What have you bought so far ?? Part 7

belleville, NJ(Zone 6a)

Do they have any black knight butterfly bush? Or white ones that get really tall?

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

tomorrow i will stop at my hosta nursery - after looking at catalogs and reviewing thier website i have a "want to have" list of close to 15 plants. hoping to keep it below 10. $$$$$ - stay tuned

Lafayette, NJ(Zone 5b)

Hi all- newbie here so I thought Id chime in with my newest attempt...
Ive got rodies, azaleas, mtn laurels, orn grasses, wiegilia and several misc evergreen Ive been 'raising' over the past 6 yrs in various beds around our property since most of them were mere inches high. Primarily battling how much the deer eat them back each winter or my dwarf blue spruces gypsy moths devoured (ugh)
Ive probably made a mistake trying a few of the 'hardier'(?) crape myrtles this year but I just had to give it a try... Im still figuring out how to navigate around here and once I do Ill be picking brains... nice forums here BTW...

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

The crapes are borderline for your zone, Chotskie, but the last few winters have been mild so it may work out. I have many.

Bill - what's on the list? Any gold ones? Any that take sun well? Those are two 'types' that I am looking for now.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

i was only going to get one sagea to complete the driveway bed which has 3 spread out and the 4th would complete the bed after I ammended the soil this spring as luck would have they are out of them - found this out AFTER i made my list - my tastes are blue and yellow varigated - and the suspects are;

June
June fever - has more intense yellow than june - may only get this between the two
Cpt. KIrk shade-med
Fragrant Blue shade small
Liberty sun med
Pizzazz - med/large shade, check this one out it looks great http://www.masonhollow.com/products.asp?table=Hosta
Rain forest sunshine shade med
Sea fire shade med
stained glass sun med/large
zounds large shade very puckered

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I'll have to check them out. June's yellow is very dependent on light. Look at the difference from back to front in this photo. The back, in full shade, is not yellow at all, but chartreuse. The front, which gets quite a bit of sun, shows signs of bleaching out (would be better if I watered it regularly - I don't). The best in my opinion are the ones in the second row.

What a trip Bill.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

i figured you would notice that there were only 9 one my list and not 15. I plan to graze through the selection of small sizes and work on the shoe horn planting method. The med will replace some bungleweed that looks great - although now it is bordering on becoming invasive. I weeded too many little sprouts this spring.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Do you have Halcyon? It's one of my favorite blues.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

yes - it is still growing up - or filling up it is prerry big. I think the voles are doing a number on them and i've been spraying some sort of vole spray down that is suppose to get rid of them for 2 months. i've also noticed there little tunnels in the driveway bed. with the fresh 8" of rototiller soil it must be like a super hwy for them.

Atkinson, NH(Zone 5a)

Wow Candyce...looks like the butterflies are having a meeting of the minds...great shot! As they say a "Kodak" moment.

Candyce (at least I think it was you) having trouble with roses in NH...I love roses, live in So. NH and have always found them troublesome...they seem to get tons of insects, and really never do spectacular) We are doing better this year...with some organic sprays containing Neem..) will let you know how we make out.

Here is the yarrow pomegranate that cost $2.50--hope it doesn't fade too much--the flash on the camera dulled it somewhat.

Liza:

Thanks for the encouragement concerning roses. Anna and I have bought rose bushes from reputable dealers over the past four years, and we have managed to kill them all off save for one. I don't know what we do to them, either, as we have followed all the 'directions on rose care' to a T.

But the one bush we have, we absolutely love, and it does very well!

I haven't been posting much but I've been lurking :) I haven't bought much this spring but take a look at our shopping spree earlier this week! http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/866340/#new We had a ball!!! And...I'm happy to report that my plants arrived from Great Garden Plants and I was pleased with what I received. I had wanted to order this new Brunnera earlier in the year but held off - at $18.95 it wasn't hard to resist! Then it dropped in price - $9.95 and I couldn't help myself - 'King's Ransom' http://www.greatgardenplants.com/index.php?fa=PAGE.view&pageId=162. Also ordered a Hart's Tongue Fern http://www.greatgardenplants.com/index.php?fa=PAGE.view&pageId=136 and VERY pleased with the size :) And what the heck, I've wanted one of these and hadn't seen them anywhere this spring - Berberis 'Gold Pillar' http://www.greatgardenplants.com/index.php?fa=PAGE.view&pageId=81. Price was a little higher than I wanted to pay ($17.95) but I had a $5.00 coupon!!! AND, got a free Daylily and fertilizer with the order. First time ordering from this company and although I probably won't place an order in the early spring it's definitely worth waiting for their sales :)

Long Island, NY(Zone 6b)

I bought Hosta Fragrant Dream, Echinacea Sundown and Summer Skies. I just couldn't help myself. I had a $10 coupon and a coupon for a free bag of mulch. Unfortunately, my niece was with me and the $10 coupon went towards a stuffed owl now named Hoot.

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

Ah! That's gonna be one loved owl, for sure, Anita. Aren't you just the cool auntie!!

I put this on the garden photos thread yesterday. GC is having a sale:

http://www.gardencrossings.com/index.cfm/fuseaction/plants.specials/index.htm

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Just got back from Ithaca, visit w/ sister and haunt nurseries.
I scored Wave petunial 3" pots $1.50.I bought 18 and planted to fill in perennial beds.
also found reasonable prices at a new nursery ,bought gallon Hardy Geraniums $10..00 look great with lime and yellow colored hostas.
Glad to be home and back w/DG 'ers.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Welcome back, Jo Ann! Good prices.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

I believe there is a final price to pay when buying plants so far into the season, perennials are exempt of course but annuals overgrown and root bound, are hard to plant and survival is questionable.
Theyre in anyway and even if they only half develope it will be a good cover.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Not the problem you might think regarding the annuals. Just tease them out and they should be fine - assuming, of course, they have been watered well and taken care of at the nursery.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

One of the paks was a bit dry but I soaked every thinh when we got to the house and it rained last night so plants were good and saturated. They look OK I 'll check in a week to see ner leaves at the base.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

3 for the price of 2 sale at Paradise Gardens.

Thomaston, CT

These sales are too tempting! Bought 3 coleus in yelow & orange shades--could use a few more, but the gardens are pretty full.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

Here are the hosta's i ended up getting yesterday. They did not have all of my list and since their web site does not have pic's for every hosta i knew i'd see others i liked.

Nice choices Bill, what is the plant behind them?
I love the really little one and do I see Guachamole in the bunch?
Love that one.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

Close-ups - see if i can remeber by memory - Rainforest Sunshine - i liked this one so much i picked it up put it in the cart because it liked it - and with list in hand had them helping me find them and when we went looking for RS I realised i's already put it in the cart - at least my taste is consistent.

Oh dear, I went to White Flower Farm's open house yesterday. Beautiful display gardens, and they served free cucumber sandwiches, lemonade, strawberries and watermellon. Also a tent sale with cheap stuff from China, but I needed a pot for my houseplant, so for $8.00 that wasn't bad. But how could I leave with perennials 30% off?? "Apricot Broadeye" Vinca, "Jester" Pennisetum (never tried ornamental grass before), "Rave On" Coral Bells, and varigated Solomon's Seal. Mmmmmm.....

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

June - they were out of june fever - they had an open house and all we sold - they told me the yellow is more vibrant and glossy than June. will go back to get it
