Water Cooler - 7

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

A better draining medium. There is a long sticky on the Container Gardening forum describing it. It all makes a lot of sense, but I've never had much of a problem with things rotting in pots. I just use the commercial mixes - Miracle Gro or Scotts. But it's better for drainage to fill the entire pot than to have a layer of something else at the bottom. When you do that, you raise the level at which the soil will stay wetter and possibly lead to rot over the long term. I use pots primarily for annuals though, so it's not a big concern for me.

Thats great advise, the peanuts go to my SIL 's business.

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

Thanks Victor. That's good to know.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

It's basically all annuals in pots for me too.

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Victor - I had the same experience with repotting and having peanuts tangled all up in the roots. Ugh. That is good info on the pot drainage. Makes sense!

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

Thanks Candyce & Pixie!

That is what I'm looking for Celeste, it's beautiful.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Thanks..it's an older one and I don't recall the name. I'll look and see if I can spare a piece after she's done blooming.

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

Thanks Celeste, I looked a bit in plant files and this is nice.

You're welcome, Debi.

Celeste, I'll drop some off to you the next time we're coming through on our way to the frozen North.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Nanny.....I already have it and a nice yellow called 'Sugar & Butter' to go beside it...but thank you anyways!! LOL

Southeastern, CT(Zone 6a)

I just saw all your great shots in another thread, Celeste. Your irises are gorgeous!

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Thank you! still have a few not open yet.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Are you trying to challenge your DL collection with irises, Celeste? Those are great shots on the Blooms thread.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Thanks Victor....and no on the challenge. I only have maybe 25-30 different iris's and thats Siberians, Japanese, SDB, TB, and Louisiana Iris all together!

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

"only"... sheesh! He he... They're so beautiful Celeste.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

It's still early. I have the utmost confidence in you...

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

LOL Harper...but really, have you ever visited the iris forum and see some of the beds they have?? It's an amazing sea of color and you can tell there are 100's of different cultivators!! Thats why I say 'only'.
I do have a good chunk of daylies and i'll admit it.....almost up to 300 now and I do think it's time to stop.

Now the Lily bulbs have multiplied over the last year in my yard...I had around 48 different ones and this year I would guess im up to 80.

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

I know! It is amazing. Still, having 25-30 different cultivars is a lot! I'd love to see a wide angle shot of your whole yard.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I only have that many varieties of weeds.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

LOL Victor...im sure if you counted shrubs you'd beat me out in a heart beat! I have very few shurbs or tree's that aren't fruit bearing. Most of the tree's a round here 'came with the land'..Mother Nature did most of the landscaping!!

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

I'm with Victor on the weeds.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Sorry to change the subject but I need to know where to buy Iris.

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

Ensata gardens is a good one, Jo Ann

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Thanks,Our iris are all purple,myDD 's are not ready to bloom for many years.

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

I was just on Ensata, I'm looking for purple and white combo. They have some really nice selections. On the iris forum, advanced search, I actually saw many that would fit my description, but none for sale. Glad I have some kind DG friends.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I like the blue and white combo too. Very nice.

Jersey Shore, NJ(Zone 7a)

I have an Iris question. I have some SIBs and TBs that need to be moved and divided. Is the best time right after bloom?

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Yes...July or even August/Sept.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Yes, I've done it in July. And when I ordered iris from Paradise Gardens, they did not arrive until July or August.

Cleveland,GA/Atlanta, GA(Zone 7b)

Thanks Celeste, I needed that info too.
