More Caladium Pictures

I just love these Galaxy's - I planted these 3 weeks ago, just to join up the front bed with the border. These are in full intense afternoon sun for most of the day and are doing well. I planted some sunpatience in the same bed and they're doing better because the Caladiums are shading their roots. It really add's something considering I just had those yellow/green umbrella plants.

Hehe...I know Kitty! They are something else!

Bill...You know I'm just kidding around! However, you do have the BEST caladium bulbs in the world!

Port Charlotte, FL(Zone 10a)

Bill, you know I've tried a few Thai varieties. Other than Thai Beauty, I'm just not crazy about them. They're not as hearty, tiny bulbs and possibly two leaves at a time? I guess I'm just spoiled.

Port Charlotte, FL(Zone 10a)

9Kitty! You sure have some gorgeous Caladiums going on there! I love all your varieties and thank-you for the for-warning of the rotten Caladium bulb! hahaha

Caladiums in a Container garden...

Thumbnail by KatG
Tampa, FL(Zone 10a)

Kitty Mom,

I have had 100% success saving my bulbs from year to year by leaving them in the container in a cool dry place. The bulbs/plants will get bigger with each new season and make a more impressive plant.

Happy Birthday, Bill! ^_^

KatG,

Almost all of the caladium bulbs that are sold in the USA are grown east of Tampa. They do very well here in our long hot summers.

I will have to try and take more photos when I am out and about. It is a shame they aren't more widely planted.

You're right Dale...they really are underplanted and they're such a reliable, pleasing plant. And they certainly don't ask for much. They love my crappy soil, out-perform everything else when it's hot and not raining and they're beautiful! I've become Caladium-crazed and I poke a couple of bulbs into a lot of my containers and when the annuals melt away, I still have something gorgeous. I'm learning!

I really enjoy your photo's on the various threads. I'd love to see some Caladium plantings.

PS: Are those Caladiums in the back of the Gingerlands? Dark green with pink spots? I like that!

Talking about Thai Caladiums...

My Pig is finally starting to produce! hehe. I bought these exotic Thai bulbs just to try them out. They were expensive, tiny and they only produce a couple of leaves at a time. There is probably 6 bulbs in this planter and it's pretty, but from now on, I think I'll stick with American!

Beautiful Tommy! What's that dark red one in the rear of the photo?

Port Charlotte, FL(Zone 10a)

These are kind of cute though...Very tiny leaf. I suppose I'm just used to these GIGANTIC leafed bulbs that Bill sells me!

There are 2 bulbs in this Container and the leaves come out one at a time...They are really pretty though and start out very Chartruese. As they get older they turn more Yellow which is really an unusual color for Caladiums...They fitted in well with this container planting. (there's a Gerber daisy in there also, but no matter what I do to make their little life comfortable, they hate me! LOL)

Dale, I wonder if it's because they are grown so close that they are considered too common? Therefore not appreciated for the wonderful plants they are?
In my area you don't see too many of them either. They aren't hardy here, in most stores they are on a bulb rack not potted and growing so people are drawn more to the annuals that are already blooming. The places that do sell them already started have big pots of them and they are expensive.
This is my front walkway where all my Caladiums are planted either in pots or the window boxes on the front of my house.

I recently removed some common day-lilies that had been growing to the left of the arbor and moved these out there. The trumpet vine over head seems to give them just enough shade. They get a little morning sun and that's about it.

They look great Holly!

I never see anybody plant Caladiums around here. I think it has something to do with people not being familiar with Bulbs and if they are., they think it's like up North where bulbs take so long to appear!

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

These are growing to the right. All of these out front were extras. I wasn't sure how well mine would over winter so I bought some extra just in case. Luckily mine overwintered very well so I needed to find something to do with the extras. I had a couple of old pots that I used if I would have realized that they would end up out there I would have gotten some nicer pots for them. I've been thinking about trying to paint them with that spray on stone paint. I should be able to do that without damaging the plants.

I think they look fantastic and the pot looks good too. I'm like you, I worry about the pot, but half the time the plants grow so much they cover them up. If that's a plastic pot and you want to change it...I've painted a few with the Krylon fusion paint. It's really good and is made especially for vinyl.. Holds up really well!

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

These on the left of the doorway. Other than the ones in my window boxes this is what I have at my house. I planted two large pots at my parents and a row of White Christmas in a bed of impatiens that runs between the two pots. Looks very nice and boy do they get a lot of compliments on them. I need to remember to take my camera up and get a few shots of those.

Happy, Happy Birthday!

Hope you have a beautiful day, full of sunshine and lovely caladiums ... and of course, cake and ice cream too!

Seattle, WA

Happy Birthday from here, too, Bill!

Holly, what are the caladiums on the right in Post #5245932 (looks like red veins, pinkish spots, and green margins)? I want some of those!

Anybody in Florida going to the caladium festival? http://www.lpfla.com/events/caladium.htm

Kat,
I have NO idea!

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Anitra, I planted Red Flash for my Mom's pots last year. She likes red flowers. I have very little red it's not a favorite of mine. Hers were so beautiful last year that I decided I had to have some of those for myself. LOL
Here is a picture from last year of hers Red Flash and Gingerland.

Thank you, both Holly and Bill. Red Flash goes on my shopping list. :)

Holly, does Gingerland look a lot like Miss Muffett in reality, or just in photos? I was thinking of growing some more Miss Muffetts; now I think I may try Gingerland instead. I really like the Gingerland and Red Flash together!

All my caladiums so far are in combinations. I will keep putting them in posts instead of in the garden, so that I can bring them indoors the minute the weather cools off. Also, because I have extremely limited garden space.

This is my Porch Garden. It's chaotic, but remember this is my first year doing flower containers! :)

Thanks for the birthday wishes gang!! It's been a rough day. I found out this afternoon that one of my best friends died this morning. It really, really sucks!!!!!!!!!!!! He was only two weeks older then me. That's on top of finding out my mother was in a car wreck this morning. She fell asleep driving back from Fort Lauderdale. "Thank God" she's OK!!!! Needless to say I won't be forgetting my 49th birthday anytime soon.

anitra,

Gingerland and Miss Muffet have a couple things in common . They're both straps and they both have red spots. Other then that they don't look anything each other.

Woodway, TX(Zone 8a)

vossner, I happened to use White Wing and Florida Sweetheart together because they are both small in scale (relatively) and both are recommended for sun exposure- but they do look good together, don't they? The red were very slow to come up and develop- and they are shorter and don't show up as much as the white. So next year I may use a few more red and a few less white. Anyway, TKS to you and mgh.
For the record, these are not from Caladiums4Less, although he has many friends on DG (obviously) and I'm sure his bulbs are of top-notch quality as were these. I'm new to DG, but have ordered from a company in Lake Placid for a number of years which gives such outstanding service that I've developed a relationship with them.
