Thank you very much.
Josephine.

Buffalo, TX(Zone 8b)

Great! Now after looking at photos of Texas betony and pics of S. Greggii, I don't know which I have. I can hardly wait for Josephine to get here. Help! LOL

I'll be so glad when I become proficient at plant ID. Of course with my eyes, that may not happen. They do so look the same to me.

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Charlene, the leaf of Betony is larger than that od salvia greggii, and the scent is quite different.

I've updated my list above for MamaJack (butterfly weed), Sweezel (bulbine) and DawninTx (bulbine).

Can I trade for the following?
Mamajack - do you have any putple bee balm?
Sweezel - do you have an Texas Betony?
DawninTx - do you still have a pink Pride of Barbados?

Thx,

McKinney, TX(Zone 8a)

Charlene he Texas Betony is floppy with heart shaped slightly fuzzy leaves and the long stems die back in the winer. Salvia Greggii is bushy, evergreen, with strappy, smooth leaves and woody stems.

I love Texas Betony. It is a great plant and the hummers love it even more than S. greggii and penstemon blooming right now. The picture below is mine yesterday (left side of the pic)

Lynne, the two offsets I already have potted up have been claimed by Josephine, but I am sure I can dig another one up. I buried a few stems about 4 weeks ago so they should be rooted by the swap time.

Buffalo, TX(Zone 8b)

I think I have the Betony. Now, I guess I need some S. Greggii. LOL

The stems on mine are hairy. I didn't notice the leaves being hairy, but they are kind of suffering from the shock of being moved right now. It is too late to go outside to look, but I do know the leaves are kind of heart shaped. Will they get bushy at all? They look kind of lonely just one stem each standing there all alone. Of course, I put them in a very mixed up bed (all except my daylilies are in very mixed up beds). They are right next to a mini rose with the exact same color of red as their blooms.

Should I search for more? Or will two fill the bill? I love hummers. I have seen two different kinds today.

Charlene

Buffalo, TX(Zone 8b)

Well It is Betony for certain. I found the following link here on our own DG's plant files. http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/130373/ Very good pic of the hairy stem and leaves. None of the pics in our plant files show it bushing out, but other pics do show it nice and full. Is that a time factor, or is it a care factor?

Charlene

Nevada, TX(Zone 8a)

Lynne, thank you for the bulbine. I have you down for Pink Pride of Barbados.

McKinney, TX(Zone 8a)

Sorry, I went out of town just after I posted that reply above. Here's the picture of mine. I did not realize that there was no whole plant picture in plant files. I am going to have to add one later.

I had the scare of a life time today...at one time or another I've promised euphorbia cuttings to some people. I know they're toxic. They can cause skin irritation. Some campers died using it as fire wood. These things were going though my mind as I put on a pair of gloves and started my cuttings today. I did my first cut and decided I needed my pots closer to where I was working. I decided to close my knife and set it aside. When doing so I used my thigh to close the knife blade...yep, stupid move! I poked myself in the thigh, just enough to make myself jump. Poison Control was extremely helpful and my outlook is good, I thought I was going to keel over and die.lol

Just wanted you to know there will be no Euphorbias from me ...I'm done messing with them for good.

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Lynea, I am glad you are O.K. have to be careful with sharp instruments.
Josephine.

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Hey everybody, I am going to add some more plants to my list, I put them here so they won't get lost in the shuffle. I will add them to my other list.
Sheila will you please add me to the main list menu? Thanks you sweet thing.

2 HACKBERRY TREES N GALLON POTS. Good for butterflies.

lynea, i think some people, like myself, are immune to those kinds of plants. does it have latex in the sap? i don't seem to be bothered by any of that kind of thing. the scariest thing i did in the garden was to take a kid to show them milkweed so they could see the plant that monarchs needed. well i broke off a piece and handed it to her so she could touch it. the next thing we know she is screaming that "it's burning. it's burning". she whelped up all over her hands almost instantly. that was the end of it but that day i became a believer that some people are highly allergic to those kinds of plants. also, had synadenium that i handled the same as any other plant. didn't bother me. does euphorbia have a different kind of sap or is it like these i mentioned?

McKinney, TX(Zone 8a)

Cocoa, wow, did you have a major reaction? I had no idea about the euphorbia toxicity. I am going to google it in a minute to learn more.

Josephine, can I get one of the american germander? That will be a good plant to add to the wild area by the creek.

Does anyone want any Verbena urticifolia (White vervain). I've let it grow and it has reseeded well in the wild area so I can dig some up. It is a native and this page says it's butterfly/catterpiller food source. Not for a formal garden though.

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Yes Stcey, you can have the Americam germander, and i would like some of the
White Verbena http://www.wildflower.org/plants/result.php?id_plant=VEUR
Josephine.

Well cocoa that answers my question I had for you about being in Tyler on a field trip to the skate plex today then ...2 Grande Saline buses were leaving as I pulled in with my group. Glad you are okay though

Hey! My youngest was in that group at the skateplex. He's worn out...means I don't have to read long at bed time.lol

I've had no reaction at all. Poison Control said a reaction could occur within 12 hours. If it was serious, I think it would have happened by now. The sap was really milky and runny, what I would associate with latex allergies. I'm not allergic to anything that I know of...but I also wear gloves all the time and don't push my luck touching "stuff". But leave it me to stick myself like a poison dart. LOL

I'm adding some nice and fairly safe:) gold and silver chrysanthemum to my list http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/992/

(Phyllis) Flint,, TX(Zone 7b)

Well see you should have driven over like others did then so we could have chatted a few minutes ....then you wouldn't have had the scare LOL

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Hello Charlene, will you please add my list to the main menu?
I though it was Sheila that put it up, but i realized it was you.
Thank you very much.
Josephine.

