Are you using the tarp in place of the pond liner?
DG Names, real names II
Hi Candyce.
At the moment, I am using the tarp AS the pond liner (They actually work really great!).
Temporarily, that is. I've figured it better (and WAY more budget friendly, too) to use that to experiment with, rather than buy an actual pond liner and have it be too small. Read a lot of mistakes happen that way.
Plus, I am sort of making the pond a bit above ground level, so, I need to see where water levels are going to actually end up. I now know where I need to build up a little bit more to make the creek flow properly into the pond area. Will definately be needing to figure in a couple level drops in the creek to get that splash sound going.
I will leave the tarp in place, probably, and put down the padding and a real liner over it.
Only trouble with using a plastic tarp is puncture wounds. Doubling up the tarp and padding any rocks put into the pond is the answer. Some say use old, thrown away carpet to pad under the rocks, but I dunno 'bout that one. Kinda scares me to leave that stuff under water. I used nothing .... and of course, I have a small leak. I have to run the hose in it for about 5 minutes every other day or so. Water level drops maybe 1/8 - 1/4 inch or so over a day or two, so all in all, not too bad. Plus, I think I read somewhere that the fishies grow faster when you keep adding fresh water. Though, I am not sure they meant hose water.
Very interesting, Willie. I would never have thought of some of these issues. I, too, would be very leary of using old carpets underwater. Some brands of carpeting have some pretty bad chemicals in them that may affect the health of the water.
The recommendation to use old carpet is for under the liner, not in the water. It is used as an underlayment, if you don't have an actual one.
Well then that makes you all the more special! Take care.
Love them, and that's a great shot!

So you 'stole' it?
but, don't tell anyone!
If the DF doesn't mind, I certainly don't!
Then again, who could resist ..... I did have one drinking from the pond the other day, but my feeble camera is [insert fecal explicative here] for shots like that. :-)
Might be time to dust off the 35mm again.
Victor - thanks for clarifying that use of the carpet. When he mentioned leaving it under the water, I thought it was under the rocks in the water.......LOL Can you tell I've never built a pond??? But I'd like to sometime!
No problem! My kit came with a nice thick, underlayment.
See! This is exactly why I am practicing first. :-) The devil is in the details ....
if i was that close to a dragonfly, i'd probably pass out. Yikes!
edited to say: i had one of those little brown beetles in my hair earlier and that about did me in.

great shot Willie
I put in little gold fish from the pet store back in May and I have babies already!!
Nothing like the sound of running water - and I love all the water plants available out there. Can't talk you into a couple dozen baby fish, huh?
I'm a newbie to this forum. Sign me up for NE gardening. I have been thoroughly enjoying reading all the posts from as far back as April. WOW!!!
I too live in NJ but down south by the Del. Mem Bridge across from Wilmington, DE.
I'd love to have a water feature ( am drooling over pics ) It's so nice to learn from others.
My cousin lives in Lafayette and my aunt lived in Andover.
Are there ever RU in Jersey? Reading about them just makes me want to go, but with my mom's health situation I can't go too far. I'd love to go to the one in Williamsport, cuz my brother lives in Wellsboro, but at this time I have to decline.
Sure wish I knew how to work hubby's camera. That is on my to-do list.
Jan
Welcome Jan! I grew up in Chester, NJ
Harper
Welcome Jan. BEV
Thanks for the welcomes.
Harper, my folks at one point lived in Flanders many, many moons ago and my niece lives in Califon.
Jan
Oh yeah! I remember Flanders! Also, I lived in High Bridge, close to Califon. My mother is best friends with Califon's old Mayor, Marie Koch. She had a beautiful old victorian right in the center of town. Marie lives in CT now. We also knew the Zukoski's and the McConnell's.

Welcome, Jan! Another Jersey girl yay!!!!! With all the new Jesey people we may have to do our own RU.
Hi Jan. Glad to have you with us. I will add you to the list. Eleanor
Thanks Eleanor. Now I feel offcial . lol
My niece is married into the Hintz family. Too funny, my other brother lives in High Bridge.
Jen, that sounds great!
Anyone know about carex and whether or not you cut it back like grasses? ( or juncus for that matter) I had some juncus "show up" in my garden. I am really liking it, but it has been sooooo dry here, it is suffering. I think I need to move it to a wetter site. I definitely will be extending my subscription beyond my 2 month trial. yippee
Welcome, Jan. Jump right in!
Thanks, Nance. Had to go out and water after dinner, but had to dodge the "skeeters". However some of them found me. DH has been outside in the garage making a wall unit bookshelf thingy ALLL day long and isn't bothered. It is frustrating! Anyone else bothered by those "skeeters"? I didn't put anything on cuz I was just going out for 2 seconds. Famous last words of a gardener, "I was just going to be out there for 2 seconds". Anyway ....
Jan
Haha - like I'll just pull this one weed as I walk by...
