Breathe deep & tell us what smells wonderful in your garden

Chantell, sunset zones are only for the West of the US. These zones were established because the "regular" zones 1 thru10 didn't differentiate the desert, mountain and ocean climates we have over here...For example, Annie and I could both be 10, but as you can see we're still in totally different susnet zones, she's 16 and I'm 24!

Bucyrus, OH(Zone 6a)

Actually Rob they have extended the sunset zones now into the entire country. I am in sunset zone 41.

Really!? Well that's fabulous, these zones are SO MUCH more realistic! I'm curious how they set it up, will check that link right away. Thanks joe!

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

Sunset zone 31 here... I find it more precise but still have trouble wrapping my brain around it. I have the Sunset Natl Garden book which does list the Sunset zones for the various plants. I've never seen them used elsewhere.

Berkeley, CA(Zone 10a)

I cant remember my kids birthdays much less 2 growing zones and a zipcode plus 4!

Chantel, you are right about white flowers being very fragrant. I've found that many white orchids also have that same fragrance.
Many fragrant flowers seem to be white to attract night flying pollinators. The ghost orchid is a good example.

Berkeley, CA(Zone 10a)

mmmmm white heliotrope....

Chichester, NH(Zone 5b)

Here's one orchid I picked up yesterday at the USF sale.....speaking about white orchids.....this is so fragrant it is unbelieveable

is the lavender simplicity new for you? I've been eyeing it but I have nothing lavender in my garden. however, i'm interested because it's fragrant.

Sinking spring, PA(Zone 5b)

Chantell- going back to the Ixora odorata- I am a little surprised at your response to the scent. I have noticed that mine is not consistently "emitting strongly"- not sure if it si the time of day or humidity level or what have you. But I can tell you that when we have this plant at our display at a trade show, people track us down from many aisles away to find out what smells so wonderful. Did you have to stick your nose to the flower, or could you smell it in the air all around you?

San Diego, CA(Zone 10b)

Vossner - it's suuuuper fragrant! ah! It's kinda nice for my garden because I have lots of night fragrant plants, and with this rose, the more sun, the more fragrance!

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

Amity has 1 gal Lavender Simplicity roses for $10. I want them so bad, where to plant them, where?

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

F4F - :( sadly I had to stick my nose right in it - as I said it was a pleasant fragrance - just didn't carry...will give her a little time to grow up some

Is it on a root stock? Is that necessary where you are? That didn't seem to be a link to a vendor that you posted unless I am mistaken.........

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

hey I got something going. It is Sweet Chariot, a mini rose growing in a hanging basket. It is a tough rose, has not been treated with kid gloves (shame on me). Anywho, the fragrant on it is fabulous, exquisite. Sorry, no pic, camera is broken.

Everybody, pls get you a Sweet Chariot. You can also plant it inground and makes a 3 X 3 shrub.

San Diego, CA(Zone 10b)

Vossner, what color is sweet chariot? Did you end up getting lavender simplicity? You should go for it! : )

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

pink. No i didn't get the Simplicity because I don't have room. Yesterday I spent all morning cleaning patio pots and it convinced me I don't need any more plants, not any! lol

PS: I did get Autumn Damask 'cause I killed the cuttings Melva gave me and I got Rose Oranges & lemons 'cause I've been wanting it for a while.

and that's it, I mean it, finito, no more plants, no bulbs, nothing....(who am I kidding? lol)

San Diego, CA(Zone 10b)

Berkeley, CA(Zone 10a)

Annie, same here! : )
Has anybody heard of an annual called Reseda odorata? I read about it somewhere and I got curious about the fragrance...
http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/1943/

Bucyrus, OH(Zone 6a)

I tried reseda odorata last year and was unimpressed. To my nose it smelled faintly of grape koolaid. Supposedly seeds taken from plants that have been allowed, for a few generations, to "go to seed", revert back to the less fragrant "wild" form, http://members.ozemail.com.au/~davcooke/reseda.htm , reseda phyteuma . Look for cultivars like Machet, http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/77706/ .

I had a similar experience to Joegee's. The named variety tip makes sense! Thanks.
