map of my gardens, try to label or at least journal entry what I have..of course will have to call Aunt Muriel, she's about as brilliant with plant information as is Gita..will also have to make note of what must be moved..last night I looked at the front garden, here I've giant daisies and they've circled a little peony bush, no wonder they can't grow, noticed a few other shrubs that need space which have to be moved..so better start paying attention..do you all do the journal thing? might be a great thing to do on a rainy day...that is until the rainy day comes..lol

Love the frame on your deck Carol, are you trying to grow a 'live frame'? see moss on it?

Better press 'send' and continue before I it goes into cyberspace..

TabacVille, NC(Zone 7a)

Afternoon everyone.
Laura and Dawn I will be praying for you that God fulfill your needs.

Betty, so sorry to read of your sister. Hope her burns are superficial. Will be praying for her as well.

That will be a lovely showcase for your brown eyed susan, Carol. I have mine growing in tubs with trellises leaning against them. We all need more hardscapes and at 20 bucks, yours is a steal.

Gita, our garden help placed some rusty nails in the hole first, and my Endless Summer blooms endlessly so far! The shade is more of a lilac.

Good luck on your baby cake, Judy.

Bev, are those Asiatics or DLs? The eye on the second one is certainly radiant!
Ruby I kept telling myself, no more plants and no more swaps. But I am too weak to say no!

Now the swappers are thinking of a "Fairy Swap" or anything relating to the mystical realm, like gnomes.....how can I resist...always want a fairy garden.
I must learn to save!

Wow..I haven't went 'poof' yet! To all that I have missed, hugs and have a super good day!

Blessings Galore!
Jaye

Victoria Harbour, ON

Oh Gita, look at that hydrangea just ladden with flowers...I've 2 bushes, only about 2 years old, they are quite leafy but don't think I'll get flowers for some time..my girlfriend 'fast freezes' the flowers and uses them in dry arrangements..

Very interesting about the DM..will have to take a photo at close range so we can identify the plant that I thought was Dusty Miller...

Judy..can't see how we're going to fit everything in, Vicki is still on our list of 'meeting up with' crafts, sightseeing, gardening, stepping stones, what else? sleeping..no that's out of the question, no time for that..lol
The girls in painting class - 2 are doing floormats, one I absolutely love, it's has canada geese - one on water and 2 in flight..the others are still doing Muskoka Chairs..doing homework on my new one is a must for this weekend or I'll be in trouble come class time...a few of the girls will do the same once I finish mine..got home at 7:05 because of the accident and they were all touring my gardens so it was a quick change and back to work for 3 more hours..

Ruby think it must be everyone here on the thread enticing us with their beautiful roses..I've not had any either and this year well, the photo on the top of this thread is my very first roses..I'm just so excited..know I'll have to be purchasing more shrubs...I did plant a climber 2 years ago but hasn't done a thing, same size, no climbing..MIL had so much luck with hers and I admired them so..have the 3 arbors and how I'd love roses climbing them so I'll just keep trying, one day I'll be successful..when you are at the nursery isn't it amazing all the different coleus..spectacular..bought one the other day that was called 'firecracker' planted them all outside..she said you can have them in direct sun but they seem to be wilting so will have to find them a new home...I keep thinking of John digging and planting and going along with purchasing all your new plants, he must be a gardener at heart..you'll have to take a photo for us of your Nikko Blue..think if mine did have flowers they'd be white...boring...

Bev, did I not hear on the news this morning that your state is suffering major flooding? how are you doing with your land?

Victoria Harbour, ON

Jaye, you know you love the swaps, know I do, just haven't been lucky with them, sure have with what I've received but those poor swap partners I've had, most arrived in a terrible state...Fairie Swap, imagine the fun you'll have...

Now what plant did you put the rusted nails in the hole? interesting concept..

Nilwood, IL(Zone 5b)

Thoser lillies are some kind of hybreds I don'r know. Betty thank you for asking but we are at least 60 miles from the rivers so all is well. Praying for all those that lost all. BEV

I need to go back to school and learn to spell or just not hurry so fast!!

Victoria Harbour, ON

Bev, so glad that you are not in any flood danger..so tragic for them to have everything taken from them..was it 'dams' that just let go yesterday or am I mixing things up...love your iris photo's..I have a lily farm just up the road from me and I close my eyes and speed up each and everytime I pass it..

