More Caladium Pictures

(Zone 1)

Oh my goodness Bill, it sounds like your Birthday ended up being a very stressful one.

So sorry to hear about your friend passing on your special day. From now on you will have to not only celebrate your birthday but the life of your dear friend as well. Remember the good, happy times you had together.

Glad your Mom is okay! That must have been scary! I bet she will never drive when she's tired or sleepy again. My prayers are with you and your family.

Just absolutely gorgeous Bill! Thank-you!

Bartlesville, OK(Zone 6a)

I am having a problem with one of my best ones. Picture #9 above (mine) is starting to collapse.

So I looked in at it and it is rotting. It is not in the sun and I don't water it anymore than the others. It seems to be draining OK.

I gave it a large dose of diluted h2o2 water today with super thrive in it. We'll see if that does any good. I am very unhappy because it was so very pretty.

I feel like a bad caladium mom. :(

9kitty...I went back and found #9 and yes it is very pretty. I don't know? I have so many caladiums planted around here because I really love them. They all grow diifferent though. Sounds like you're doing everything you can and it's too early to change the letters 9k to Sh in your name!

(Zone 1)

Bill, those Caladium's are awesome ... now I've added a few more to my want list ... Moonlight, Blizzard, Starburst, Torchy.

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

they are all great. Is it just me or are white caladiums particularly pretty this year?

Port Charlotte, FL(Zone 10a)

I think the white ones look outstanding too Vossner! Here's an updated photo of my Lizard Lounge Container Caladiums! I just went around poking a couple into a few pots here and there!

KatG, that is a Beautiful lounge area and the Caladiums really look great! Looks like a photo out of a magazine. Really Nice!

Garner, NC(Zone 7b)

Wow!! Ok, Bill and Kat...I finally caught up to you, lol! I'm virtually breathless with all these beautiful and inspiring pics from all of you:-) There's gonna be a biggggg list of must haves next season. I knew this would happen!

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

you know what's becoming a BIG problem for me? when caladiums go dormant (I have taken the calculated risk of not lifting), then it gives the appearance that I have "space". Then, when I go planting new ones in the so-called "space", I am invariably cutting corms with the shovel. ugh! I hate that.

I'm thinking that what I need to do is overplant something at the same time I plant caladiums, so that when they disappear, I have something going. But what could i plant? What would offer winter interest? what would not choke out the corms and keep them from coming up next season?

If anybody has comments/tips, especially Floridians who likely don't lift their bulbs, I would greatly appreciate it.

Port Charlotte, FL(Zone 10a)

Vossner...I know what you mean. I had the same problem when I was PLANTING my bulbs! hahaha. I put in so many and had a lot of pine bark on top so I had to scrape it away. Therefore to plant another bulb I had to recover the one I just planted and sometimes I'd forget where it was and dig it up again. I got smart though...started poking Small bamboo skewers in to mark them! Now maybe you could do that now beside each Caladium so you know where they are.

As far as other plants, I have Artillery fern in with mine. It doesn't choke out the caladiums and reseeds itself and spreads. It's not the fullest bed in the world after the Caladiums have expired, but it's something. With the pine bark it looks better than nothing.

It's the frilly green looking plant in front of the Caladiums in this photo.

Hi Bev! Aren't you glad you came to see! These Caladiums can be addictive you know!

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

I googled artillery fern and it seems it will die back in my area. BUT, we do have some well behaved evergreen ferns that I could use. KathyG that was a very good tip, thanks.

your pic in the PF looks amazing. Also, when I googled, I found there is a variegated artillery fern. Hurry, go get it! lol

Garner, NC(Zone 7b)

Uh, yeah Kat...I THINK so, lol! ...calculating how many bulbs I'll need to purchase to have some of every kind I now desperately need... I do love your containers and want to come down to help y'all 'weed' by the pool;)

@ the nursery, I didn't check for labels. They are interesting, but, not all the attractive to me.

The bottom one in the square shaped pot is different. It's a Thai I've never seen.

