I agree about morning watering but often I find I have to plant something and digging in wet soil is more of a problem for me than the time I water.
Florida gardening is only for the few brave souls that can face that kind of above 90% humidity for 8 months and endless heat. I'll take the northeast anytime! "Evacuation" is much more of a curse word than "snow".
Scattelogical ramblings and desultory humor - Frostfree?
And to follow up on the night water - in the summer many, if not most storms are in the late afternoon and evening. The heat builds up all day and triggers late day t-storms.
I agree with you Pirl about the weather. It is not pleasant and I would take the snow anytime If I could afford to pay for heat.
My gas bill (heater) is never more than $60/month and this month it was $3.00.
90 degrees projected for today, humidity 80% +
Ugh! I'm sure the electric bill is a tad higher, Gloria.
Re: night watering
I'm still willing to bet it could be more like another "old wive's tale" like another recent one on DG.

My daughter has moved back north from Tampa where she has lived for 8 years.
She is ajunct faculty and there were no classes fot the next semester and the job climate there wasn't looking better for quite some time.
She said she missed home so back she came.
Yes. Its about 75$ per month in summer. I only have the ac in the room where Im at. Not typical, but it is possible to live cheap. My service to the greenhouses is $10 per month.
I miss the colors in the fall. And I miss snow. Don't miss any people though.
That's unfortunate. Where did you live, Gloria?
Near Traverse City, Michigan - about 30 miles into the country. Basically grew up in the woods. My sister says I was a feral child.
Northern Michigan is a great place.
Spent a week on Beaver Island every year for 30.
What a beautiful place until the super rich found it,spoiled it.
Even the Native American won't live there anymore.
Funny! Feral Gloria! Maybe we're just friendlier in the northeast though, throughout our travels, I feel everywhere we've been there have been friendly people.
If your a gardner you live a life less threatened, don't you think?
Feral Gloria, Sounds like you march to your own drummer.
Where is Beaver Island.
My grandmother's place was on the bay in Traverse City. Someone said that place would be worth millions now. Her back yard was quite small, but it was right on the bay. You could go out and watch the sail boats and the tide came up in her yard.
It was a little Victorian house, I think it had 3 stories.
Yes. I have been in the rat race. Its not for me. I like a quiet spot in the country. This little town has about 3500 people. I would rather be further out, but its not safe.
Beaver Island is up north between Charlevoix and Petosky.
We could stand on the east shore and barely see the Mackanack Bridge.
Your friend was right. Property on the shoreline would be very pricey.
Petosky was the first land fall port for big pleasuer cruisers comming through the great lakes, then down the west shore to Charlevoix (where jean Benet Ramsey spent her summers) then further down the wast shore to Traverse City, it must have been developed duering the huge Sturgeon fishing boom begining mid 1800's and early 1900's, still is the biggedt town on the west side of the state.
Dot Com millionaires have moved in ,built million dollar summerhomes wherever they pleased and ruined the small towns up the coast. Beaver Island was taken over by the family who ownes Lands End, spoiled it's quaint wild atmosphere.
Yes. That would be up in the country where I grew up. We played Charlevoix and Petosky in Basketball. I was on the debate team and I think we debated Petosky.
Do you agree or disagree with World Trade?
After I left home an MD built a country home back of our property.
It was such an intrusion! We never paid any attention to property lines before he got there. The woods was ours! Our property was adjacent to a Federal Reserve, so naturally we thought that was ours too!
I would like to be a fly on the wall when the outsiders with money and ego, meet the locals over where the boundrys are.Corperate people are too uptight and territirial when it comes to "their view of the lake"
I probably mentioned this befor in another thread but the island was once the domaine of Irish barrel makers and Mormens, there were rustic cabin ruins and great overgrown apple orchards the Mormens planted. Wonderful walks throught the quietest woods of Aspen and Birch, we looked forward to our week on the island with friends, came one year and the whole birch forrest as bulldozed down so Mr. Lands End could build a huge cottage on the west shore.
We used to see deer on the runway where the single prop plane would land, Mr. Lands End gave the town millions to extend the runway and build a fence. It wasn't long befor we just stopped going, the simple beauty of the natueral world there was dissapearing and "Walt Disneyish" landscaping was moving in.
Your spot is beautiful. I feel the way you do, have always been a bit of a loner and loved to hike, canoe and fish, would be just as happy in a cabin in the woods as anywhere.
Risky now days.
I tried to send a Tiff file of the beaches we used to walk on but now are private with big Mc Cottages on them.
The photo is of the High Roll Way, which is on the Federal reserve behind our place. It was an Indian overlook on the Manistee River.
Our place is about 300 acres in front of the federal reserve, which is several thousand acres. Now our property is all divided up amongst brothers and grandchildren - so its not the same as when I had it all to myself.
I have 5 brothers, but they rarely hung out where I was at, so I usually did have it all to my self. My preference!
You know how dumb boys are!
Gloria....I have 6 brothers and I do know!!
No wonder you are a loner also!
I should say, present company excepted. I know there are some men in this forum who would never ever be rude to their sisters.
A while back we had a conversation about a decoration for my house. I think it was Celeste (I could be wrong) who suggested a cast iron cat above the front door. I ended up buying an old cast iron tiller blade on eBay and it ended up being painted with hammered copper color rustoleum and here it is hanging on the front of my house. I really like it - goes nicely with the poppies, too!
Very nice, Cat!
So nice, Cat. It's perfect and fits right on.
Love your curb appeal design!
Cat, that looks really nice!
Gloria - that's a gorgeous back yard!
That looks SOOOOO Good Yank!! Hey..are those Poppies in bloom?? Beautiful!
I second both of those emotions!
Well now the poppies are getting sun from two directions!
Lovely. It does look like the sun!
Lovely backyard Gloria, and Yankee cat nice front, keep up the good work
Sorry I do not answer much to the northeast thread, but I know what is going on guys, don't forget about me, love you all! C
Clem ...
We care deeply about you, too. Just post when you can, OK?
Thank you Candyce! I love to go around different forums, I love the cacti, brugs, daturas etc., You guys seem to have such a nice relationship, I will try to post more often. Clem
Cat, I like it, we used to have a cute little cape code too.
Gloria-LOVE your backyard.
i am curious about the other mysterious "old wives' tale" on DG...
i water in the late afternoons. i am not a morning person, and i doubt i ever will be.
It's early but I think it had to do with weather, Amy.
I think if you water later just be careful not to get the foliage wet. That's how I've always done.
Clem - I miss your posts. Come back soon!
Louise