Now tell me, at some point I thought most of you gardeners were either into hosta, roses, lillies, wildflowers etc. and now you are all into everything and anything..is that a correct assumption?

I keept saying I'll have a bed of roses and then I'll do a walkway with hosta's and before you know it, it's a mish mash? ideas please

Nilwood, IL(Zone 5b)

I love and have all kinds of flowers but my main love is hostas. You name it or want it let me know and I will see what I can do. I have 108 named hostas with extras and about 50 unknown and 300 baby ones. I am having a hosta sale the 27th and 28th of this month. Some of the babies have about 8 hostas in a pot for $2.00. I divided that big Ventricosa and have three potted for $3.00 and three Golden Tiaras for &3.00 each. Hope I sell them all.I still have many babies in beds and pots to maybe keep. We will see!!! This is one of my two Guacamoles.

Thumbnail by dragonfly62
Victoria Harbour, ON

Can't imagine having that many..OMG what a deal..the hosta's I've looked at are normally between $7 - $10.00 some even a bit more..at the church plant sale, they were $5.00 so your prices are a 'bargoon'...I can only thank my luck starts that they can't cross the border or I'd be in trouble...

Victoria Harbour, ON

So nice to be home, rather tired tonight, big and uncomfortable..sure wish I had a clue as to what's going on...oh well, that will come, no sense getting excited...baggie jammies being called for..lol

My car was parked in Hillsdale - 1/2 hr. from my house, Suzanne dropped me off and we had something to eat at the fish/chip truck, so no cooking (not that I would anyway) then stopped into the bakery because I saw a sign that said, 'fresh strawberries - picked today!' well you have to have some don't you..and sitting there were butter tarts (I resisted) and strawberry tarts..half resisted only bought 1..oooooohhh won't I enjoy it with a coffee after my bath..

Then across the street, a friend of my brothers has a bicycle shop, they were just closing so we talked about what kind of bike I'd like, what would best suit my needs for the trails and he'll go through them and let me know when I'm to pick one up...

Then to Home Depot for some patio stones..did want to see if I could pick up Mock Orange shrubs but they had just watered the entire area and there was at least 2" of water all over the floor, had my new sandles on, couldn't go and ruin them, was a toss up though, I really did want the shrubs..

So I'm driving along happy as can be, go to the Post Office and there is a card..something is waiting for me..how exciting is that.. so tomorrow afternoon here I come..have to work it time wise because Sailor goes to get her nails done so it's home from the city, pick the pooch up, off to the vets then post office..maybe post office first..lol

I turn in my driveway and all my grass is cut, some earthly angel was here again, spent the afternoon and cut it all..imagine..I go to the variety store, they've cards for Tuesday night bingo so I bought her some..just as I come out there she is walking a dog..we do the garden thing and the dog breaks her hold and chases my Riley and Missy..lordy - almost got them..so now they are in a tree, waiting till their heart beats more slowly..

I'm blessed by the people in my life, I truly am..now I've 3 extra hours to play this weekend...

Best of today..everyones generosity
Worse of the day..not feeling 100%
What did I learn..that skin can stretch and stretch and stretch without cracking..lol

Sure wish you were here to enjoy a snack with me...

The old famous Bob's Big Boy strawberry pie sounds so good right now, speaking of berries.

It was like 105 or more today and tomorrow is supposed to be hotter. Sunday is supposed to cool a bit, but I will believe it when I see it.

Starz my JC rose looks good like that too in my lasagna garden and my Canna's that Liz sent me are almost going to bloom soon and the chicken wire under to keep gophers out is making all the tall plants lean a bit so I need to do something before the Canna's do it too. They are spreading too. My spreading Petunias are going nuts but still the front is not going so well. Thank God that will be my focus next year and the following year or I'd get stressed out.

Piedmont, AL(Zone 7b)

You know what Betty, I went back and just read a few of your posts about what you do each day, and I have one question for you......How many are there of you?......:)

Paul from Alabama

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

We all think that Paul, she has a cloning device for sure.

