Well, this thread has taken an odd turn LOL. I like that straw. wine. Tastes like soda pop. That's why it's too easy for the kids to drink it though. Not an acquired taste like beer.
I got a delivery of 9 mini roses from Sequoia today. What cute, healthy little plants!

got my bluestone notice yesterday
What a surprise again. I saw the UPS truck drive very slowly by my house, and was like..."I wonder if that's for me?" Sure enough, I got my order from Indiana Berry...
Bluecrop-Blueberry
Elliott-Blueberry
Spartan-Blueberry
Nelson-Blueberry
Encore-Raspberry
Arapaho-Blackberry
Himrod-Sdls Grape
Reliance-Sdls Grape
Sdls Concord-Sdls Grape
Cool. Is the blackberry thornless??
Victor-Yes, Arapaho is thornless. The Encore raspberry has thorns that are almost unnoticeable, and deeper along the cane, not on the growing/fruiting part of the cane; or so the description stated...lol. I'll find out soon enough.
Forgot which blackberries I have but they are really delicious. They will root everywhere if you don't stay on top of them.
I have so many raspberries spreading, I need to get them taken care of soon.
My raspberries have underperformed so far.
I like how Indiana Berry describes how to maintain them...which is mowing them over...my type of clean up! lol.
Raspberries?
I believe it was for any primocane that fruits. Not totally sure. Would have to check the website. Has a wealth of knowledge there. Going there now.
That's the ideal way to treat them, Thom. It's fast and it does the job in 2% of the time it would take you to do it by hand. Every year we must dig up 100 raspberry plants. They keep invading the compost rich vegetable garden instead of heading in the opposite direction.
Victor, this is a copy from their website, although, it is specific to fall bearing type of raspberries, not June bearing.
"Mowing off plants right to the ground, or as low as possible, eliminates pruning as associated with summer bearing raspberries. A rotary, or a bush hog, type mower or flail mower works well. If you go slow the mower will have more time to chop the old canes and they can be left in the field. Wait till plants are fully dormant before mowing. They'll catch snow for needed early spring moisture. We mow ours in the early spring just after the snow melts, but while the ground is still frozen."
Thanks Thom. I have the summer bearing type.
This means I'm going to have to buy a lawnmower...lol...I usually just use RoundUp...lol.

Use a weed wacker.
The canes are formidable so you just might want to rent a bush hog, Thom.
We had Reliance grapes for a while. Finally gave up and let the birds have them. they were good though... sweet. Andy P (Sarahskeeper) planted some 2 seasons ago, I think.
schick, that's an oriole feeder. it's almost the same as a hummer one, but the ports are bigger. DH wants to see if we can get some orioles to come. They're so pretty.
PANIC --- Pirl : Hallsons are shipping the ferns today.I'm further north than you are is it OK to plant ferns now? I didn't think they wouls ship this soon.
Yes, it should be safe. Why not ask them, by Email, and get their opinion? Be sure to tell them your zone and the nightly lows. I bet they'll tell you it's fine to plant them.
Orioles can see the color orange from quite a distance, just like the hummers with red. And they also love oranges and grape jelly, from what I've read.
panic is over
If I would only remember what I read. They ship dormant ferns from April to May. WHEEEEW.
Jan I cut an orange into sections and lay them on the deck rails and they come right up and take them. I also use a needle & thread and hang them off tree branches.
We are trying to rid our place of the 'bramble bushes', AKA some wild blackberry. We can't seem to tame them to a one square foot area (LOL), and they just go everywhere!! Personally - not my kind of plant.
omg...lol. I went nursery looking today. One of my favorite nurseries has the JM 'Shirazz'....they are about 5-6'...BUT...**gulp** $220 a piece! The nursery that is about 1 mile away from has 6 Abies koreanna 'Silberlocke' in stock, all at differing heights from 2'-6'...the 6' are $169 each...which is unusual in the sense that this same nursery, had these last year, at the same size, from the same grower, and they were charging $249 each! $80 difference...might have to get from them...Iseli is the grower.
And 2 people that work at/for another nursery in my area, they graduated from the MG last year, are going to look into ordering a weeping Jap. katsura, and the Oxydendrum that I want...they told me it wouldn't be a problem! So that means I can buy locally without driving to Harrisburg to pick them up (which is about 2hours or so away!)
Yeah...lol.
I'm waiting on my Khlems order, it should be here any minute. My only question is, I ordered 3 items, 1 hosta, and 2 shrubs/trees, they are sending the items in 2 boxes? hmmm...
my bluestone order arrived today.... one was a bit smashed

What are they, Thom? Love the watering can! I received my second Fairweather order. I'll post a pic of one or two of the plants later. One viburnum was over 5 ft high!
Victor getting fancy stuff
Victor-from left to right...Hosta 'Ice Age Trail'=IMHO the only good thing about the order, the root system is pretty great! In the middle we have= Tsuga can. 'Cole's Prostrate'=After checking to see if Ashton Kuscher was around the corner to see if I was being Punked, I check the roots, some of the soil spilled out, and there were small tiny, about 1/4-1/2" silvery/greyish worms wiggling around...I'm gonna bring them to the extension office and see if they are baby earthworms, or nematodes...I have them in a box on the side of the house in quarantine just in case. And on the far right is: Morus alba 'Itsoguma'=this is by far the worst thing I've ever received, it's dormant, but the tiny twigs snapped off, some did not give, nor bend, the roots instead of being that nice healthy root color were a dull grey/black...some were alive near the crown...so, most of them are alive...most, not all. Same thing happened when I was looking at the dirt from this plant, the same little tiny worms.
I took a pic, not sure how to really get a close up of them or not...I'll post if they are actually visible or not.
I'd rather order from Fairweather (so far all of the Fairweather pics are impressive!) or Forest Farm...shipping is about the same for Fairweather, FF, and Klehms...but Klehm's is by far not worth the hype...at all.
That's too bad, Thom. I have never ordered from them because of the small sizes. I still haven't ordered from FF. Don't know why!
