June Blooms 2

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Wowser, Susan........such awesome blooms. I pinched back every bud on my large ones and now I am mad at myself as I think it is fun to see solid blooms, too.
Here is a baby Spin Art

Susan ... You've got SEED PODS! Maybe you can "catch" those seeds when the pods open and sow them for lots of new strep babies!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Lin, I am wanting to have only raised beds for cutting flowers and fill in the rest with the big rocks. Someone told me it would cost as much as grass but at least I wouldn't have to water the rocks (LOL)

The fun part about just growing leaves someone sends you is that I have no idea what the blooms will look like

(Zone 1)

Just like a lot of other plants, to reproduce they go to seed. I know Kimskreations and others have collected seeds from their Streps. The problem is getting them before the pods open and they scatter. I think I remember someone talking about tying a piece of pantyhose around the pod somehow, to catch the seeds but now that I remember it, that wasn't strep seeds which are very tiny. Hopefully someone will come along with some suggestions for you so you will be able to harvest those seeds.

You might try sticking a plastic cup or some kind of container under the pods so maybe when they open the seeds would drop into the container.

Danville, VA(Zone 7a)

A long time ago in a seed swap someone sent me a very fine net/bag with a tie on the top I just got it out and I am going to put it on the ends of the stem.... Shoot and I cut off at least 6 or more of these last week... Why could I have not had a brain celll grow last week and say gosh that looks like a seed pod..LOL
Thanks Lin.
Hugs,
Susan

Keep us posted on those seeds!

Andalusia, AL(Zone 8b)

OMG,I missed the party again!!!!! All I can say is WOW.... beautiful pictures ladies!!!!!!!!!!

Danville, VA(Zone 7a)

Ok I have 2 more for sure with these pods and maybe one or two more..LOL Shoot I have been keeping my plants neat and nice.. Here I have been cutting off the seed pods... I am going to try and read up about seeds. I guess I should let them die on the stem right? Also I have a couple net/bag things but they are thicker so should I not use these so that the light can still come in? I know stupid but... I thought you had to do like swapping pollen or something to get pods...LOL

Susan

oooo Gail..you have more new ones! You started all of them from leaves? Wow! I am loving looking at them all..my favorite has to be Rainbows End..Lin I absolutely love that 'Aloha Mauna Loa' episcia in your terrarium..I have given up on all but a couple of mine....all your plants in there look great..also gotta love your Aiko..aren't Yellow Chiritas the greatest!..Susan wonderful Group Shot! They all look so lovely..yeppers those be seed pods..oh no..now you really will have streps coming out of your ears!..lol...! Berry Splash is another beauty Sally!..Enjoy your movie Dimmer, hope you have a cooler week at work...Hi Ya Jannich..I am in awe of all the beautiful blooms too! Oh Kim if you are lurking.. my prayers are with you too for your surgery tomorrow..Hope you are back with us really soon feeling wonderful!.....

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

For some reason I am simply addicted to growing from leaf (streps). I get more satisfaction even though it takes several months to get a bloom..........then the plant takes another few months to get a decent size. Nancy, I can't wait for these plants to get big enough to start taking leaves from them to grow again (especially that Rainbow's End). I have never even heard of it.

Forgot to tell you when we were mowing and cleaning the yard today, the man helping me killed a 4 foot plus rattlesnake in my yard.

Susan, the pod will first be green and not twisted looking......then it will start to twist a bit........then it will start to turn brown.........gently gently twist a little bit and help it along before you finally take it off and put it in an empty envelope. Several days later the seeds will fall out in the envelope when you twist it........are you confused for good now?

Danville, VA(Zone 7a)

Yes I am confused but that is nothing as I was born this way... I have seeds pods on Silvia,Cherry Pie, Very Berry, and Tiger Lily so far as I can see... Cherry pies is brown how I missed cutting this off is beyond me..LOL Why when you read it says that the flowers are sterile? I try to keep my flowers clean as I don't want bugs and have been cutting these thing off..LOL I have a cover over the one now and I will do the others tomorrow as I am tired and my body hurts.. I hurried to get my books out and nothing about seed pods...LOLOL I was so upset... LOL Ok off to try to find out about seed pods.
Hugs,
Susan

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

as long as they are green, relax and go to bed..............if you have some brown real twisted looking ones, take them off and put each kind in an envelope............don't worry as you will get the hang of it..................

