DC area - Spring Swap, May 24th

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Hah- John hit me with that line too! Then I felt smart that I could discuss Preakness with some knowledge however tiny.
quoted- the race on Saturday in Maryland called The Preakness I believe- ruby, not to make fun but- you have to be long dead around here not to KNOW about Preakness- its one of THE big deals of Maryland, right behind crabs and Orioles. All last week, its all you can hear about.

My time on posting can avry as you see- lately I am scrambling a little. Taking Mom to an appt 3-4 days a week which I do Not mind but its taking all the spare time. along with all the garden stuff popping up. As long as she's feeling this good, my humor career on DG has to suffer!

Crozet, VA

Well, all of the toll booths were courtesy of New Jersey and like I said, only one out of ten knew what he was referring to.

He has another line that he uses whenever he is in a check out line or doing business of any sort. He always asks the people waiting on us if they volunteered to work today. He gets a few laughs from that. It didn't work Saturday on the lady who was at the Reception Desk to The Du Pont house. She thought for a minute and answered, yes, she did volunteer. I had read somewhere before that time that most of the people at the gardens are volunteers.

He keeps everyone on their toes for sure.

OK...I have to cancel....AGAIN. My husband is going to have to work this Saturday as tech support. Can I curse on this forum? I am so angry.

Shenandoah Valley, VA

Noobie, I'll bet somebody could pick you up and bring you. Darned husbands. Can't live with them, can't live with them. LOL

Glen Burnie, MD(Zone 7a)

hart---thanks but hubby wasn't coming. He was watching the kids for me so I could attend. But you are sweet for offering.

Shenandoah Valley, VA

Oh, shoot. Can you bring the kids? I think Lynda's kids are coming, aren't they Lynda?

Strasburg, VA(Zone 6b)

yep :-)

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

I was picking up noobie.......everything was arranged.

Audra--would you want to bring the kids? It's OK with me! How old are they? How many?
I would rather you be with me to navigate than me trying to do both driving alone. That can be very distracting....AND dangerous....

I could manage--space wise.....Some of the plants--like the Naked ladies--have no tops left. They could just be stacked on top of each other in a crate. The tables fold flat and everything can go on top.

Please think about it and let me know asap.....

Gita

Glen Burnie, MD(Zone 7a)

I don't think that would be wise. I'd spend more time hearing them complain about wanting to go home and play outside than I would getting to know everyone.

This was supposed to me my personal "get away" day where I just do something for me. They rarely, if ever happen, but this was supposed to be the day.

Sorry guys. This is the second time this has happened. :o(

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Do you have a teen neighbor needing some extra fundage or a relative near by that could help you out so you could have a grown up day to yourself? Becky and Greg sweetly rescue me every now and then...they'll never know what it means to me...just to get away for a bit with grown ups. ((Becky))

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

We are all so engrossed in planning all this and that re the Swap!!!.

Don't forget that his weekend is Memorial Day weekend and the rods will be full of travelers....

Might be smart to add a half an hour to your planned travel schedule.....

Chantell,

I wish I did. My mother in law had knee surgery so she can't. My parents live in NC. So I just can't have my day to myself.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Nutterbutters!! Noobie! *whiiiiiinne* Well, as I recall, your DH just started a new job (?), so I guess he can't easily wriggle out of this. I'd check with larlienda, though -- I think your kids are similar in age, and maybe the two of you could take it in turns to entertain the kids and then join in the adult fun.

Gita, you might check with Shirley if you're looking for a navigator... maybe you could caravan down with Sally (2 vehicles, and you could fight over who gets Shirley for company LOL).

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

noobi- I think I can fully understand your position. I't s only pretty recently that I have taken my liberty. I had a lot of time home with kids. YOU are an AWESOME mom for commiting to your kids And my kids are snotty pains in the butt not easily jumping into unknown situations and would have been very distractingto me if I had taken them to something like this, so I never did.
Its hard to be a manic gardener with small children- notice not many of us attempt it.
So- whatever anybody wants to give I will bring here and nurture and deliver to you!!!

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

Noobie: How old are your kids? Would it be possible to rent a couple videos for them that they haven't seen and play them at Bec's, if she is willing?

Crozet, VA

Sounds like everyone wants you to come really badly noobie. Gosh, it has been a good while, but I remember the days of smaller children too. I hope that something can be figured out for you.

