She's about to ....

Midwest City, OK(Zone 7b)

how about a thread of who's going to bloom first between Newbies. Kim, you have to start with a new plant. that's your excuse so go get another one. :)) Or we may not have to start a new thread. I've seen many others on here that are longer, but downloading may get to be a problem later.

I think we all have new plants, we still need to get Samigal and Abbis going though... hmm. I don't know how to get past Abbis HOA. Or Newbies say "Show off your..... Y"

Anjl that model is adorable. Have you seen the miniature gardens they are building over in garden art? It would be great to do one of those...Very talented DH you've got there..

I'm am planning on leaving my brugs out too. I have had two people say it can be done here. Both mulch real heavy before the frost, they both take cuttings off to root, one turns a pot over hers, the other one wraps it in bubble wrap. They say it comes back even stronger every year.

I still have no brug flowers to post, so I will just try to find something pretty. Have a good weekend. Weather permitting, I am not going to be on this computer this weekend, outside is calling. Take care, Peg

Ha ha ha bad Peg ; } Guess I will just have to get another brug... I plan on leaving mines in the ground this winter too with LOTS of protection. I will cut them way back first... might work maybe not but I will have cuttings just in case! Have fun playing in the dirt Peg!!

Midwest City, OK(Zone 7b)

Anjl, here's the mini I was talking about. Now I'm gone for real tonight. Too much weeding to be done....

Audrey

(Kim) Philadelphi, PA(Zone 6a)

Welcome Audrey!!! The more the merrier : )

(Kim) Philadelphi, PA(Zone 6a)

Audrey don't forget to post pics and tell what brugs you have!!!!
Nite : )

(Audrey) Dyersburg, TN(Zone 7a)

I think they're noids. Pink and yellow, and I don't have a camera yet! Audrey

(Marion) Havana, FL(Zone 8b)

Okay, I have been following this -probably no surprise to some--and I had vowed no more plants until research but you gals can wear a person down--I really mean down!!
How much sun will it really need in the hot Florida sun? Morning and aftenoon shade do? Past the HOA? Well my LDH always said it was better to ask forgiveness than to ask permission! Sooooooooooo, what can they do? Buy my house from me--not likely. Do they have a plan with all the trees marked--not!

Guess I am, oh no I'm not----yes I am breaking down and just might have to get me one.

(Kim) Philadelphi, PA(Zone 6a)

Noids are beautiful!!! What is HOA????? Don't know much about Florida sun but i'm sure there is a brug for you ; } prolly more than one lol.

(Marion) Havana, FL(Zone 8b)

Home Owners Association. Ta Ta!!! Have to have approval before any trees cut, major landscaping etc. I will get by this --just another hurdle in the race of life.

Can be brutal in the afternoon. Burn things quickly. I do have some filtered shade tho so I will start looking.

(Kim) Philadelphi, PA(Zone 6a)

Oh....the garden police fooey! Sounds like you have a spot all picked out ; }
Nitey night.... I mean it this time : )

(AnjL) Fremont, CA(Zone 9b)

abbi, beckygardener is also in fl and she has brugs... I know she has mentioned that she needs to find shade for them... you might ask her :o)

peg, that is way too cool! I wonder if they have bonzai brugs?! wouldnt that be neat? a lil mini brug path leading to my mini arbor?!

I showed DH your pix...now his mind is spinning again! I can just see the next creation already forming! LOL! It only took him 2 evenings to build that model arbor... complete with the steps and all! I teased him about not having lil tiny bricks on the steps, now he's talking about hitting the craft store for the lil fake brick walkways they have!!! LOL!

(Becky) Colmesneil, TX(Zone 8b)

Nassau County, NY(Zone 7a)

Hello everyone and welcome Audrey! Well will have a nice day today, so i will not be around much this week end. Peg, nice mini, it is beautiful.
Audrey, I am not in the hot baking sun of Florida, but I also read in other brug treads about the hot sun that can burn them when the heat is too intense. Oneanj, didn't you see one where there was a fried brug bud in CA, I recall that one a couple of weeks ago. Any way guys, off to the garden I go now and later boating, finally! Nice week end everyone, Clemen

Midwest City, OK(Zone 7b)

Good Morning All. Thunder and lightening outside. I will have nice pictures of weeds to show you soon! Kim we need more pictures of your MEM. Pleeeeaaassse.... another newbie question, how long do the blooms last??

Audrey, Welcome to our nice, nutty and romantic group. We started out with newbie brugs, but as you can tell we pretty much talk about anything, and have fun doing it. Feel free to jump in any time. We meet here almost daily..

