Guess it's that time...
Best/ worse/ ? did you learn today #46 visit with friends...
Just getting ready to leave..400 North closed, Southbound lane down to 1 lane and will be closed most of the evening..1 trucker dead, several in critical condition..we'll be taking back roads, if we leave early we might manage to get ahead of the traffic...
Be safe going home.
morning all
carol i got your fabric and its lovely!! its yellow with pink hearts.. will post a pic when i have all i need....
goodness the weather still sounds troublesome betty, take care!
great pics git!
well i am late for work and must dash
xxxx
Just finished painting class and it's bed time...some lovely projects going on...
Sorry to hear about your SP gift Liz, most likely when someone marks fragile, they play football with it..do you really think it can be repaired???? One should learn NOT to send breakables right? lol...
Highway just opened I believe..it was 3 transports and one driver dead, one not serious and I believe the other critical..we treked on home without uttering a word about the traffic..some poor family was getting bad news so our slow ride home was nothing...saying prayers for his family..Roger drove transport (car carrier) for quite some years, that was always my dread...to get that telephone call...
So dear friends, calling this a day..tired..
Gosh it is so sad about your mirror Liz. I am so glad that your plate didn't break. I love it.
Betty it seems as dangerous as our crazy wind storm casualties there but your issues are longer and more often, between snow and rain. Do you get fog often too?
We had another 0 visibility wind thing today and it blew my neighbors patio roof off and I could not see up ahead on the freeway as it was like the time we were spared in that fatal sand storm so I called the Highway Patrol and told them they better divert traffic there and why and told them they should put in some Salt Cedars or Tamarask Trees there like they have in Palm Springs to slow the sand and the Lieutenant said that was a good idea and he would run it by some people as he had not thought of it. That made me feel good, but our budget deficit is so bad, they won't spend the money I doubt. I got off the freeway and took side roads like you Betty.
We had huge T-storms today and Tornado warnings/watches to the South of Baltimore working their way across the Mid-Atlantic...
I was at work when the deluge hit! I had to go look out the door! My, oh my!!!! Sheets of water! High winds! Something weird is sure going on with the weather this year.
I am off the next 2 days! Whoopie! My goal is to have ALL my gardening "musts" finished by the weekend. I bought too many flowers--and am, actually, running out of room where to plant them.....I am sure I will find some nooks and crannies to tuck them into. Still have a lot of bulb foliage laying around. Soon---that will be gone, and I will have some open spots!
Then--I still need to prune 3 bushes--now all full of new growth. Bummer! Missed the "window"! Ran out of time to do it! Oh well--they will just have to re-grow! One of them is my Camellia--which has, by now, put out all the new growth. I hate to cut it off--but I think it needs the pruning I was talking about in mid-May. Just haven't gotten to it... Now--it may be too late.....Have to consult the "Camellia Guru"--Mike (mqiq77) in Georgia. He knows ALLLLLLLL about this plant!
HOT---HOT---HOT all week to come! 92* each day! And--with all this rain--endless humidity. I turned my A/C on today--will keep it at about 76*-78*--just to suck the humidity out of the air. So I can sleep......
Talking about sleep---------I think it is time!
Nighty-night! Gita
Sorry to hear you are all having storms, hope no damage to your gardens Gita..sounds as though you've a full few days of gardening ahead, hopefully weather will co-operate..just did a walkaround in the garden this morning to look at all the plants..doing great, no major flowering yet but it's early for that in my neck of the woods...so I'll be content to see the rock plants in bloom, flax, few iris and know the rest is to come..oooohhh must have woke the neighborhood, let out a scream, there laying next to the peony was a snake, look closer as he didn't move when I screamed, Missy my beloved cat has been hunting them again, that's great, just wish she wouldn't bring them home to my garden..your Camelia Gita is stunning...
Dawn, never think about you having sand storms, road closures because of it but I guess it's a big driving factor..best be safe and stay inside...is your soil much like beach soil? Hope the winds didn't destroy your gardens, you've worked so hard on them...
Laura, was showing the girls my lovely rose book, all were in awe..if I can't grow roses after having this rose bible, I'll
enjoy the photo's..don't you find when you are all wound up if you take a book either on birds/gardening that you are soon soothed...so will enjoy..must take it to Judy's to show them..lordy where will I put everything...have crafts to bring, my painting of my 60th and the lovely memories booklet, some treats (lol) might have to purchase a bigger car..NOT...with the price of gas even this little one is expensive to operate..but that's another subject..
ooops Suzanne just called, we're leaving early..must run
have a good time...
i was hoping you would enjoy the read if not the growing...
i imagined you drinking hot chocolate and flipping through it...
happy that you like it though my caboose is red from the paddlin! lol
*waves at everyone*
hugs
So cute Laura..how is the migraine today, do hope gone...
It's overcast today, sun is trying hard though to shine..for sure tomorrow as they are calling for high temps and sunshine all weekend..how fantastic is that..
Everyone either out at meetings or in a meeting and here I sit, backyard living magazine at hand, just had breakfast, it's payday, making my 'need to purchase and to-do list' and it's only 11:03..everyone must be busy today..do hope you've missed the storms and you are out enjoying your gardens..majority of the landscaping/planting must be done, surely must be sitting time..lol
Miss you all..
