DAILY PICS VOL. 107

Georgetown, SC(Zone 8a)

Good morning! We came from here...
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/845691/

Post your daily sightings of your favorite feathered pals!

I'm borrowing CMoxon's baby Robins from the last thread, as I'm not at my home computer.

Great job on the last thread everyone!

Debin, Thanks so much for starting the new thread!

Last evening I had time to catch up by looking at all of the posts I had missed on the last "many" threads. Absolutely fantastic pictures. So many different birds!
Love this forum.

Nanny, great shot of the Robin with the worm.

Saw a new bird yesterday!
Thought the yellow of a female baltimore oriole looked funny, so I got up the binocs and it sure wasn't an oriole.
Called DH and got out the bird book. I found the bird and DH agreed, it was an Eastern Crested Flycatcher. It was a great sighting.
Very unique looking bird.

It seemed to be cking out a hole in a nearby tree, so we are hoping to see it more.
Maybe next time I will be able to think enough to get a picture!

Thanks to you folks mentioning your "gourmet" suet on the other thread (Cherry Crunch, I believe), I placed an order last night for an 18 pack variety case from Nottawa Wild Bird Supply :-)

Includes 2 of each of the following:
Apple Snack
Blueberry Twist
Cherry Crunch
Nuts & Berry
Peanut Blend
Sunflower Blend
Wild Bird Blend
Woodpecker Blend
Zesty Orange

My feathered friends will be gourmet snacking later on this week, I got shipping confirmation today :-) These also have calcium in them, which they say is good for egg laying females. It was only $23.99, free shipping, so @ 1.33 per cake, only a few cents more expensive than what I've been buying around here.

Thanks for starting the new thread Deb ;-)
Cute photo Adel, I like all the bird shadows the shot shows. I can't get a clear flight photo with my Nikon and look how many you got in one shot!
Congratulations on the new sighting cpartschick. I hope you do see your tweet again.

I don't have a picture but I had a wonderful time watering my plants early this morning. I saw something I had only heard about before. A hummingbird decided to bathe in the edges of the steam from the hose. I had it going pretty strong and the hummer kept flying right up to the edges; then for the really cool part - it landed on the wet large leaves of a Datura plant and took a bath. Gosh, it just made my whole day to see that hummer take a bath.

Thanks for the new thread Deb!

I have tired 2 different brands of the apple suet and ended up through it away both times. I had no takers at all. Let us know what eats it, sadie.

Not a great flight shot of a Baltimore Oriole, but here it is anyway! lol

Nanny ~ the only thing I can imagine eating the apple may be the Mocking Birds, I keep apples out for them and they love them. LOL, mine might end up like yours though, in the trash :-|

Very nice pics nanny!

Just got home and found this scene under my pear tree, which - it just so happens - is next to the feeders.
These guys seem to think they live here. :)

Nanny, that is a great shot.
Oh, and the bird I saw was a Great Crested Flycatcher. I typed it wrong the first time.

Whiteside County, IL(Zone 5a)

Ha Deb! just plopped right down there!

Georgetown, SC(Zone 8a)

Cparts: I'd love to see a Flycatcher. Never have.

I saw a bird today I'd never seen before and it scooted so quick, I couldn't even turn on the camera. I'm wondering if it sounds familiar to anyone - just to give me a starting place to search. It was a little smaller than a mockingbird, buttery yellow underneath, buff-colored on the back, but the head distinctly darker brown. Warbler?

I have no idea. When I see a new bird, I try to pick out things to help me identify, like size, shape, coloring, beak shape and color etc.
If I can, I even write everything I can down before I grab the book. This helps quite a bit.

I saw a brown thrasher about a month ago, and wrote down everything I saw. When I found it in the book, it was almost word for word of the discription. I knew I had the right bird, right down to "thrashing in the leaves" ha.

By the way, enjoyed your picture. We posted at the same time. Hope you find out what your bird is.

Marlton, NJ

Debin, What if you go to Whatbird.com and type in as much as you remember including area and see what comes up. Its worth a shot. :-)

I've been lurking and enjoying all of these threads. You all have such gorgeous birds that I never see around here. I love the Baltimore Orioles and well, I could sit here all day naming them off...

Yesterday afternoon hubby and I were driving around looking at houses. We passed a rather wooded area and there was a little bird flitting around. I said, that's a nuthatch. He looked at me strangely and asked me how I knew that. I grinned smugly and said Dave's!

I had the blinds open in my bedroom this afternoon and spotted this red headed woodpecker. I slowly inched my way out of the room and got the camera. Of course, he was gone by the time I returned. I sat on the bed and sure enough, he came back. This is the closest I've gotten to one of these beauties.

Sadie Mae, Nottawa is where I purchase all of my suet. That is where I got the Cherry Crunch. I just bought a carton of mixed flavors, but guess I had better re-order some more, a carton of Cherry Crunch. The birds all love it.

They are a fantastic company to purchase from. Good luck with the Cherry Crunch. I have to replenish my Cherry Crunch cakes twice as often as I do the others, which are peanut, orange, and blueberry.

Janet: Jackpot! Great group of shots you got of your red-headed pal.
Pelle: I forgot about "whatbird". I'll try that. Thanks.
Deb

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

Janet - love your red-headed wp shots - what software are you using to get all your photos together like that? It looks super!

Here's a goldfinch that keeps peering into my kitchen when I am seated at the table! How strange! Maybe he wants me to go outside?

Thumbnail by DrDoolotz
Beaumont, TX(Zone 8b)

Thanks Deb. I thought so too. I think I'll leave those blinds open more often. When I've been outside taking the photos, I have to stand about 20 ft. away just to not be seen.

Thanks Claire. I was very pleased with the way the collage turned out. I'm using a freebie program called Photofiltre available from www.photofiltre.com . It works as well as Paint Shop Pro (with the exception of not being able to work in "layers"). The Studio Version has layers, but the trial version only lasted 30 days. I'm a cheap gal and have gotten used to not having layers and just continue to use the free regular version. My Mom told me about this program several years ago and I've found that it does everything I need it to. There are even add ons that you can use with it available on that same site. It comes in many languages as well.

Here's a nice cardinal that showed up today also.

Love that redheaded woodpecker! I haven't seen one in about a year. Nice cardinal shot too.

I really miss the goldfinches!

I haven't seen anything unusual in DAYS. Of course, I've been making a lot of noise outside and scaring everything away. This morning though I saw this fellow while drinking my coffee. I had a terrible time setting down my coffee and picking up my camera without looking away from the bird. Clearly, I'm already out of practice. He was way above me before I could take a shot. Only got two pics and this is the only one where you can see anything at all. Cropped the heck out of it. Hope it's not too blurry.

Just a belly shot but I'm darn excited to have something new around. I think this might be the Magnolia Warbler that Resin identified for me last week.

Outstanding shots! Janet! They are such a handsome woodpecker!

Claire, Thats too funny about the Goldfinch!

Elphaba that reminds me of him too!

So many nice pictures here.
Did another Marshland trip and met this American Bittern doing his contortions for their distinctive sound.
Always makes me grin hearing their "calls" since I always imagine somebody trying to unclog a toilet out in the marshlands :)

Indeed Burn - she looks very annoyed indeed! And with such a lovely feeder, I would have thought she'd be delighted. Grumpy bird - maybe she's being courted by far too many males. That's enough to make anyone annoyed! LOL!

Here is a picture of a female red winged black bird.