Here's a link to a grower in Thailand I may do business with next year.
The guy has some interesting varieties. that's for sure!! The page is slow to load but it's worth the wait.

Moonlight , Aaron and Blizzard would make an absolutely stunning combination! Are either of the other two, sun tolerant, besides the Aaron?

Woodway, TX(Zone 8a)

I have been warned that Moonlight prefers total shade. It's a shame, because I'm fascinated w/it.

Toadsuck, TX(Zone 7a)

That's what I was figuring...it is an outstanding Caladium!

Lake Placid, FL(Zone 9b)

eyes,

That would be an awesome combo!! I have a nice container of each. I'll put them all together tomorrow and get a picture. My Blizzard only gets morning sun and the containers of Moonlight I have are all placed in shaded locations.
There is a Memorial not to far from my house where a State Trooper was shot and killed a few years ago. They planted Moonlight all over the place and it's getting allot of sun. When you drive by it, it looks beautiful. You're doing about 65 mph when you go by so the view is quick to say the least. One of these days I'll stop and walk up and check the plants out to see how they look. You would think they'd have a tendency to burn in to much sun but that's not always the case.
The Moonlight was bred for growing in containers. I was in my backyard the other day just as the sun was just going down. The Moonlight almost lights up the area around it.

The Blizzard is another new one that was bred for containers. It's been available for only a couple of years.
I like it more and more every time I look at it.

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

I found a potted Moonlight at a local nursery this spring. it is stunning in real life but it definitely needs to be in the shade. A patch of Moonlight must be absolutely awesome. I dunno, the whites have been simply fabulous this year, simply fabulous.

Bill, of those thais shown in the link, that ones that look interesting to me are the ones with rounded leaves. really different looking.

Toadsuck, TX(Zone 7a)

So, you're saying Bill, that Moonlight can take some sun, then...and Blizzard part sun...Sounds like a winner to me.....know what I'm ordering next year. Thanks for the info! I"eyes" wanna see the pic of them together when you get it done.

Lake Placid, FL(Zone 9b)

eyes,

Driving by the Memorial at 65 mph the Moonlight looks nice. I would like to see it up close though to see if the leaves show any signs of burning before I said yes, they'll take sun.
I do know for sure that they'll do the best in a semi-shaded to shaded location.

Bill, my Moonlight looks like this:
http://www.brentandbeckysbulbs.com/summer/productview/?sku=60-41

that doesn't look like the one you just posted. Or do you think it just looks different because yours is a closeup.

In any case. the one I have will burn to a crisp with a day of full sun, I wish it didn't

nery,

It's because my pic is a close-up. It has a real thin green border and even thinner green veins in the leaf. The veins are "real" thin. Did you get yours from B&B?
B&B gets there bulbs from down here. A couple of the farms I deal with sell to them.
I will have the Moonlight next year.
Here's another pic. I took about a dozen pics of the Moonlight alone.
There is 1 or 2 June Bride bulbs in this container along with the Moonlight. You can see some of the leaves.

B, I bought my moonlight at a local nursery as a potted plant. I am excited to know you'll have them next year. I'll be first in line, lol

Looked it up and this was what I found...

"Landscape performance of cultivars was compared in side-side comparisons of plants grown under full-sun conditions in 1996, 1998, and 1999 (Table 3) on the same plots used for evaluating tuber production. Plant height, number of leaves, and foliar characteristics were recorded approximately 7 months after planting. ‘Florida Moonlight’ displayed more landscape vigor than ‘June bride’ by producing taller plants with a greater number of leaves. Leaf size of ‘Florida Moonlight’ and ‘June bride’ was similar though slightly narrower for ‘June bride’."

Gorgeous photo's again and I'm loving the white Caladiums. They're awesome! Your new camera does good Bill! :)

Here's a photo of my Galaxy foundation planting. I cannot believe how much it adds to these other plants. They've gone gangbusters and they really do hold up in the extreme hot afternoon sun in this location.