Wow, beautiful..sorry hon, that's how much I know..I've never had peonies and just love them...planted about 3..think all too deep so took soil away from their feet, not long ago I bought another (only because there was the most beautiful flower on it, planted it, only to find out it was artificial, just put it in the plant to show the coloring..imagine being so stupid...but, this morning on my walk through the garden, there are about 3 or 4 buds, waiting to open, isn't that exciting..also all my flax are waving in the wind..only the blue, not the maroon or white..slow going, but it will all be worth the wait..
How's your gardening going..making headway?
Oh Betty, glad you are predicted to have a nice weekend. More hot, humid, dry weather for us! Further south is getting really desparate for rain.
I starting reading my Backyard Living last night but my eyes closed on me! Found anything exceptional good so far?
Love the color of the camellia Gita. Name?
I have an article today that some of you might like, natural dyes from plants....nice for some crafts projects....I though of GG especially since she is into fabrics, also Laura, and Gilli.
It is a great kids project, I taught it for years.
Fun to do. Messy but fun. Thought you might like it.
Thanks Shar, will be off to read it...could be used when making gift cards out of old newspaper print couldn't it?
Yes, could be....also can be used like a loose watercolor, but is so thin it spreads quickly, but when dried, ink line drawings look nice on it.
Betty,
When planting Peonies, the "pips" are to go about 2" below the soil level. So I have read....
Too deep--and it will not bloom.
abis...The name of my camellia is "Bob Hope". It is an "oldie" variety....I need to prune my bush--now it is almost too late. All the new growth has already come forth.
It is quite difficult to root a Camellia cutting....you have to know what to do. I don't know...
So wet today! I need to finish planting several more plants I bought. Kind of have run out of room....There will be a few spots opening up once all the bulb foliage is all browned and I can just pull it up by the handfull. A couple more weeks to go.....
Here's a picture from last week. My picnic table outside covered in all the plants I still need to plant. Some of them have now been settled in--some still sit there....
Gita
That will keep you busy for a few hours..what will we all do when our gardens are in order..I try to week a bit each evening, even if I pick one garden..that being said, I've planted over 50 pkgs. of perenial seeds and must wait now just incase they are flowers and not weeds..
are camelias from the same rose family..to me they look much alike, will have to check that new Rose book won't I..lol
No, Betty. They are not in the Rose family...See the link below.
I think I need to add some pictures to the PF on this plant.....mine are prettier.....:o)

Sharon--Great article--as usual!
Gita
More bad storms for tonight. Bet you all get sick of hearing about them. Betty, I have red, pink, and white peonies. What I like to do with the white ones is cut them and put them in food coloring water like blue and they suck the color into the flower and they are beautiful. Hi to all!!! I went out and filled my smaller fish pond getting ready to turn on the waterfalls. Have to put sealer on my little wooden bridge because I left it out all winter. I just make myself more and more work. I haven't sent a pic for a while so heres one. Hugs BEV
Hi guys I have this thread watched but it didn't update on my thread watcher, I had to go find it in the parking lot and when the page came up it still said, unwatch thread? Isn't that weird?
Oh those Peonies and Camelias make my heart race. They get too much sun here, so they sell them but they seldom do good unless you have some picky conditions and a pre-set up microclimate in this area only.
No we have a mix of soils all are mostly some assemblence of caliche which is a bad bottom of the barrel type of clay. We have a lot of different types of soil in the same areas all bad, few have sand in any place but the top layer.
So Dawn, would they not sell something like topsoil that you could add to your gardens or would this not work? Guess it would be worth its weight in gold to purchase...have seen photo's of your gardens and they are lovely, can't believe how much you've achieved this year..
Bev, how close to Chicago are you? lol trying to fit in as many DG friends as I can while travelling to Glenview via Chicago..
Beautiful, very interesting about setting them into food coloring dye..would be great when doing a theme...I'm anxious to see mine..probably because my grandmother had her yard full of peonies, lilacs and snowball trees all the time I was growing..
You know, just had an idea, should go back to her home when I'm in Penetanguishene, stop by and ask if I could have one of her plants if I replaced it with another? Now that's a though...
500 miles, wow, really south right? Just saw the IL and thought OMG bet I could drop in for coffee...NOT...
Must be working late, Suzanne is still typing..geezze left the house at 6:30 and here it is 5:00 and still working..lol
Now are these photo's of this years flowers? Suzanne and Lenny have huge peonies, not sure about white ones, will have to check, don't think they will be ready to bloom for some time...
Yes these are this years. Most every year the rain and win ruins them befor Memorial day but this year they bloomed after. This was last week and they have had it with the storms.
Ok ladies, please humor this southern gal. Bev what is the gorgeous first white flower you posted. I have never seen any like that down this way.Breath taking!!!!!!!.
So beautiful. Thanks for the name and well you should brag. You deserve too.
Thank you. This is the only clematis I have had luck with. I am going to have to make a bigger and sturdyer trellis for it.

the best news is that he says we shouldnt be open on sundays were in a industrial area no bussiness's are open its dangerous and a good target for robbery with two freeway exits avalible.