Abbis, have you considered growing it in a nice pot? That is not considered permanent and I don't know how the HOA could complain, though from what I've heard, grrrr. I have read a lot of threads of people growing them in pots until they are rootbound, then repotting, easier to fertilize and easier to control their sun and shade. Just a thought, see I really was thinking 'bout ya. Now, Samigal, hmmm... Oh, Clem has some of hers in pots, ask her Abbis...

Anjl, I told you wrong! I apologize. That mini is from the container gardens and she explains a lot about how she did it and she has started a second one now.

Beck, I really thought about going to that RU, but it was a 6 hr. drive for me. I even mapped it out. :)) But I just did not have the time, even if I flew in. Have fun. I have heard they are really a special time and newbies come home with all kinds of plants. :))

(Kim) Philadelphi, PA(Zone 6a)

Hey hey hey !!!! Morning all : ) brugs grow fine in pots...heat wave here I gotta get out before it gets steamy. MEM only had one bloom : (. Wow the RU is gonna be a blast...take lots of pics!!!
The blooms last a couple of days for me longer when not so hot.

Okay, I slept in today. Exhausted for the week. Thanks Oneanjl, I will certain check the Beckygardener. Pots are what I am considering using as the tree roots are so plentiful and extremely hard to dig!! I am doing most all of my plants in containers this year--including the veggie my daughter is growing.

What a beautiful color in the picture. Looks like a rosey pink. Is it? Have a good weekend everyone--need to get some House (ouch!) cleaning done today.

Nassau County, NY(Zone 7a)

I love that one too Kim! I hav all of mine in pots too, must bring them inside in the winter, or else they die! Clemen

(Kim) Philadelphi, PA(Zone 6a)

Morning!!! Just finished spraying and watering brugs,bananas,ee's and roses with the recipe before it gets to hot..we have our first heatwave here. Something is making a feast of my brugs and dats and leaving the hosta alone.@#$& drats!!! Oh well off to my weekly HD date with DH ; }
Kim

Nassau County, NY(Zone 7a)

Kim, what do you do with the babanas, bring them indoors? I always wanted to get one, but just the thought of bringing in this huge plant into the house makes me nervous! I already have a bird of paradise that is huge! Enjoy your day, Clemen

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

......Hi brug lovers! Peg sent me d-mail, I've been working outside on several projects, one of which I hope I can accomplish before Fall... lol, I'll get it all done, it just takes longer than it used to. I worked the last three days for over 12 hours a day, the darkness, tiredness and skeeters brought me inside each day. I HOPE to be working on brugs and hibiscus this coming weekend... ;) . I've skimmed the thread, you are wondering about brugs Y-ing? If the cutting is from BELOW the Y it will take longer to Y. If the cutting was taken from above the Y it will be a bushier plant and may Y sooner. The brug will have to grow and mature to blooming age.. this pic is from a few years ago, but here is a branch coming off about 2-3 ft up the trunk.. that is not a "Y", it could have been a cutting, but I let it grow out, it too divides to Y and set buds. It will look like a definate Y, your single growth tip will divide of and there's your Y... You can see the actual Y above the roof of my house on the brug in front in the big blue tub. I'll check in again this afternoon, I hope I helped.. questions, please?

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

:) Guess you could see it, IF I'd post the pic! lol

Thanks for your time AuntB. Your garden looks so peaceful and pretty. Are those Black Magic EEs in the back? I'm trying those for the second year. The squirrels ate them up last year but so far this year they like the hostas better. Cute little varmints :((

I think some of what I think are Y's may be just side branches. But we will just have to see with our newbie brugs :)) I can just see all of us out with our magnifying glasses now. Tee Hee.

Hope everyone had a safe and happy weekend. We are now in our second day of almost continual rain, and oh, we needed it bad, but I miss being outside. I'm having to do that four-letter word "clean" Okay, it's five letters but Yuck!

I just got an e-mail from Parks and they have brugs for $4 and $5 on sale. I've never done business with them and don't know how they got my e-mail, but I am going to look at it closely. Peg

Nassau County, NY(Zone 7a)

Aunt b, thansk for replying to us newbies, you've been busy, hope your hard work pays off soon, your advise is always so welcome, we need wise and wonderfull friends like you!
Peg, rain is good, we have had a lot of it lately, although a lot of cold spells too, but hey, we can save on water too right? This week end was hard on the plants 100 degrees, I had a good time on the boat, but the babies, oh wel ,you can water them alot and that is all you you can for them, I love hot weather though!

So what is this Parks place with brugs at $5, is that mail order????

