Louise, I am always around, thanks for inviting me back. I will be very busy these days, brother in law came to visit from Spain (10 days) so that means less housework, less plant work, but I still need to make a living by going to work everynow and then. Tonight, brother in law is bonding with is brother, so I am here in the computer. Thanks for your nice thoughts. Clem
I am posting a pic of my future blooming prickley cactus, native to Long Island
Scattelogical ramblings and desultory humor - Frostfree?
Nice cactus, Clem! Yellow flowers? I have one with pink flowers. Bloomed for the first time last year but did not look good after the winter. I'll see what happens.
Cat, I love your tiller and front yard!!!
Great looking cacti Clem.
Thank you.
Thank you guys! These cacti look dead in the winter and so dried up. Once spring starts and you start to water it, it fills up with water and starts to grow. It is so fun much watching it grow, I got a cutting of this cactus when I went to visit a college several years ago, it did not bloom until the third year. Now it is full with buds, will try to post another pic as it gets close to open up. This one is yellow and the blooms look like roses, then it gives you the eatable fruit, prickley pear! Clemen
Interesting. I wonder if this prickly pear is different from the prickly pear cacti out in Arizona?
Candyce, I've seen this one in the nurseries around here and they say it is native to Long Island, who knows....C

Here's the USDA distribution map of opuntia spp. in the USA.
O. humefusa is native to the eastern United States.
Thanks for the info Gloria!
You are welcome. Those cactus "figs" are full of nutrients, too. So are the leaves.
Notice that map does not include Maine...figures!!
I didn't notice that.
Im used to it Gloria......lots of things don't like our Maine winters, Me included!! LOL
My pink ones get the fruits as well.

Maine might be cold but you have delicious lobsters! Clem
It was 94 in Atlanta today. I'll point the fan your way. This is not normal at all!
L
94 here also. the dogs had to come in at noon. they were too hot.
the rabbit got two frozen plastic bottles today so he could get between them. When I put the frozen bottle in his cage, he is right there to put his head on the ice.
He would rather be in Maine.
What's he reading?
Watership Down.
Thought Beatrix Potter.
Oh Gloria, Troy looks like a charmer. I've never heard of cooling a rabbit down. Our four dogs loved the ride to Maypop in the air conditioning. Now they have to be hot dogs in the yard. I guess you will swelter with me. These temps are supposed to hold for the rest of the week. I'm going to go cut some grass now that it's cooling down a mite. BTW, I'm sure this will do in the lettuce and all the cool flowers.
L
Troy is beautiful and we'd love to have him here in Maine!
Beatrix Potter has mice in her teacups. Yuk. I hope she never invites me to tea.
Schick: Running fans in your directions as Maypop suggests:
Whoosh: Its too hot in Alabama.
Troy is beautiful, keep him cool.
We are going for 90 over the weekend, always hard to ajust to that much heat so soon.
Troy is adorable and looks so cuddly. He takes me back to the days when I was a kid and my dad wanted to raise rabbits. He got two, and we kids turned them into our best friends!
I can remember the sultry hot of Alabama and Georgia all too well!! Very uncomfortable! And you say that we will be getting the same kind of wet heat this weekend? Oy!!
Troy is adorable but he'll eat all of my plants if he comes here! Rainy and cloudy! Yeaks. Clem
I didn't mean to mislead anybody. Troy looks exactly like my New Zealand, Henri.
But Henri is 12 years old, I do not have a photo of him.
Troy is from AllPosters.com. they do not cite the photographer.

Thats OK...I didn't think you had trained your rabbit to wear glasses! LOL
With all the carrots they eat, rabbits shouldn't ever need glasses.
Only when reading. My rabbit likes black sunflower seeds and carrots, in addition to his regular alfalfa pellets and timothy hay.
My black lab likes sunflower seeds, much to the birds dismay! LOL
they would be good for his coat. He must be sleek and shiny.
She is very shiny and soft, but her name tells another tale "Terra" as in wholey terra.
dont know wholey terra
does that translate, "holy terror"???
My roscoe is like a huge fluffy duster - part chow, part mutt.
YES Gloria..you got it!!
LOL at myself!! What was I thinking?? Maybe she's the whole terror package on 4-legs!
Terra gotta be a good garden dog...