Buffalo, TX(Zone 8b)

Gotcha Josephine. Sorry, I didn't realize I had missed you.
Charlene

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

I have a lot going on right now and just now checked the thread, sorry Josephine. Glad Charlene got to you.

Seguin, TX(Zone 8b)

I'm adding to my list one mexican heather and one bougainvilla. The bougainvilla is in a clay pot and is potbound. I dug it up last fall and decided not to plant it again. I am tired of the thorns.

(Becky) Colmesneil, TX(Zone 8b)

Hello everyone... glad to see we are back together...lol

Cocoa... sooo glad you are alright!! I guess I am like mama.. and so far I am not allergic... but I remember I used to NOT be allergic to poison ivy... used to rip it out of trees with my bare hands... UNTIL !! OUCH is mild!! lol
And I would love some of the gold and silver... please!

Josephine ... do you know about a native groundcover that gets maybe 6" tall that has tiny orange flowers on it? I looked the natives and didn't find it... . don't have a good camera to take pics, but the camera is on my list to buy!
blue_eyes.. I would love the beauganvilla if no one else wants it.

I am adding :

4---- Crepe Myrtles plants ... old ( 50 yrs +) variety.. kinda medium pink with white... very pretty, and sends sucker plants
4 --- Wood ferns plants ( natives).. Sword and I think another kind of fern.. the fronds are only about 2" wide but tall and more erect

I gotta start learning the real names of these plants.. so I know what the heck ya'll are talking about..lol

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

You can look anything up under the common name on Daves Plant Files. Keep doing that often enough and you will pick up a lot. I will never be one to rattle off the names like some on DG either; but it's always ok to use what you know it by.

(Becky) Colmesneil, TX(Zone 8b)

Thanks Sheila.. I know I am not alone in not "knowing" the proper names. but it would help me to know some of them anyway

You bet I am looking at the plant files, but some of those names are almost scary sounding, and I probably couldn't pronounce them right either..lol

I just got the TX Native Plants book by the Wasowski 's.... great book and she even "helps" by sounding the names out !!

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Have you tried the "info" where our Dave himself says the words? Try it on this one. http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/123268/ just click by the species, etc.

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

The Wasowski's book is really good, of course no book can have everything, but it is a lot of help.

(Becky) Colmesneil, TX(Zone 8b)

Thanks Sheila again..lol you are such a great help in helping newbies feel good and right at home. I guess I never paid attention that dave had the same thing to help pronounce the word..lol

Yep Josephine you are right.. just finished the book and didn't find several I am wanting ID'ed.. Oh well... I will bring and hopefully you can help me .... If I had a camera I could post on the natives... story of my life.. my wants are too many!! BTW.. do you like the OLD books about plants, etc? I have 1 that was published in 1898.. I think. So fun to read, as the author talks about some of the plants being in "indian territory"... lol I love the old stuff.. no matter what it is..

OH... and is this "bump" thing when "I" or you go off topic of the thread? IF it is..... I am sooooooo sorry, but I have never had a onetrack mine... I must have one of those "childhood" diseases that carried over in my way old adulthood... or "maybe" I am in my 2nd childhoood... see.. there I go again...lol

Sorry Charlene!!

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

beck, when there isn't a lot of traffic on a particular thread it goes farther and farther down on the list of that paritcular forum. so someone might not have anything new to say but to move the thread back to the top of the forum they'll just say "bump". and immediately the thread goes back to the top so that it is easier to find. as long as we talk it stays near the top.

Don't sweat it, Beck. I for one can never seem to stay on topic :0) I'm so excited today, I have a million baby prying mantises on my porch. See how that happens, LOL

Got you down for the mums, may I have some ferns, please?

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

absolutely, i want a fern too.

(Phyllis) Flint,, TX(Zone 7b)

oh oh oh cocoa I want some of your mantises ...LOL
love those things used to play with them all the time at my grandma's we would treat them almost like pets ...oh but wait an even better idea could snail mail a box of them to my X ...he is afraid of them *evil laugh* (jk but it is a thought)

(Becky) Colmesneil, TX(Zone 8b)

LOL cocoa.. glad I am not alone.... and the baby mantis are soooo cute... weird looking but cute. Thanks for the mums too! Got you for the fern

mama... wondered where you were..lol got you for the fern and thanks sooo much for all you are giving me!

I can dig up more fern if ya'll want more

mibus..... ohhhhh you are a meany... lol I have one of those ex's too, so I know what you mean!!

Buffalo, TX(Zone 8b)

A friend's little girl was playing outside when her dad started to kill a praying mantis. The little girl went ballistic. The dad asked her why she was upset. She said that little mantis is praying for "gramps" to get better and he's telling all the other mantis' to pray for gramps too! You CAN'T kill him!

I just had to share that, it was so cute.

Charlene

(Phyllis) Flint,, TX(Zone 7b)

that is cute thanks char

but you do know the real truth as to why we as women like them so much?
"clue" it has to do with the female and what she does to the male...rofl

Charlene that was sweet. I like them for their menacing ability to tear into cucumber beetles like cupcakes. Bhewwaa ahaa!