Anyway, glad to see you back on our tread! Clemen

(Kim) Philadelphi, PA(Zone 6a)

Hello everyone!! AuntB glad you stopped by : )
Clem my bananas are small I am going to leave them in the ground and hope they return ...basjoo...musella and a pink ornamental. Hey a girl can dream right???? I have a noid that I will bring in..thanks Jeanne!! www.parkseed.com has brugs on sale. Hey Peg you done the bad word ; } Stay safe and cool y'all!

(Becky) Colmesneil, TX(Zone 8b)

hello everyone!!
I am back from the RU... and what a ball!!!!!..lol We had sooo much fun .. and the plants!! Wow... being a newbie... I still don't know all the names of the plants! go to the central TX RU and you will see me..lol.. in my usual nuttiness.OH I am the one sticking out my tongue!!.. I am a little bit of a nut!

Peg.. you really missed it.. wish you had come so I could meet you! PLEASE blow that rain down here. We still haven't had a drop!

Aunt B.. beautiful garden to go sit and enjoy... Gosh that brug is huge.... I know how big that pot is you have it planted in and that pic helped explain the Y to me..TY

nite everyone.. this gal is pooped!!

Nassau County, NY(Zone 7a)

Hi friends, another hot day, however, thunderstorms later. We should cool off by the evening. Kim good luck with those bananas, they are tropicals, maybe if you have them against a wall and mulch them really heavy they might survive! I potted my new brugs yesterday, they look beautiful! Have a nice day everyone, see you all later, Clem

Midwest City, OK(Zone 7b)

Kim, the basjoo banana is considered hardy here. It stays outside all year round and comes back thicker and thicker. I really kind of think that one would make it for you.

Beck, you are too cute in that picture, tongue and all. I am so glad you got to go. I wish I could have made it, too. I ended up in the emergency room with my daughter with a broken (make that shattered) ankle. She had come over to visit and fell. No fun. :((

Yes, I am still looking closely at those brugs on sale. Cassie's Curls really caught my eye. Hmmm. My Dr. Seuss is getting bushy as can be, not much taller yet, but really putting on the leaves.

Just got off work, so naptime for me. Check ya'll later. Peg

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

So sad about your daughter's ankle, Peg. I hope she's feeling better. Clem, you should be able to keep a basjoo banana in the ground. I kept one over winter in the ground here (zone5), but it really struggled the next spring. I had to chop it back a little and protected it with leaves packed under a laundry basket.. The next year, (banana plant#2, I dug it up and attempted to keep in the basement... I don't think I watered it enough, or maybe there wasn't enough light..
I enjoy sharing, plant matter and what I've learned, so you guys feel free to get my attention, (bonnie@kanorado.com). I wish I could just garden at home and on play at Dave's.. but that doesn't pay the bills...lol I have missed everyone here. The blue tub pic was 2006..Here is a pic of the same plant, planted in the spot the little pond was in 2006 (pond behind chiminea) Fall of 06, I whacked the "tree" off at dirt level, it rooted in a bucket in the basment over winter. Spring 07 I gave the little preform pond away (I thought I was going to move and would get a "real" (bigger) pond, but I didn't).. so I planted the rooted "tree" in the existing pond hole. It didn't bloom until August, but it kept more of it's leaves (holes are from a hail storm) and took the heat better than the potted brugs, but didn't bloom as soon. In fall last year, I whacked it off at ground level again and attempted to over-winter the rootball in the ground (as an experiment).. not successful and now I have an ugly stump. If I put anymore in the ground they will first be in a drilled pot, then planted, enjoyed and dug in fall. The experiment brug is a pink noid and I named it Amanda's Pink Tree Brug. (in honor of our very own AmandaTaylor in TX) - she posted the original "I think I'm losing my brug" post and she didn't lose her brug. I do have a baby one rooted to replace the one I sent her that got stolen from her porch earlier this year. So anytime you wonder if I know something or had experience trying something new, just email me, I'll do whatever I can. And I want to express my appreciation for everyone sharing their knowledge, that and growing them is how I've learned so much about brugs. 9 years ago, I didn't know brugs existed. lol
I do know your anticipation of the Y and it's promise of buds and blooms. I go through it with each new brug I'm fortunate to acquire.

AuntB you are so wondefull with your advise and experience, it is just lovely to read your writings! Thanks so much! do you have any expirience with Datura seeds? i am tryig to grwo some and oh well they are giving me a hard time.....And the banana ones, they do not give fruit do they????

Peg, I hope your darling baby is doing better with her leg, and Meg where r you, we are loosing you LOL, Clemen

(Marion) Havana, FL(Zone 8b)

I am sure these are not the type bananas being talked about but I couldn't resist showing my last bunch just before I sold my house in Gainesville. Was a volunteer that was sleeping in a huge pot DH purchased when his office moved to new building and could no longer use.

