Liz, the cars and trucks stopped driving on the river a couple weeks ago. Snowmobiles just stopped going across on Monday. Those trucks were just there so their drivers could watch the river. Break-up is a really big thing here. It gets everyone outside and going to different parts of the island to check things out. It's pretty much the most exciting time of the year around here. In August we will have been here for 5 years. We lived in Kitchener, about an hour from Toronto, before that and we were very happy to leave.
Ruby, I feel for you with what you're going through with your son. Our first year here we had my BIL come to live with us for a few months. He had dropped out of school and didn't seem to have a lot of direction. We told him that he would have to pay rent here so he would need to get a job. I think that having him come here was really life-changing for him. He was able to get driven to Barrie and then he took the train from there (probably at least 10 hours by himself). Before that he had rarely ever ridden the city bus. He started one job and the first day was physically sick. He stayed with it for about a week before getting a different job. Again the first day he was physically sick. He wanted to go back to his parents but would have had to borrow money to go so that wasn't really an option. In talking with him it was pretty clear that a lot of his problems stemmed from anxiety issues. Once the anxiety was acknowledged and addressed he was able to work out stategies for dealing with it instead of running/hiding from his problems. When he went back to his parents he made a lot of changes and things are looking much better for him now. I know that our situation isn't the same as yours but there is hope. Also, sometimes it does take being forced to do things on your own before you 'wake up'. I really hope things work out for you. You must feel extremely torn.
Ellla's asleep in my arms now so I'm going to put her in bed and get some stuff done.
Best/Worse &What did I learnt today/Chat with Friends #40
Vicky that water in the basement thing would stress me out, especially when it is so cold still. Mold would freak me, we don't much have it hear, too dry. We don't have flees almost at all and we don't have mosquitos hardly either.
One nice thing about here. It is hard to garden though.
Don't try to kill the deer Liz. lol just the skunks and racoons and other critters, let this one live please. Don't hurt Bambi. Just buy Milorganite fertilizer and spread all around to keep at bay.
I am kidding anyway, don't gather against me girls.
I have seedlings to put in cups but have no more styrophome cups so must do that and go buy some straw because I have a large pile of jumk mail and paper to start a new lasagna garden in front. It will just look like crap in the front. arhg!
Shar Shar come out come out of a fetal position and play with us.
Ahhhhhhh, Betty, I got my Pennyblacks seeds today....thank you. We are having sun then showers, sun then showers today or they would already be planted. Can't wait to get the garden going like i want it. I have irises, tulips, of course the wisteria and even rosebuds. Heleborus is in bloom, also some muscari. I am excited with all of it.
gilli it is so fun to read about your life, so different from ours, but sounds good and difficult all at the same time. Nice to see pictures of your little ones.
Ruby, take care of YOU. That is most important right now. Can you start charging him rent since he won't do chores for pay? ahhhh, I don't know. I was pretty lucky with my two, and am not sure how to advise, but I think you are strong enough to handle it very well.
Nice talking with you and Breenie last night, Judy, thanks for checking on me. And just you all wait till I post a photo of the giant hug Judy sent me.
Unbelievable woman, what she thinks of to do for others!
Hope everybody is doing OK, I won't try to backtrack and catch up with everyone, but know that you are in my thoughts daily.
Have a good Friday evening.
Shar
Ha, Dawn, right behind you....sure hope you are feeling better. i did leave my fetal position, and all is well. Thanks.
Thanks ladies. Awww Betty, you saying you loved me, really touched me and was much needed. Shar, I guess that charging rent here would be okay, but one of the statements that I am trying to make is that he is not going to lay around here all summer and sleep all day. If I were to charge him rent, I would feel as though he deserved to do whatever he wanted. So, I believe that it will be better if he just get on out and see how the world treats him. I have babied him long enough. It all boils down to basic disrespect for me. I wouldn't take this sort of treatment from a stranger and shouldn't have to take it from a child.
Betty, I have been hearing way too many stories of the 40 year old guys who are still living at home and driving their parents crazy. I do NOT plan to be one of those, so figure that I need to nip this thing in the bud.
I don't think that he believes that I am serious about putting him out. He just left a bit ago and I told him that he needed to check with the friend he told me about needing a roommate. I told him to check with him today. I guess when I next see him, I will tell him that his clothes and things will be packed on Sunday afternoon waiting for him to take some place else.
Shar, I hear you saying that I need to take care of myself. It really is important that I do so. My Behcets Disease likes to act up whenever I get stressed and that is not fun at all. I am not sure what I will do with all the time that I now spend washing his clothes. That is going to add a lot of extra time to my days. ha-ha An uninterupted nights sleep will be extra special too.
