What have you bought so far ?? Part 7

Essex Junction, VT(Zone 4a)

I'm working outside today (too nice not to!), and I've been seeing White Admirals a lot so far.

I tried to rescue one yesterday that I found stuck in my pondless pond (it was under a branch from the previous night's storm). Poor thing couldn't fly. I tried to undo the fold in its wing with my nail, and I let it rest on my finger, but it still couldn't fly. I eventually left it, and I have no idea what happened :(

ooh, and the cedar waxwings were all over my serviceberry this morning. It was a treat watching them get the berries. I'll probably write up a post in the wildlife gardening forum about all the activity. If I'm not distracted by work, that is ;-)

Robindog...I was at Belleks in East Haddam yesterday and they had a nice selection of delps. Took some photos and rated the nursery in Dave's "Go Gardening" section here:

http://davesgarden.com/products/go/view/1190/

Think I should given Belleks 5 stars as everyone else did. It is a very pleasant place to shop, the assortment is great and its a nice drive to get there. Understand Belleks makes a point of having items in bloom after many other nurseries have eased off carrying them for the season.

I decided to skip work and instead make that post. Here it is if anyone is interested:

I ordered lavender, artemisia, stokesia, heuchera, echinacea baptisia and a hardy hibiscus.

Thomaston, CT

Nice choices, Victor--is the hardy hibiscus a shrub? David--thanks for the post on Ballek's--have never been there--don't get to that part of the state often, but it looks too nice to pass up---reminds me of Hollandia in Bethel.

Evie - I want it !

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Yes, it's a shrub that dies back to the ground. I left out four clematis too! Planted all of them today.

Kershaw, SC(Zone 8b)

I have to stop visiting the darn lilyauction site. I found that the hostalibrary.org site also has a auction area...lol. DOH.

So far from the lilyauction site, specific for DL's:
Flight of the Raven, Bella Serra, Aerial Applique, Painted Bunting, Dark Music, Moments Rich in Blessing, Lyrical Ballad, Circle Upon Circle, Wesbournes Wild as a Buck, San Louis Regal, Spiny Sea Urchin, Wild Child and Mediterranean Muse. I don't have the bonus DL's written down, and it's dark out, so I wouldn't be able to list them...but almost everyone of those DL's came with a bonus DL...lol. The list pretty much doubled.

Hostas. Between the Fox fire Co op, and the hosta library auction, my hosta collection is approaching 100 known cultivars this year, the no id hosta added in, probably over 100.

Very nice. Happy birthday 5 days early.

I got my own back burner seared in the sun today!

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

Speaking of Father's Day gifts. Here's what Anna's DH is getting this year ....
a new chain saw
new carpets for the living room and dining room
and a new pair of extreme gardening gloves.

They both went into town yesterday to get these items, and it was all I could do to not think ... hmmmm .... chain saw, a rug in which to hide the bodies, and heavy duty gloves to not leave fingerprints! I had myself quite a laugh.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

LOL Oh my Candyce.....remind me NOT to come visit!!

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

When you visit, I'll make sure that Anna and DSIL are out for the day!

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Maybe i'll just bring my own chain saw? LOL

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Isn't there a movie about dueling chain saws?

belleville, NJ(Zone 6a)

When i lived in TN, where they take football seriously - REAL seriously, i remember hearing a radio commercial for an upcoming Vols game. When they said, "Come see the UT Volunteers," they played "Rocky Top" (the unofficial Tennessee national anthem), and they said, "Versus the University of Arkansas," (i think) they played the theme from Deliverance, "Dueling Banjos".
i 'bout drove off the road laughing...

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

that song gets sung every time I head up into sussex county in NJ.... my co-worker and i have a running joke... if you hear banjos get out of there!!!!!

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

ROCKY TOP ?!!!!!!!!
I loved that song.
When I was a younger mom I had a troup of Explorer Scouts. We would go to the park for free concerts and dance to that tune until we fell over sick.
Those were the really good old days.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

sounds like it was fun GE

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

They were great boys and girls, we were the first co-ed "Boy" Scout troup in Penfield NY.
Explorers are 17 - 18.
I was a single mom with all girls ,my older daughters wanted to do the winter camping and field wild plant identification projects the boys did.
It was that time when women were challanging the establishment.I was the troup adviser, they didn't really need a leader ,they reported to the district and presented what they learned, like an independent study course in college.

