Florida Beauty Caladiums. I planted these last year and they came up terrible this season so I rescued them and planted them in containers and they're better than they were! They're huge and they like the filtered sun under the pool cage.

And these Miss Muffets sure seem to like Container living!

Bill - that Thai Caladium site is unbelievable! Do you remember I asked you about the "black caladium"? There is actually one in that incredible bunch that looks similar. Love the yellow ones too! The are something else!

Here's 3 varieties of Thai Caladiums. I've got 2 of the Chartruese variety in another pot! They are pretty!

katG, are u talking about the dark purple one w/ pink spots? I bought some and it had the name rubrum in it. I will look some more. For some reason I seem to remember I was confused as to whether it was a caladium or a xanthosoma.

I planted mine inground, part shade and it did poorly as it seems to get smaller each season.

Your thai caladiums look robust and beautiful

Is this the Dark Purple y'all are talking about?

not the one i'm talking about. I'm googling like crazy to find the one i'm talking about.

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

the fun folk at the yahoo buying group had an asiatica/thai caladium coop. all these were available. I didn't participated 'cause it was a really quick one and I didn't have time to "study" selections. they were cheap too.

Toadsuck, TX(Zone 7a)

Didn't know about the Yahoo one Voss...tell me more...they do have some worth a second look, but I really don't want anything to tempermental...

eyes, that's the one i'm talking about. caladium var. rubricundrum. Here is a better pic. of it. Mine, BTW, is dark. I'm sure the amount of sun affects whether it's very dark or not.

katG, is that the one you were wanting to ID?

I am just Loving the looks of some of the Thai Caladiums! I know I will want to order a few of those next year if Bill offers them!

I have something chewing on a couple of my Caladiums, possibly a bunny? Has anyone else had this problem?

Well, it might help if I post the right photo. Here's a white one that the bottom of the leaf has been chewed off.

I have ornamental sweet potato vines growing all over the place and I'm finding little holes in those as well as a few caladiums.

We do get grasshoppers at times but I haven't seen any this year but I will be keeping a watch out ... those things can do a lot of damage. I hate using chemicals but I might just have to resort to doing so to get rid of whatever is eating my plants.

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

I've always thought they were slugs eating the potato vine but somebody here it was something else, don't remember what. Mine look like swiss cheese at about same time every summer. I don't even bother to fight. don't know what's eating your caladium, I have not had that happen and I have a few grasshoppers here and there...they must like something else better.

Toadsuck, TX(Zone 7a)

Well if it's four legged...I don't think it's gonna come back..LOL...

Nery,

That is one the one I have too. It has a purplish black leaf with the lighter lavender colored spots. I found mine on Ebay a couple years ago from someone here in FL
I think the most leaves I've seen at one time on it was three. Right now it only has one leaf and it seems to be struggling a little. I'm going to move it to my Caladium hospital I built. It'll get allot of shade and I'll give it a little more TLC. If I could get the thing to produce more then three leaves it'd probably be beautiful. I'll take a pic of mine when I get home.

Linda,
It could very well be a rabbit doing that to yours. I am extremely hopeful that I'll be carrying some Thai's next year. The grower in Thailand I've been corresponding with seems to be really excited about doing business next year.

Woo Hoo ... I sure hope so Bill. I am really getting "into" Caladiums again and really like the looks of some of those Thai's that folks have posted pictures of and links to!

I remember back in the 70's ordering Caladium bulbs from someplace down in the center part of the state ... I used to get brochures in the mail every year but don't remember the name of the company - probably long gone by now. The Caladium bulbs I got from them were no comparison in any way to the ones I got from your company in the co-op this year! And, the ones I see in the local garden centers around here do not compare either. I am just so thrilled with how mine look. I love that some will do so well in part sun! Is that something new or have they been around a long time? I always thought Caladiums all had to be in deep shade, especially here in Florida. I am loving the fact that I can now get shade lovers as well as some that will take a bit of our hot sun!