Yes, I am torn but see no other way to handle all of this. Hopefully it will be a case of short term pain for long term gain. I hope that everyone will have an enjoyable weekend. Take care.
Ruby
you too, ruby. Fingers and toes crossed for you. You are handling the decision very well, and we will be right here cheering you on.
Hugggggggs,
Just got home..glad you got the seeds Shar.... stopped in at the wholesalers on my way home, shouldn't be looking for planters as they'll freeze but this one begged me to come home..how could I say NO! It looked pretty and I thought of your gorgeous hanger last year and said why not, even if I have to replace it 3 or 4 times till summer, at least it will look nice in my outdoor picture frame...it needs something even if I have to take it in at night (just what I need, another chore) lol
Then of course three dozen roses said they were friends with the planter so home they came as well..guess with the temps dropping so drastically and my flowers outside having no blooms and not likely to for another month or so I need something to cheer me up...so why not..I deserve a treat, right?
They were wonderful at the hairdressers, only waited about 5 minutes and had them perm and style my hair, then wanted my eyebrows waxed- the young lady said would you mind if we did your upper lip, needs it and there are one or two stray hairs on your chin, can I pluck them..imagine, me being plucked and waxed but I said ok so here I am, all dressed up, looking like a little princess amongst all the flowers that now I'll put in my bedroom, living room, dining room and then go to bed..wasted hairdo...
They are having a birthday party tomorrow night at Paul's (was my father's home on the water before he died) always have mixed emotions when I get invited there, but, I'll probably go but need a gift..he just finished a bar room which is 30' x 42' it's spectacular anyway I planned on going to the big warehouse in Meaford Sunday with Sharon and they have an entire dept. just for bar things so now I'm at a loss, would mean having to go to the party with no gift, wait to by my gift in Meaford Sunday and then give it to him Monday..hate going somewhere where everyone is giving gifts and you give an empty card even though a note included says 'yet to come' so have to think that one out tonight...
Know Sharon has plans tomorrow but will see if they are all day plans..don't want to make the trip 2 days in a row because it's 100 miles away...
OMG you'll never guess what I bought..I don't think I toss and turn at night but I must do so, I get up and my hairdo is every which way but loose..so can you remember how they had those filigree hairnets, so miniature that you didn't know you had one one, well I bought 3 pkgs in hopes that my hair can stay in for more than 1 night..every morning I have to curl it...I'm now 'my own grandma' talk about aging...better not tell my boys because they'll think I've lost it and will consider having me put away...lol.. NOT that there is anything wrong with them, it's just I usually dress so hip and act young for my age and to see me with a hairnet???? lordy/lordy what's becoming of me....
Ruby, know you'll make the right decision...saying prayers...
Dawn, are you feeling any better? Someone told me that I should take a glass and roll up a leaf of newspaper fold in the bottom edges to create a glass instead of sterofoam and then I can just plant the newspaper cup without distrubing the plant? Might be something you can try...one of these days I'm going to get brave and try a lasagna bed...
Was on the thread where you get bales and plant them..that sounds absolutely amazing..said I'd do it this year but I'd have to find the bales first...
Shar, isn't that Judy something else..she's always thinking of others...earthly angel she is...we're all lucky to have her as our friends, as are we with all of these lovely ladies...
Read something on another thread, sounded a bit cruel but am sure the girl said it for the right reasons and it just came out wrong..anyway I do hope, in fact I'm sure that no of us would deliberately hurt anyones feelings and if we did, we'd be forgiven...
Well girls, I've gabbed and gabbed ..now I need to go find a home for all those roses..take my bath, get into some silkie p.j.'s, put my feet up and relax...lol
Best of today...treating myself..
Worse of today..talking to Kim..re her mother
What did I learn today...that although you don't have plans for anything special you can do something for yourself..makes you feel special..don't need it to be a DH, boyfriend, family to make it feel special..it should be special because we are special...how that.????
Yet another thing Shar, I was thinking of Aunt Bett when Lydia (my medicine woman) dropped off some meds...it's for Sharon and it's called (Rheila drops) they are for cough and voice and also asthma and she says if you can't sleep take 3 at night and you'll sleep like a baby..guess it's also known as 'salmiak Pastillen'..isn't she a doll!
It's thundering and lightning, soft rain - doesn't seem as though it will last long..hope it does, will do wonders for the gardens..had trouble with lighting string I set up in tree near pond..think I've got it fixed, we'll see...so, guess I can't go to bed right now, must wait for darkness to see if I put the solar panel in the right place..lol
think it is a licorice, Betty, not sure, but i also think it is high in sodium. Again i am not sure.
