Beat me to it - definitely Tulip Poplar, aka Tulip Tree http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/1031/. They grow everywhere around here and get huge - looks like yours is well on its way to be one of the giants (can grow as tall as 190'!). I love the shape of the leaves on this tree - planted the variegated form several years ago http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/83704/, so pretty in the spring but sorry to say it doesn't hold its variegation long and is usually all green by July :(

Hi everyone, I'm Audrey. The Tulip Poplar is the state tree of Tennessee. It's NOT a tulip tree. Tulip trees have deep pink blooms and are not as big a tree, but the blooms are bigger. You have a dyed in the wool Tulip Poplar! A beautiful tall tree. Congratulations!
Audrey
Welcome Audrey and you will be added to our list!! My grandmother had a Tulip Poplar tree in her yard. It was a huge tree and made a great lightning rod. It got struck one night during a T-storm and ripped a strip of bark off the entire length of the tree. The tree seemed OK until the next year and then it died. Eleanor
Hi, Audrey! It's great to meet you. You are going to love this family of NEGers!!
Welcome Debbie & Audrey! Glad to have you and your knowledge aboard!!
I don't like the tulip trees in my yard.... they grow too fast and have bad roots.... one of them we cut down and it was rotten in the center... if that monster ever came down on our house... we would not have had a house left.... right after they cut it i gasped in fear.... and they make a huge mess
Please don't judge all Tulip Trees by this one! That would be like thinking all dogs have rabies.
Wow!
That's a pretty large tree. It could have done major damage!
ok you are probably right Doe.... in my opinion they got to go.... LOL
can't stand the mess they make and saplings start everywhere if i don't get them all picked up... they all have the same color flower as Clems... and it's always the last tree to hold out and let go of the leaves.... always a week or two after everything else... always double clean up in fall
add this height to the stump on the ground
Welcome Audrey, and thanks to all for identifying the Tulip Tree! iI still like my tree, especially when it blooms. It is too bad that is so tall that you cannot admire the flowers. Clemen
Thanks, they really are beautiful trees!
I think it's pretty!
Welcome Audrey!
Whereabouts is Dyersburg? i lived in Crossville for a while - i'd love to come back to Tennessee to stay, maybe around Knoxville...

Dyersburg is on the nw end on the state, not far from the Mississippi River. A pretty little town, not to little and not to big. I've been here about 4 years, and I like it. I moved here from middle Tn., about 10 miles fron the Tennessee River. Much prettier here!
come on back! You'll be welcome!
Audrey
Sounds lovely.

Hi Audrey, and welcome! I lived in TN a long time ago. First Madison, then Nashville and finally Hendersonville. That was from '75- '79. What i remember most was the afternoon thunderstorms when the sun would come out and things would steam up. Our latest venture took us to east TN where we visited some friends living in a place called Piney Flats.
Well, I've been to Nashville! I've been up in east Tennessee, too, long ago, it was beautiful, there, too! Tenn. is just a pretty state!
Audrey
I must agree, however, there is NOTHING like autumn in the north east and that's where I am now. Of course, we are looking to retire to the south east! Right now we are considering North or South Carolina, ,but I wouldn't mind looking in the mid-Atlantic states like Delaware or Maryland. Lots of baggage in TN.....
Audrey, one of my twin brothers lives in Bretwood, tn, near Nashville, are you near them?? clem
Oooh, ,Brentwood was a really nice area back when I lived in Nashville.
I'm about (?) 150 miles west of Nashville. I'm not far from the Mississippt River in the north-west end of the state. It doesn't get quite as cold here. Of course, I love the whole state! I'm a transplant from SE Missouri, and lived in Ala. for several years, my best friend lives down there, so of course I get to go visit! When I go, it's "old home week"! All her kids come to see me, AND, her grandkids! I think they like me better than my own kids do!
