Blooming in May

:-> LOL

My tabacco is flowering. Just noticed it by the smell. LOL. Last year I just didn't get enough water or something and I got very few flowers. Planted it because it was supposed to to be very fragrant at night. It wasn't and I thought it was an annual. Apparently mine is a perenial and is actually fragrant at night.

Surprise surprise. Battery is dead in the camera right now so no pictures for now.

Nice pictures, y'all. Here a few of mine (all taken today).

Rose 'New Dawn' with a baby green lynx spider.

Clematis 'Prince Charles'. This is my favorite - very tough, not bothered by hot, humid summers, and will rebloom several times. Last spring it was about twice this big but it had a bit of a setback from last summer's drought ... but still pretty nice.

Oenothera speciosa - good points: pretty flowers, blooms for a long time. Bad points - it will take over your entire yard unless you're very diligent about pulling it out.

View of part of the back yard. Some of the Aquilegia chrysantha is flopping over but usually it behaves. The light blue clematis is 'Will Goodwin' - very short now as last year it was mauled by rabbits (this happens to most of my clematis which is why I've given up on trying to grow them). I will need to rip out a lot of the extra O. speciosa when it's done blooming. There used to be Siberian iris ... but last winter they were anhilated by some sort of critter that ate the rhizomes - maybe voles.

Nice pics all of them...

The alyogyne is really cool, Kara!

rednyr - I have cats but they have to stay indoors (no unrestrained outdoor pets allowed in Raleigh, plus they are both dumb as rocks and would end up as road pizza). But thanks for the offer :)

Tom, I may bite the bullet by July and try and take cuttings. it did so poorly last year I was ready to get rid of it...then it started to bud

For a short period each year this Orchid Cactus shows off, then the pot gets stuck behind some shrubbery so as not to be seen again for a year. It is such an ungainly plant but the huge flowers are showstoppers.

This is supposed to the Swamp Rose, Rosa Palustrus scandens, but I am not positive on that ID.. It doesn't look like the photos in PlantFiles so maybe it was mis-labeled.

By the way, those clematis are all fabulous. I love them but they are too needy in this climate.

I think this one is cool. Erythrina bidwilii, a hybrid of the native coral bean, E. herbecea.

Clematis Josephine is going nicely

Oh WOW! That one is to die for. I may have to try that one and see what happens.

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

ardesia, what is the hybrid erythrina like??

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

I have found it to be a somewhat unattrative deciduous tree/shrub except when it is blooming like now. The branches seem to grow all katty wampus and I am forever pruning off strays. Mine is about 6' tall and it is in an area that gets no irrigation. This one is just starting to flower and when it is in full bloom it is striking.

Another factoid - Although I have tried many. many times I have never been able to root this one. I even tried air layering by placing a low branch on the ground and holding it down with a brick for several months and no go. I am going to try air layering a higher branch with damp spaghnum and we shall see what happens then.

When are your finals?

Bluefield, VA(Zone 5b)

not this friday, but the one after it
PS this is Trent. i'm using my g-pa's computer cuz i'm hangin with them in shipyard (Hilton Head)...... just to clear up any potantial confusion

Diehrd: Your Siam Tulips showing anything yet? I got nothin' here...so far.

This acanthus should be in full bloom in a couple more days.

lussah beautiful pic! Gardenias, Jasmine and Honeysuckle...talk about a sweet world LOL

Orangeburg, SC(Zone 8a)

Yep and I have all three blooming right now!!!!!!!!!!!!! It don't get no-o-o better than that!!!! I am very sensitive to smells, especially sweet ones. But thank Heaven, those fragrances do not bother me at all. The only one I'm missing is magnolia. Oh, well, can't have it all.

This is Salvia leucantha... usually this blooms beautifully in September - October. But this year I am getting a few spring flowers too ... we didn't have many hard freezes in March and the part of the plant closest to the house managed to survive the last frost.

I kind of like that salvia. If that doesn't die back will it flower all summer? I'll go do myown homework.

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

Melissa, I am sensitive to heavy smells too but, like you, gardenias do not bother me at all. After seeing your beautiful flower I had to run outside and see if any of mine are open. Nothing yet but they are full of buds so soon hopefully......

Core, the S. leucantha blooms in the summer for me on a fairly regular basis but it's big show down here is in the fall.

Seabrook, SC(Zone 8b)

Anyone want to guess what this is?

It is.....
