labs are so smart. Once at work (archeological survey) we got a boat to do surveys up and down the Warrior river. The guy who had the boat had a black lab. Said she was the Heater. she sure was.

That's what emmagreyhound does. she grabs my pants in the seat and ankle when I turn around. So many little bites out of my clothes. I don't know why she does that! I think she likes me.

Maypop. that bathroom floor must be huge to spend 12 hours on it!

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

either that, or the tiles are teeny.

Cleveland,GA/Atlanta, GA(Zone 7b)

2x2 mosaic in two colors. I decided to lay out a pattern with a double border edge. Half the tile as saved from old construction and half was special ordered. The challenge was not having 20 percent overage to waste like the pros. 7 1/2 hours were spent trying to come up with a pattern I could live with.

Any tips for getting up tile without breaking it?

The scammer pasted down tiles on half the upstairs bathroom floor and left 3/4 inch spaces between the tiles.

Latrine style. Not what I wanted in my 100 year old house!

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

Do we get the pleasure of pictures Laurel?

Gloria, your scammer stories are breaking my heart! So sorry. Wish I could come and fix it for you.

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

If you can spare a square, please terra me off a couple.........

Laurel, Chile, is this tiling some sort of punishment or is it therapy for the chimmly incident??? Please DO show us some pics! Sounds like you are quite the little homemaker! LOL

How about this embarrassing scenario.....I'm up in the garden, shirt completely dirty and unmatched to my pants, with white little socks that I had been wearing with my muck boots, but had just put back on my "reg'lar" shoes over the fruity-looking little white socks; I had the dirtiest fingernails on the planet from planting many things, dirt on my face and totally unkempt hair, when up walks my DH and my DH's childhood girlfriend from his teenage years here on the farm, with her husband, son & son's fiance. Oh My! I'm sure he wanted to introduce me as the hired hand, but thankfully, they were all delightful and very much into gardens, so I made them tea (after I washed my hands!) and we had a wonderful afternoon visiting in my family room with the carpet all dirty from me tracking in and out. He hadn't seen her in almost 50 years......we all had a fun time. While the kettle was heating, I took off the white socks and put on a matching sweater out of sheer embarrassment. LOL

being scammed is life invasive. For 4 months these people - man & wife- pretended to be my friends. Started on job after another, turned everything up side down, shut off all electricity (except 3 outlets) all outside water -- all the outside underground water systems I had just installed, tore off shingles from the roof so that my house was flooded.
Never finished one job. You keep paying them on the promises that they are going to finish the work.

that was in 2004. Im still trying to get it resolved.

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

That's just horrible, Gloria. Good luck! Eventually, the tables will turn on them......what goes around, comes around in life.

Cleveland,GA/Atlanta, GA(Zone 7b)

Oh Gloria, so sorry to hear about your terra bull experiences (really). I hope you can eventually get things fixed up, but no, I don't know a way to remove tile intact. That's assuming it was put down correctly. Sounds like this guy might have used Elmer's glue.

We had old linoleum and a rotten floor near the tub. We tore out the ceiling and exposed the rafters, decked the roof in cedar tongue and grove and put in a simple warehouse light. DH rewired and installed new faucets and the hand held. It's still in progress. I'm going to put the old vanity on legs (after refinishing) to give it a washstand look and color wash some beaded pine for the walls. I fell through the bathroom floor on the main floor when we bought the place. Guess that's what you get for buying a bargain from the bank.

Louise, your gardening when the old GF showed up is a wonderful story. Sounds like a great afternoon. Now don't make fun of me here, but I love to tile, iron, and split wood. Love to grow things to eat and cook best of all.

So Harper, here's a couple of photos. The bath is five feet half way down and then bumps in for a potty nook. Need to wait three days for the mastic to cure and then it can be grouted.

Here's another. I killed the borders at the washstand and in the nook where the toilet will go. You can't see that part, but I wanted to show the new shower surround and window. The wall is still unfinished. Of course new paint and color will follow.

I love the tile. Yes I love to tile also, and i had planned to tile the upstairs bathroom floor. I was so dissappointed when the guy just took my tiles and started sticking them down.

I also love the idea of the tongue-and-groove cedar ceilings. I am tearing out the drywall in the downstairs bathroom ceilings and putting bead board of some kind there.

Didn't know tongue and groove was still available.

My upstairs ceilings in my house are beadboard. Still trying to get the wallpaper off them, but will leave them plain if I ever get them stripped!

Cleveland,GA/Atlanta, GA(Zone 7b)

I said cedar, but I meant fir. Been buying new decking, so I have cedar on the brain.

Can I join in with my 2 cents worth? I love the tile and the pattern you put down! Such a soft color/ Lots of hard work, but you know the old sayin', if you want it done right.............

It looks great!

Cleveland,GA/Atlanta, GA(Zone 7b)

Thanks Audrey and Amy. It's not what's "in", but Maypop is a rustic, country A-frame. Had the white left over and the other color is called "maize". Perfect for a country veggie gardener? I did the guest bath in Atlanta will tumbled travertine and Italian tile. It's the fanciest work I've done. Found an old oak buffet and sunk an octagonal sink with a hand cast bronze faucet set. Looks great. I'm taking it with me when we move (maybe to my grave).

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Very impressive, Laurel. That looks just great. I love the colors you are using. I would Never poke fun at you for liking to do the things you mentioned. I would like tiling too if I were good at it. I'm not! But I have always loved home stuff and fix-up projects, so I'd be poking fun at myself just as much. I also LOVE growing and cooking my own food. Maypop sounds very charming!

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

I agree. Very nice. I love the colors. That maize goes perfectly. I like the border too!

I want to tile my kitchen countertop and backsplash, but I keep procrastinating. Don't know what's holding me back... just fear, I guess.

Hey Louise, I can't help but think of your wonderful tavera pots. I'll bet you'd be great at tiling.

Gloria, I hope your house gets back to normal somehow. I hope you get your money back too!

Y'know that would make one kickin' headstone! All the grave gardeners can wash up at your plot!

lol - good one.

Sofonisba. When you go to court, you can get what you can "prove".
I have cancelled checks and photographs of the damage. But, the assistant DA said I can't "prove" that they destroyed my roof and stole Navaho jewelry. No one else had the opportunity. That is not "proof".

legal proof is not the same as logic or common sense.

You should wear a tape recorder when you interview a contractor who will work on your house. Have a check list and go down the list.

Jersey Shore, NJ(Zone 7a)

Gloria, I feel your pain! In the last four years I had one that did schlock work and did not finish what he was paid for, I had another one that just took off with the moolah after doing a smidgen of the work and I had one that did the work, in the specified time frame and did great work! He did the fireplace after 2 years of looking at 2 x 4s that should have been finished by the original contractor.1 out of three is NOT acceptable.