Thumbnail by abbisgranma
NE, KS(Zone 5b)

Thank You, Clemen. Datura, I have one in a 4in nursery pot on my deck, the plant is about 10 inches tall and has a bud... it is waiting patiently to be potted up or in the ground. I had a weak second and bought one this year. I have gotten seed to germinate before, I treated them like brug seeds, if I remember right....but none lived to bloom, I probably over or under watered them. I'm not sure about the basjoo banana, I do know there are ones people grow in pots that produce fruit.. I think the plant dies after fruiting, but it would have thrown off pups on underground runners first to keep the circle going. Do you know abbisgranma? Do they die off? I love that picture, Mmmmmmm. Beck I wanted to say I enjoyed a Midwest round-up last Spring, it's so fun to put faces with DG names, great social time and such variety on plants and seeds for swapping, it was great! Goodness, look at the time.. nightie nite all.

(Becky) Colmesneil, TX(Zone 8b)

Hi all..

Fianally settling down for the night....
peg you don't know it, but I asked you to blow us some rain... well honey it worked..lol we got 3 much needed inches!! I didn't get my new plants in the ground, but they will wait till tomorrow. OH I got a couple brug cuttings too!!!!

Aunt B aren't these RU's fun? And it is nice to put faces with the dg names.. but for some reason the dg name sticks more than the real name...? lol

There is another RU that Dave himself is putting on near Tyler,TX.. June 28th I think. Peg that one ought to be closer for you... I am still not certain I can go, but there are a lot of dger's I would like to meet at that one. these RU's are as addicting as the flowers are..lol

Nite all

(AnjL) Fremont, CA(Zone 9b)

Hi Everyone!
I've been busy the last few days, sorting and packaging and postaging gloves! lol! All done now! (thankfully!)

Where is parks? what is parks? I need to go look! LOL!

Also wanted to let all the newbies here know that I bought some rooted brugs here on the DG marketplace (4 of them) from gone2seed.... and they are wonderful! big healthy rooted cuttings! One of them didnt make it...and she even replaced it for free!

I keep watching my brugs daily for buds...but nuttin yet! :o(

okay, off to get some much deserved rest LOL!

(Audrey) Dyersburg, TN(Zone 7a)

AuntB, I have grown datura from seeds. They come back readily here just by dropping them on the gropping them on the ground. That's the plain white ones. They don't need special care like brugs. My neighbor has them thick as hair on a dogs back where hers dropped seed! Gonna swipe me one or two! She wont mind!
Audrey

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

The white busy ones are considered a weed here, Jimson weed I think they call it. I call them moonflower bushes, I like them and I broadcast a handfull of seed at the edge of my property in hopes of some taking hold this spring, nothing showing yet. I can't seem to grow it as a specimen, so I thought they could "naturalize"...The actual datura are white, white with purple, and yellow, they have doubles and I think even triples. I don't think they reseed as readily as the "jimson weed" kind. The pods are prickly but contain hundreds of seeds. Then there is the moonvine.. it is in the potato family I think, or is it morning glory family? I really don't think there is a flower I couldn't learn to love. Dave's RU in TX sounds like a great time! Funds and time will not allow me to make it this time, but I'm sure a grand time will be had by all. I will check out the pics posted afterward and enjoy the event through those who attend. Maybe next time. But I would love to make one and swap for some lovely tropical stuff you Texans grow down there.

(Audrey) Dyersburg, TN(Zone 7a)

I didn't mean jimson weed. They stink! This is white datura, and it LOOKS like jimson weed, but it's not. I've had moonvine, too. Lovely, great scent!
Jimson weed is considered a weed here, too! I think it is everywhere! I thought they were so pretty when I was a kid!
Audrey

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

Aw, they stink? I didn't realize that. Well, I thought since I can't seem to grow the datura as an annual, I'd chance an invasion of weeds with big night blooming trumpets.. time will tell.

(Becky) Colmesneil, TX(Zone 8b)

Aunt B.. I am thinking about the E TX RU... I had soo much fun at the Central RU !!

I just grew some dats from seeds.. My first flower seeds ever..lol . I planted great white with purple specks and double purple something ... I sure hope they reseed, cuase if they don't ,I probably will not grow them again.

Audrey.... we have a home in Petersburg, TN also. Not too terribly far from you. We have.. had..lol we are retired... a hog farm there, and I remember we delivered lots of them to Dyersburg.

anjl.... glad you are back.. was wondering if you were ok!

abbisgranma... just got some bananas at the RU.... hope mine will look like yours!! Gorgeous!!