Long Island, NY(Zone 6b)

My friend lives in TN, just outside of Knoxville. You aren't kidding about them lovin' their football team! I've never seen so much orange!!!

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

OK Friday night I held a Trunk Sale and sold boocoup bucks worth so of course I put it into the new gardens.
Went to Oriental Garden Supply and bought a water feature.

Beautiful, Jo Ann!

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Just posted a thread on the subject.
DG is really expensive.
I'm influenced by so many gardeners who do their own projects.

Thomaston, CT

Loved the basalt fountain, Jo Ann--maybe I'll get to see it when I get to Pittsford--should be around the 3rd week of Aug. Today I bought 3 angel wing begonias--the tag said dragon wing!---& will plant them where I pulled out hosta--eventually I want a nice fern there, like Ursala's Red. Thom--loved the daylily list--I am pining for Circle Upon Circle!

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

I would love to see you in August.
I am investigating a RU for this area for next year when my garden isn't quite so new. I have nothing to divide for at least three more years but would like to meet everybody who could make it.
I'll mull it over this winter and come up with the best time of year for the event.

Dunkirk, NY(Zone 6a)

ALERT! ALERT!

Home Depot (mine anyway) has roses 50% off and what is left of the bulbs. I bought two hybrid teas: 'double delight' and 'reine des violettes' and a couple packs of daylilies 'grape magic' which are supposed to be a grapey purple.

A few days ago, I also bought SALE phlox from Walmart for $1.50 a container, in 'crimson something', 'fort hill' 'emerald something' and 'something daphne' and split them up where I could and edged two beds with them.

I also bought (finally) some rooting hormone and plan on going to town with a bunch of stuff. Any requests??? ;)

Here is the phlox edging. Doesn't look like much now since I have some small, new plants (this is the top of my herb bed, where I've recently cleared out a ton of lily of the valley and horrible wild onions by hand, sifting it all out 4"+ deep with my fingers and shovel) but once this all fills in and I mulch, I think will be just beautiful. I stuck one of the new roses in this area today, too!

sounds like some good buys

Dunkirk, NY(Zone 6a)

Yes - some good buys at Walmart & Home Depot. With the cold spring and increase in gas prices (and everything else) I think they're getting stuck with a glut of plants. Plus, HD lost a bunch of plants in the big heat we got for a few days (90s after 50s) so I think they all want to unload. No sales yet that I know of at the nurseries, but I did notice some more economical packs at my favorite one this year - four packs of herbs for $1.88 (Eng. lavender, sage, Russian tarragon and several others) in addition to their pricier $3 pots of herbs and perennials. While I have extra cash, I'm watching hem all like hawks for deals!

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

My favorite nursery GroMoore, has perennials buy 2 get 1 free, I'm not sure I need any, but I am sure if I go I will get some.

Long Island, NY(Zone 6b)

For anyone that starts from seed.. Thompson and Morgan is having a 50% sale http://www.tmseeds.com/

Rockport, ME(Zone 5b)

"Need any"...bwha haa haaa! I know that a new plant is not exactly a basic life's necessity, but my brain always manages to scream "I NEED THAT" if there's a particulary delicious looking flower or a plant that's different that I don't have. I don't buy shoes or purses that I "need", I buy plants! Which are usually cheaper anyway.

5 bucks Aquilegig Columbine. Now what do I do with it? It don't even give directions except full sun.

I have a William ? like that and it was planted in sun-part shade.

Thomaston, CT

I didn't need anything, but just passing by my fave nursery I saw the sign Buy 10 & spend $25--just 2.50 a plant--got a Cornwall Blue butterfly bush & lots of yarrow--Pomegranite, a beautiful intense maroon, & Pink Grapefruit, which hasn't opened yet. Too dark for a photo today--will try to post 1 tomorrow.