Nilwood, IL(Zone 5b)

She has more energy than anyone I know of. I just went and mowed 4 lots at the camper and planted a few flowers here at home and just got done weeding my nieghbor's rose garden and I have had it. I think I will take an Ice cold shower and have a bowl of Icecream and get under the fan and go to sleep but it all starts again tomorrow. Oh! Well! such is life. See you all tomorrow. Have a good night. HUGS BEV

heavenscape---

I have heard of the rusty nails thing-----They provide Iron--Dah! NOT acid????

The blue in Hydrangeas comes from more acid in the soil. You have to add it--by some of those acid-type fertilizers. However--Aluminum Sulphate gives them the boost they need for having blue flowers. It may not happen in a year--but if you keep at it--they WILL all be blue!

AS ALWAYS.............patience is a virtue--when it comes to gardening....

I have been giving my bush some of the same. Will see next year!

Gita

It is neat to see that some of the blooms are blue--and some are pink---right next to each other. I guess it has to do with where the roots get their nutrients from. Soils DO vary!

Good morning everyone, rain is on it's way this morning AND for the next 3 I'm sure..but that's ok it's a 'sunshine' day in my little world..

Good night sleep but Suzanne just called she slept in so I'll meet her in Hillsdale, I'll drive slowly, look at everyone's flowers along the way and get a morning boots of God's glory!

Even Missy came out to say 'good morning' to you all..

I'm in a bit of a quandry, joined the flat envelope 'swap' went in search of big envelopes and can't find one big enough, so back searching this aft. must get them posted in the quickest delivery fashion there is..

I'm on the run, will go back and re-read all you posts so I can comment once I'm in the city .. woopee only 4 hrs to work..7 of driving lol but 4 to work if one can call it work!

Enjoy your morning coffee

Awww....What a sweet kitty Betty. Wow, I just read through everyone's posts and cannot remember a thing that most wrote. Oh well. I guess I am a bit interested in hearing some other possible ways to brighten the blue on the Hydrangea. Mine are a very, very pale almost white color at the moment. I want the wonderful vibrant blue. Waaaa....

It is Friday, we are heading in to the weekend. I hope that everyone has some fun things planned. This is our first weekend in almost two months that we don't have anything on our calender. I am so happy about that.

Oh yeah, Betty and Jave, I am in trouble every time I walk in to a place selling plants. ha-ha I don't suppose there will be any more plant swaps planned nearby until maybe in the fall. There are so many gardening chores that we keep saying will be done in the fall. We are going to be really busy if we accomplish every thing that is on our lists.

Bev, I will look forward to hearing how you Hosta Sale goes. Where will you be selling them? At home? A Farmer's Market? I ask because John is planning to pot some of ours up and try to sell next Spring at our local Farmer's Market. I am with Betty on you having good prices. Sounds like a deal. I wish you good luck in selling them.

Anyway, good to hear from each of you. Have a great day everyone.

Ruby

Nilwood, IL(Zone 5b)

Hi all! Yes Ruby , I am selling the hosta at home. This big town of 350 is having a town wide yard sale so thought I would join in and maybe get some sold crossing fingers!!! Last year I got 45 Elegan's babies for postage. I saved 7 for me and gave the rest to some of our town folks. Mine turned out so cute. I have to write the ladie and show her this pic. You know any hosta that you grow from seed, you can name it what you want because it is a hosta that is unknown. Hugs to all this wonderful morning. BEV

Well here I am only 3 hrs. left so I'll play for awhile, might take some painting out..lol..we got in 1/2 hr. late..first coming to work on 400S there was a multi car collision so that delayed us and then just on the off ramp here in the city a truck was on fire..do you think someone was giving us a hint to stay home?

It's sunny one moment and cloudy the next .. I've enough to keep me busy 24/7 this weekend (thank God no grass to cut)!

Bev, a community Sale, how wonderful for you..let's hope all goes..do you also sell garage sale items? Sure wish I was closer, right up my alley AND I NEED plants...shaking my head NO!

Ruby nothing planned, now what will John and you do to pass the weekend, will you sit out and read feet up enjoying the day or have you slated projects?

Gita, mine were not originally a color I don't think, if I did same would it give them color? Doubt it...now those flowers are from the same plant? how interesting is that..now the days are getting closer, are you getting excited..what kind of weather do they have at this time of year? You will probably say you are not excited but know deep down you've many memories and with translating the book it will be nice to be closer to the family history..perhaps cousins have more details for you..let's hope..