Northeast, NE(Zone 5a)

Very early spring seems to be my magic time for starting strep leaves..can't figure it out..lol..all the leaves I put down right after the 1st of the year rooted really fast..now the ones I put down since the 1st part may are slowly rotting..I am losing alot more than I would like...maybe I need to adjust my starting mix....Gail I do believe I would faint dead away if I ever saw a real rattlesnake,,lol,,
I took the camera around thismorning and snapped a few blooming right now....

Nancy your streps are looking gorgeous! Spiritual Corridor is one of my favorites that I don't have yet .... but I have a leaf down (thank you Gail!) and I hope to have my very own soon!

Gail that Spin Art is an eye catcher every time! Susan sent me a healthy baby of that one and I was thrilled!! Now it needs to grow! ^_^

Susan your group shot of streps made me think JUNGLE! It's a jungle of streps. LOL

Here is how I catch the strep seeds ... when I see the pod is beginning to turn brown I close an envelope around it and then the pod can finish drying on the stalk. It works well if you don't mind envelopes dotting your strep display! ^_^

The above picture of the envelope catching seeds on Iced Pink Flamingo was my first attempt at catching the seeds and then I planted some of them this winter.

Here is what I have to show for my efforts. They are still small and I only kept the three little bitty leaves that came up with variegation on them plus one other solid green one just to see if any variegated leaves will come in on it. They are still small but I like knowing the came from seeds I caught. ^_^

Brenda.........bummer I put a picture of Sweet Talk on Something Special in the plant files. Your Something Special looks fantastic........so do your baby seeds!
I have never seen Chorus Line, Nancy and she is such a pretty soft color.

Northeast, NE(Zone 5a)

Thanks Brenda and Gail..Brenda that is a really neat way you do your seed pods.. I need to try that.I usually keep a close eye on them until they are dark brown then snip them off and twist them ever so carefully..lol..over my envelope..I am sure I scatter far more seedas on the floor than I ever catch....I love the way your babies look...really nice! Here is a pic of my Sweet Talk..It slowly started blooming about a month ago..now it looks like a huge full bouquet ...I Love this plant!

Sweet Talk is one of my favorites, too. I sold my big one but the babies are growing. Think I am going to get out of the AV club..............want to do what I want 'when I want'. That is bratty enough don't you think!

There are so many streps I want but different vendors carry only one or two........if anyone has small baby strep plants, I sure wish you would put them on DG Marketplace so we can buy.

Danville, VA(Zone 7a)

That is a cool way to catch the seeds and I would never have thought of that... Thank you so much..... Nancy,Sally, your pictures are wonderful....Such colors on them... I love my jungle of streps ^_^
I think I root better in the fall and into winter and I wonder why? I have a few little plants but they are still to young to go to new home... but give them time to grow baby grow and I am sure they will...
Ok I am tired as I went to post office and then food shopping which I hate to do and spend to much money and always say boy that would be allot of plants I could by... Nancy told me about a yellow strep so now I am hunting for one of them...LOL I went to Dibley's site and then I think they don't send to US?
Ok putting my feet up now.
Hugs,
Susan

Danville, VA(Zone 7a)

Here is what I used to catch mine so far.. I have others that I have to do also... So do seeds come true to the parent? I am going to put an envelope on some more I have that I did not put a sock or what ever you want to call it..LOL

Susan

Susan that is quite the ingenious way to catch strep seeds..I never thought of that!! That yellow strep I was telling you about is Alissa..my sister got me another one after the 1st one croaked and I am waiting patiently or not so patiently for its 1st bloom to open..I will probably take 50 pics of it..LOL...then I will repot it and pray it grows fast..lol..so I can share leaves with people from her.
No Gail..I killed Yukago : ( I did everything exactly as you told me and I still killed it...waaaa!! Oh that baby bloom is so awesome! Wow I really Love the bloom on that Glory Be Sinningia too..thats a real looker!