Lake Placid, FL(Zone 9b)

Linda,

All caladiums love shade!!! Even the varieties that are sun tolerant will do better in the shade. They will however survive the sun ALLOT better then the ones that don't. If you plant a variety in the sun that doesn't want to be, it'll either burn real bad or the coloring will look bad. An example, if Kathleen gets to much sun the pink center will bleach itself out and it's for lack of a better word, an "UGLY" plant. Planted in the shade, it's beautiful.

Port Charlotte, FL(Zone 10a)

Linda: I've been having the same problem with my Rosebuds and now the Galaxy's - Something has been having a huge feast! In my case I think it's rabbits! They just don't like the pink parts! hehe

Vossner and Eyes! Yep, that's it - Caladium rubricundrim. They look so cool. However, if they're like this Thai variety...they struggle. I bought this one from Asiatic and they are 2 leaves at a time and very small! Needs a lot of shade also. Very striking though in a Container.

Caladium 'Leung Pa Li Chart'

As far as mututions go - This is one of the strangest I've seen. These "Pink Symphony" are very pretty and unusual but look very different from pictures I've seen of them. They just don't know what they want to be when they grow up! hehe

another Pink Symphony view...

Thumbnail by KatG
Port Charlotte, FL(Zone 10a)

Bill - Maybe you should market these as "Leung Pa Li Bill" next year! hahahahaha

Lake Placid, FL(Zone 9b)

Kat,

The Pink Symphony I had this year came from a farm I don't normally get it from and your picture is exactly why I won't get it from them again next year. If the farm I normally get it from doesn't have it next year, I won't get it.
They ran out "REAL" early this year and I didn't know it until it was to late. Next year I will stock up on it early!!!
I don't know what it is that's causing the huge difference but it's caused me more then a few headaches this year. It's the same thing with the Fire Chief. That's another one where there's a BIG difference depending on where you get it. Next year I'll only be dealing with three farms(plus the dude in Thailand) and I'll know exactly what I'll be getting and where I'm getting it from!!! My father and I were talking today about next year. I know he's just as excited as I am!!
I have HUGE plans for the 2009 season!!!!!

(Zone 1)

The new season is gonna be here before we know it! I've already started making my list!

Woodway, TX(Zone 8a)

I just saw the results of an LSU study of caladiums for sun tolerance. (2007) Moonlight was recommended for shade only, and even then it got a 3 out of 5.

Bucyrus, OH(Zone 6a)

Does anyone know this variety off the top of your head?

Thanks much,

Well, you folks are going to corrupt me , because these beautiful caladiums will be a weakness for me. I have always admired them, but have never had many of them. My husband is going to kill me,because I have another project for him. MY NEW CALADIUM BED! I just couldn't get off this site. I am new to Dave's garden. I have one lonely little caladium, but not for long. I have been so inspired.
O.K. Bill, can they be planted now,or should I wait? I am in Eastern N.C. Should I start with one of your mixed packages? Should I start with containers? Instead of a greenthumb, I'm a greenhorn.
What do you think?

Put them in the ground now...about a month they'll be waving at ya!!

Lynda,

If you planted them now you'd have plants in 2-3 weeks

Bucyrus, OH(Zone 6a)

Thank you C4Less :)

Port Charlotte, FL(Zone 10a)

Welcome Lynda! That little lonely Caladium isn't going to be lonely for too long! hahaha

I was never a big Caladium fan until I came to Dave's Garden. Now, they're a huge staple of my Garden. I plant them everywhere and next year I've got bigger plans! They're so happy and very tolerant of the bad conditions we put them through. Heat, bad dirt, drought, wind, Sun...etc.

I poke them in pots that I grow annuals in. I know that when the annuals have given up, I'll still have my dependable gorgeous Caladiums to still provide me with gorgeous low-maintenance color in my garden.

I actually kind of feel bad sometimes. I have a lot of high maintenance plants in my garden...and these little darlings just do so much and really ask for nothing. Do I Love Caladiums? Naaaaaaahhhhhhhhh! hehe

Like Bill said...Plant them now and they'll be up in 2-3 weeks and you'll still have a while to enjoy them.