OMG Dawn 105..is that a humid 105..can't imagine it..no wonder your poor plants are 'drooping' Dawn did your lily come as a big tube? I bought almost 2 doz. some between 6" to 1 foot, red tone to them, now I'm not sure if they were Calla Lilies or Canna Lilies? something has been digging them up don't know how as they are huge so tonight I'll have to dig a deeper hole..

Paul, I'm highly energetic..I make a 'to do' list each and every week that should take 2 or 3 to do and I stay focused and so accomplish most of it..can't take just sitting, I'll be sitting enough as the years come....and thank goodness there is only '1' of me, world couldn't take '2'...lol

Will send this part of the post before it's lost in cyberspace..
be right back

Victoria Harbour, ON

Am back, just had a call from Beth (lawyers office) and she said what a joy it was to call me, I'm always so chipper/good humor (says it makes her sick) lol..told her my grandmother told me when I first started to work that when an employer hires you he doesn't hire your problems so no matter what is going on when you open the door at work your problems stay outside, good humour brough inside..never forgot it and always try to live by that...nuts right?

Bev love the color of the hollyhocks ,mine are full of buds ready to open, this must be my year..both roses and hollyhocks that never grew are doing well...I picked a zillion hollyhock seeds last year while travelling in a bakers' field and do you think I can find them 'not' am sure I will once the gardening season is done..

Crozet, VA

Betty, the lost seeds sounds a lot like me. I just finished posting in another thread (can't remember which one) about losing the setting in a dark Topaz ring a couple of years ago but held on to the ring because I thought that maybe someday I would get them reset or something. Yesterday my cleaning lady found the lost stone. Amazing!!!!! Only problem is now I cannot find the ring. ha-ha I remember having it a couple of months ago and I am hoping that it is with another much more valuable ring that I was going to take and have repaired. I searched through the jewelry box and a small box file that sits in kitchen and is a catch all. No luck. Only thing I can think of to do is to go through all the purses that I have carried over the past few months and see if I put them in there. Please say a prayer that I find them. The more valuable diamond belonged to my mom and I would like to have it back.

Bev - the community wide yard sale sounds like fun. I hope that you do well. Hey, love the tip about naming a hosta. Might have to grow some by seed just so that I can name them. Cool as can be.

You all have a great day.

Ruby

TabacVille, NC(Zone 7a)

Hello everyone..
Blessed be! It's raining here!! It'll take at least another rainy day for the ground to get saturated!

Lol Gita! Just a new gardener here...good excuse for me to get another hydrangea right? Do love the lilac color tho..but blue would be nice too.

It will be a miracle to have rose beds here. Jap. beetles raided my beautiful hybrids and thank you kind ladies for posting your lovely roses here. I'll lurk around in the roses' forum and drool, unseen. And here comes Paul with his heritage roses....lucky you!

Dawn, I lost my JC to JB....waaaaaaaah! Now, I'll say thanks to the 90's we've been getting. 105!! Imagine the airconditioning repair men will be on high demand.

Bev, wish I'm living closeby. Would be the first one in line for your hostas. There'll be not an inch left of shaded space under my 2 oak trees. Great prices you have there too. Just ordered some from a co-op here. Was it you that I promised to share some Red October? Will have to take a pic of it, with their red stems.

Ruby, not trying to entice you (look away Betty), today I got a pair of bluish purple Durantas trained as standards!! My first but if I could, I would have got more. Love the color.

My mother once got totally deranged trying to find her Burmese ruby ring..a marquis cut. She believed that one of her kids must have lost it. Grandma did some chants and pointed out where her ring might be. It was behind the old food pantry. You know the old time kind.... Dad had to move that monstrosity and lo and behold it was back there!
Actually, it was me that had played with it, and accidentally rolled back there. How grandma knew, it boggled my mind till now. Grandma didn't live with us then. Mum went to her grave not knowing!
Hope you find yours Ruby.

