What's Blooming Outside Your Door, Part 2

Union, WA(Zone 8b)

You all have the most beautiful Iris I've ever seen. I only have five colors and they are the old standards.

Buckeye, AZ(Zone 9a)

Thanks Willowwind, those old standards are the best! They usually withstand the weather and smell better than any of the hybrids!

Shokami....Love the dark one, I noticed my Night Ruler bloomed today (a dark purple too) but I never made it outside with the camera. I only went out when the little dog to do her business (she can't go up and down stairs...lol). I had a hairdo today midday and that screws up the whole day...I hate midday appts.

Dallas, OR(Zone 8a)

cocojuno..I will need to do research on all my BI's as the tags have all been misplaced.(the garden faries!) I will need to pull my old reciepts & catalogs and put names to these iris's. They all come from either Schieners or Cooleys here in Oregon. Both companies have beautiful selection. Cooleys is here in Silverton about 3 miles from my home. I want to go take pic's of the fields & sales garden this weekend if possible.

Dallas, OR(Zone 8a)

tilly congrats on your bud finally blooming. The color is so pretty. Hope you post again in all of it's glory!
This guy will need to relocate. He is kinda getting smushed by the
iron arbor. :(

oh I agree, these iris pictures are wonderful! I too have only standard bearded iris right now, but ordered lots from co-ops so maybe next spring?! LOL! I cant wait!

Bea, I love the picture of all your field of iris in your yard! That is so gorgeous! Thansk for sharing.

Bea don't go to any trouble, I just thought if you knew I would look for one. It is a nice color combo! I seem to really like the dual color Iris best.

Dallas, OR(Zone 8a)

I want to get these Iris's identified Cocoajuno. It won't be today as I have a new order of daylilies to plants, but soon I hope. When folks like a certain flower in my garden , I love to share the name. It is frustrating when the tag is gone. I have to many of everthing to remember...
my project for today. :)

Seems like we have mutual love of all flowers I love daylilies, I have 200+ cultivars of daylilies and it is my 1st year growing seeds.... Looks like you received some good roots!

Coos Bay, OR(Zone 8a)

bea... what a beautiful blue iris! stunning color.

Port Angeles, WA(Zone 8b)

And Jean Marie, finishing up. This is the one I didn't think would bloom this year!

And with as much leaf growth as my Endless Summers are experiencing, I thought maybe blooms would be lacking, but nope. They're budding nicely!

And now, the million dollar question. I got a bag of Aquilegia 'McKana's Giant' from Costco or Home Depot or somewhere like that...bag of 30. Stuck them all in the ground and they all grew. So here's the strange part. Many of them are blooming now. The ones on the west side of the path look 'normal,' like this.

Port Angeles, WA(Zone 8b)

And this...

Port Angeles, WA(Zone 8b)

But the ones on the east side of the path all appear to be looking like this...

So being a newbie to all of this, my question is, um...why? Why are all of the ones on the east side looking like this...like clover flowers and all those on the west side of the path looking like columbine?

Just a different kind of columbine. Hmmm. Maybe Nora Barlow?

Well, not quite. But it looks like maybe you didn't get all McKenna Giants. The leaf is the same, no?

And the delicate looking laurentia ~

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

Yes, I think it looks like Nora Barlow. I know many gardeners don't like it, but it's one of my favorites . . .

Things are sure hoppin' at your place!!

Port Angeles, WA(Zone 8b)

Yep, Kathy, I think you're right. They were all in the same bag, labeled at McKana's Giant. Check yours because they came from the same bunch. It will be interesting to see how many of each ended up on each side. So far, it's McKana on the left and Nora on the right! Very strange!

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

Definitely enough to throw you for a loop. It'll be very weird if they continue that pattern. Did you plant one side first and then the other? Maybe the Nora Barlows got put in either the top or the bottom of the bag. Mine hasn't bloomed yet, but I'll be excited to see it either way.

Port Angeles, WA(Zone 8b)

Yeah, as a matter of fact, I did plant it that way. But I don't remember which I planted first. I think the east side, which would be the Nora side. It looks like it's continuing the same pattern as the ones budding on both sides appear similar to each other. May have to mix them up a bit after they're established.

Buckeye, AZ(Zone 9a)

Outta, Your gardens look great, isn't it exciting to see things just sprouting all over the place!

Here is another Iris 'Night Ruler'

My new and strange plant, only a flower...no leaves, I just love the red, it is the best red I have seen in a flower.

It is Sprekelia formosissima, Aztec Lily

Sheri - you have discovered Columbine, which will continue to be a source of amusement.
Yes - Nora Barlow with a twist, perhaps. And next year she might be sporting plums, purples, gentian blues, violets - i even have a green one! I never know & was totally surprised a couple years back with a blue & white variation. Enjoy. The mckanas are great in size & form, but Nora will never let you down.