Lovely hanging basket...beautiful flowers. You had a fun day, didn't you??
Working on another article....that helps me make it through the nights.
dawn, think you got judy and i mixed up lol
i dont get deer down in the flat land.
Hi..Hope you all had a happy friday!
Mine was mostly uneventfull. Actually, LOL, I blew the day..and spent most of it vertically! Remote in hand and had marothon of all the shows I missed! Shhhh, thats a secret to everyone in my house. hehhe, sometimes just got to take my space. I loved it too!
Gillian, I am so at awe with your Island. And I have such big smiles for Ella. So sweet, hehe, with the color of muddied jacket, looks like she had a grand time adventuring. Sure hope you got some time to yourself. Glad to hear DH is better. By now are the roads clearing up? OMG, so if you did have to evacuate, how does that work?? Well, will just pray you won't have to. So good to spend the day with you out there.
Gita, Thank you for responding to Julia. had to laugh at the post. Well, it is her plant...so it's actually only 1 yearish and definatley a little neglected....heheh, kinda reminds me of someone else we know. (no name)..Will make sure she reads your response.
Anyway I appreciate you helped her cu z you know what do I know?
I really Loved your Poem Spring. Made me smile as I read it. Would you mind if I printed it?
Oh yes Happy Birthday to you DD too. Beautiful card you made! Something to be cherished forever.
Ruby, Sweet Gramma, You remain, in my prayers..as all of you do. This is a rough time for you and I know it is horrbly hard.
You will act with love. And You have got to take care of you too. So however this situation turns out, you just come and well all love you up no matter what happens. You've alot of friends her at Daves.
Carole, I am so glad your out and about in the gardens. Lovely plants you got too.
Ves,Always thinking of you. Love to hear what you are up to in green house and in the gardens too.
and I hope that you get the rest you need. too! Hows your weather? We hit the 80's here today!
Hey, June right around corner, eye brow raise and a wink too!
Dawn, and Laura...You both are just sweethearts. good to see you both.
I would like to say to everyone. Thank you, for bringing smiles to my face, joy in my heart, worry to my brain and overall sheer happiness.
It is a pleasure to know each of you.
Betty, I love your treats. tomorrow will get yet another bag of seed. teehee, came home to the best surprise. My Living bird feeder erected and attached! Will snap a pic as soon as DH gets home. Went on a fishing trip!
hahah, I loved your mom poem as well. hehe, gives me something to look forward to. Ha,
Well, I am wiped out from doing much of nothing! kind of cool...so I am going to say goodnight...
Shar, Don't stay up the entire night writing. We enjoyed our talk too.
sleep well everyone..see you on the morrow.
Sharon -
i don't know about anyone else's results, but i winter/spring sowed pennyblack seeds early in April, and they were the LAST things to come up - it took more than 2 weeks before i saw anything, and i was about to give up but the other day, lo and behold, little leaves poking up!
i had marigolds, cosmos, portulaca, strawflowers all come up before the pennyblacks.
(i direct sowed them last year and got nada, so i guess i wasn't expecting much this time...)

I think I am going to direct sow over the weekend, we have been in the 70 to 80 degree bracket all week, so I am going to take a chance with the penny black and some othes. We'll see. I usually direct sow all my seeds the end of april, so maybe......
I am with you Shar. I plan to sow more seed today too. I tell you, when things start blooming around here, it sure will be A sight to see. Every thing that can hold soil has soil in it and I plan to sow, sow, sow. I have a lot of seed that needs to have something done with it. After I sow all of this, I can start collecting again. ha-ha
For those of you who have houseplants, when do you take them outside for the summer? Our last frost date is May 15 and that week after is probably when I will set things out. All of my houseplants did pretty well after being inside all winter. Some are starting to show some signs of weakening, but going outside soon ought to pep them right back up.
After we get the plants outside for the summer, we are having a contractor friend come and install a sliding glass door in the the spare bedroom. I figure that the added light will be good for the housplants next winter. I am also planning to give away some of the houseplants too. The guy that does my massages just moved in to a newly built home. I offered him some plants the other day and he said that he will take inside and outside plants. I am not one to give away plants very easily, but I believe that he will take good care of them, so I don't mind sending some to him. I will give him ones that I have more than one of.
Shar, did you get my earlier message about the purple columbine? It is not black seed after all. Sorry to have confused you. Have you already sown it?
Betty, have you not yet received the Castor Bean seeds? Seems like they should be getting there by now. Did everyone that asked me for seed, get them? If not, drop me a note and I will get more in the mail to you.
Here is hoping that everyone will have a good weekend. Take care each of you very special ladies.
Ruby
