Breathe deep & tell us what smells wonderful in your garden

Chichester, NH(Zone 5b)

May try them when it's cooler later in the year, even if I got just a few blooms for a short period of time it would be worth it. I remember when I lived back in Australia I had a whole fence filled with them, they were wonderful in a vase and I had so many I could fill a vase a day easily....the scent was heavinly and the colors were such a pick me up too....we were lucky when I was growing up we lived across from a lady that sold seedlings....she would do the hard part and you could buy a dozen seedlings for under a $1.....those were they days!

Chantell, yes please post the Ixora Odoratas pick, I would love to get my hands on that one....I don't see it in her store though, is that where you bought it? She does have the red Ixora but I think that doesn't have the fragrance.

I would go ahead and message her - asking when some will be available...I know she likes to make sure they've got a healthy root ball on them before letting them go. But certainly it doesn't hurt to check with her as far as when she they might be ready. Tell her I was so thrilled with mine I had to let the rest of you know about them!! ^_^

both gardenias in full bloom now. so nice to walk past one, to the back yard, then turn the corner to be greeted by the other. i just sit in a chair and water my hay bales surrounded by the scent. sally

I moved my two suicidal gardenias out of the hot patio and into the mostly shaded area...I have my fingers crossed...

Tellin' my Gardenias to send positive thoughts to yours ^_^

San Diego, CA(Zone 10b)

Thanks Chantell! You know what, I think they do like there better! : )

I'm so happy for you!! I even noticed with my jasmines that there are some that just LOVE that direct sun...while others...are very content with bright filtered light. My Maid of Orleans gets very UNhappy looking if she gets too much sun - so she's closer to the house on the deck now..which is fine by me....blooms are closer to the door way!!!

Some think it stinks..but I love garlic & it's scent!! Pulled my first test clove today. A bit small..but still proud of my first garlic! Just add some mushrooms, parsley, a little vino...then place on top of a nice steak..Yum!!

Never thought to grow garlic...you'd think since I put it in everything that I would've given it consideration!!! Sounds YUMMY

Just ate and I'm hungry again! LOL

But I'm so glad I'm not alone. I love the garlics and onions and...
DH says what smells skunky?

Smells wonderful! LOL

Ok...dumb question is the Society garlic ornamental or can it actually be used?

Dallas, OR(Zone 8a)

Not a dumb question, but it is an ornamental. Very oderous plant and it may overpower your pretty Stephanotis,Jasimines and the rest of the fragrant plants you have posted.

My Lavaglut (lavaflow) rose bush is loaded with blooms & buds.
A very happy rose bush this year!

At times Society garlic can be overpowering and yes, I definitely would not plant it near something wonderful but it usually does not emit an odor until someone brushes against it.

It is edible though. The blades of green can be used. It was so named as it has an aftertaste that is not supposed to hang with you like garlic therefore the name. Much more acceptable in polite society. LOL

The flowers are also edible and bloom throughout the summer. There is also a variegated SG. I am charmed by the delicate blooms and of course the name...
Never a dumb question asked ~ Chantell! 8 )

My Stargazers are blooming and smelling wonderful. Several got blown over in the high winds a week ago. I cut and brought in the house, when I came back later, the whole house smelled delicious. Now I'm waiting for the Black Dragons to bloom

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

I love it when blooms decorate the house with fragrance! I've not heard of the Black Dragons ~ because of color?

Ya'll are sweet - thanx for the explanations....i'm feeling rather educated today...hugs, my friends!

Eureka, CA

It is always a pleasure to view fellow DG members contributions. One of my favorites for scent is Zaluzianskya capensis
(AKA Midnight Candy) (AKA Night Phlox). While this little gem make not pack the visual 'awe', the unique & enticing sweet scent of the 'Midnight Candy' is alone enough worth considering to at least have in container/pot or two to place on your deck/porch or window.
Last year was my first year of growning this....and found that it had a tendancy to get a little ragged looking even though it is a multi-branching plant. This year, I have been clipping and keeping the plant to a nice compact height...found that this really encouraged
extensive repeat blooming. I have multiple plants situated in various locations ie: full sun, in pot on deck with partial sun in Redwood setting etc... This little trooper is pretty darn hardy...worthy of having in your garden just for the scent alone!

Something goofy going on with this rose. First bloom was perfect,
second bloom looks like this. It is a Peace rose believe it or not.
Very strange...

victorianblu - do you grow those from seed or purchase plants? I'd forgotten about that plant - years ago I remember wanted to grow it.

Dahlonega, GA

when that bloom goes, beahive , cut that sucker off and root it . it's beautiful. sally

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

bea, I adore lavaglut too.

chantell, I know I owe you pics, I have been shamefully lazy. my jasmines have the beginning of buds. also plumies.

pod is correct about soc garlic. I particularly like the bit about society ladies preferring it over reg. garlic because it left no aftertaste. I had a variegated one but lost it. would like to get another one but now that gas is over $4, I think items in my want list will have to stay there a little bit longer, sigh...

Jasminum simplicifolium - teeny little blooms with a powerful scent :-)

Nery - no worries...things are all blooming....their fragrance filling the air...I choose not to think of gas prices while in the yard...ahhhhh

Dahlonega, GA

i hope my gardenias last a few more days , so that my visiting sis, can enjoy them next week ,when she gets here. anyone have any suggestions as how to prolong the scent ? it seems they lose it all when they turn brown . sally

Sinking spring, PA(Zone 5b)

These are my "little" Murraya standards (not kidding- I have bigger trees than these). Here they are full of flowers. This scent is so heavy and sweet just standing near these makes you feel that scent isn't just a sense that your nose can detect. The perfume fills your lungs and you feel like you are tasting the smell.

Gorgeous photo F4F....seriously a very good photo!! Mine plants are just teeny and I know how nice that scent is...I simply can't even imagine....

Bec_No_Va, do the jasminum simplicifolium live as a prennieal, or do you have to bring them in.I grow confederate J., and Carolina J., the C. goes wild down here, and the Confederate lives as an evergreen. Both have a "grab your attention smell"I would like to add the J. simplicifolium as one of my sweet smells.Mike

This lily is stunning. Not sure if it is fragrant as I been having troubles with my allergies and need not take in additional pollen while sniffing it.