Betty mish mash is what brought you smiles! And the "I'm so glad I did this!" follows. Each time I planned a bed of specific plants, I always ended up with totally another breed! Guess it all depends on what looks good at the nurseries at that time. But if I have space left in that bed, my guilt will make me tuck in a few of the original wants! Believe me, all the beds I have are Mish - Mash.
Asiatics mish with dahlias....Hostas mash with lenten roses... lol! Irises mish with cannas!!
Another alien to my garden -- hollyhocks. Been wanting some, and kept forgetting! Duuh!!
Perhaps Betty, you can stake the area where the hollyhocks bloom, then perhaps you'll find the seeds later. Or I can send you some American hollyhock seeds. Still got that prize to mail out to you ;)
Sweet Betty, angels looking out for you dear one. Wish a kind angel will mow the grass too for us. Your grandma's a wise one. A sunshine personality goes far in any career than a complainer or one who brings all the problems from home to work! Once you clock in, your soul belongs to the company store!
But that doesn't mean you can't cuss out silently at your boss behind a huge smile!

Laura, I hope you feel better.

Everyone.....that means all of you lovely ladies, and gent.....have a super weekend!
Blessings Galore!

Do have a wonderful evening..
I'm off for a dish of strawberries...

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

Heaven what is a JC/JB? I am slow with acronyms sometimes.

No we are almost always dry, no humidity, so thank God for that, we have 3 evaporative coolers and it is cheap to run them as long as it is our usual dry weather.

Town wide yard sale sounds so much fun.

B my cannas came from the box Liz sent me, they are pupleish, but have not bloomed the orange flower yet, I also have two green ones that I don't know if they came from Liz or I bought them, they are not doing as well, they are not in as good of soil though as the others. Will take pictures.

TabacVille, NC(Zone 7a)

Dawn, Joseph's Coat...and Japanese Beetles.

Yup....Betty made out like a "bandit" quoting one of the swappers.
Hope there'll be more days where you can't find anything wrong, like today!

Thanks for well wishes on finding the ring Jaye. If I have time today, I will begin going through pocketbooks.

I am slow getting started this morning. Still in a groggy state. If it is not too hot at noon today, I might go and watch Tucker, my son play baseball. I am also thinking of possibly going back and visiting my granddaughter for a while today. After my grogginess lifts I will be able to make better decisions.

Here is wishing everyone a great day today.

Happy Birthday Liz......I have enough sense not to ask you how old you are......but not enough sense to remember the little table I put at the end of the bed last night before I dozed off, imagine my surprise when I ran into it this morning about 4 a.m. in the dark, sending it one way and me the other......Happy Birthday Liz however old you are and many others just like it.......and I'm never putting a little table at the foot of the bed ever again, unless I start sleeping with light on, a big powerful light.....:)

Happy Birthday Liz...will be crossing the border with a 'pressie' for you...

Just came in for a sec..lordy I was in town by 8am and back by 10, of course there were a few garage sales that I had to stop and look - stayed away from nurseries but somehow flowers just seem to come home with me..

One middle ages couple had a garage sale and the back of his garden was beautiful..only bought $5.00's worth of treasures but as I admire his garden, boxes cames out, I have many daffodile bulbs, 3 wild rose bushes (from his mother's plants) a large hosta for the pond..so I'm excited again, got home and there was a wheel barrel full of plants some for my live birdfeeder roof and the rest for planting..so now I just came in for quick break, something to drink and eat and off I go gardening..it's the most glorious day today that I'll be spending it all outside..Jeff came up last night, went dirtbiking in the aft. golfing with Greg last night and is taking the boat out today, wanted me to tag along, friends are joining him, I have much to do let alone hang out with the young ones, think he was relieved..lol...

So I do hope you enjoy your day,
I'll be back on my next break to reply to the posts..

There truly are some enablers in my neighborhood, Bernice and Cliff brought this wheelbarrel full and has another for me tomorrow..more work...love it..

Have my trusted 'live'birdfeeder' roof to plant..that's exciting in itself..

I know you learn something new every day but!!!! I have been getting ready for my hosta sale and divided a huge Ventricosa and put in pots for $3.00 a big start. I went to look at them and leaves burned and had to give them a hair cut. They are now $1.00 becuse I had put soil in them with fertilizer in it and they don't like that. I did learn a lesson, but just so I get rid of them. Wish you were all here to buy my babies cause I may have to have another sale in the fall. I am running out of room. Have a nice weekend all.