Happy, are you still coming by on Saturday? The coreopsis is getting tall. Would it be okay to dig it up Friday afternoon or Saturday morning, and pack it in papertowels wrapped in individual bags? I could then put it in a box. Most of the pots that I have would be too small for these.

Here's this morning's pictures. I already pulled some out about a month ago and discarded it because I needed the room. I have plenty all over the garden.

If Happy can't stop by on Saturday, and someone else wants to, let me know. I'm right off the first exit on 495 in Virginia. You can hear the highway from here.

Here's a shoot of a different grouping. I'll just be pulling up large groups of these. I have plots of them all over, and the multiply quickly. I can toss in some annuals as well.

You all are SO kind for your many offers. Sally, if you want to get plants for me, that would be awesome!

You understand my plight completely that if I brought them, I would spend more time catering to them and very little getting to know everyone.

Critter...you're right...new job so he can't wriggle out of it. Plus he's the main tech lead for the capital one account. *sigh* :o(

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

noobie - I DO understand (believe me) - granted mine are: 16, 17, 19, 21(grandbaby is 1) now....but I oh so remember those younger days. They were delightful but not at adult get togethers....was very boring for them esp. of the host/hostess didn't have kids of their own (read: no one to play with and NON-child-proof homes) - selfishly it did not make for an enjoyable time for me. I'm sure we'll be having another...seeing how many we've had just since last year at this time. Word of un-asked for advice - make sure to take time for YOU on occasion when you can, though. Helps moms keep their sanity.

Brunswick, MD(Zone 6b)

Becky and or Chantell. When you go to Jill's do you go Route 7 or Route 267 to Route 15? I'm asking not just for Saturday, but I also have a wedding reception for my niece to attend at the Hyatt in Dulles on Friday around 6pm. I usually go Route 7, but I was wondering if 267 wouldn't be better with traffic at that time of the evening and it being the start of a holiday weekend.

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

Penne: I am planning to stop by Saturday. My problem is that will be running very late as it is, so if anyone else is in a good position to pick the plants up, by all means speak up.

I may leave the class I have Saturday's a bit early, but I probably won't know until I see what we are doing Saturday, so that would put me at your house anywhere from noon to two. Does that work for you?

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

miatablu - I'm embarrassed to say Becky always drives and I don't pay a bit of attention. I know she's got company over - I'll try and get your question to her though.

McLean, VA(Zone 6b)

Happy, that is fine. If you feel that you can't make it because of your class don't worry. I don't want you to feel pressured to stop. Since it is a holiday weekend, the traffic may be bad anyway. I didn't realize until this week that the swap was going to be Memorial Day weekend.

We have company this weekend, and a birthday party that we need to attend. I can leave everything in a box for you. Send me a D-mail. No problems either way.

Sequim, WA(Zone 8a)

Miata - I take 28 to 267 to 15 :) - easiest route...

Metro DC, MD(Zone 7a)

Brioche dough is rising. Still need to go out and get a wheel of brie.

I have done NOTHING to prepare for the swap, but am off work today and will start sorting plants out today. For those who have asked for parsley (especially all who d-mailed), I'll gather up as many as I can find/dig up and bring the whole lot!

I'm afraid that I may not have a list together to post here, so I'll just bring whatever I have and you can pick through what I've got tomorrow. Sorry for that, but you might say that my life has been rather Hectic of late for me.

Will check back in later today/tonight with an update.

cheers!
w

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

I hope all is ok and that your life is fun hectic (I'm sure life with the big Z is wild and crazy).

Metro DC, MD(Zone 7a)

Look how big he's gotten! He sure is one gorgeous dog.

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Ohhh could just smooched that kisser!!! Wrightie have you mentioned what you'd like from the rest of us?

Metro DC, MD(Zone 7a)

Chantell, I'm not caught up enough to do that! I'll take whatever Leavins that you kids have - edibles & fragrance, hollyhocks, foxgloves, ferns, whatevva anyone has extras of? I need to get out and start potting up and labeling stuff.

It looks like there may be multiple swap related threads going, so I'm not even sure where to look anymore. Sorry, just really busy this Spring.

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Wasn't fussin' at you - buddy ole pal - just wanted to make sure I brought you something....as I'm not bring extras this year...too many things last year to try and shove at folks or bring back home. I'll see what I have.

Metro DC, MD(Zone 7a)

I'm gonna give you a big fat kiss tomorrow, C!

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

with fresh puppy slobber? ^_^

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

Wrightie (and anyone else):

Here is my own list: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/p.php?pid=4986371 I don't need or want anything from you (you already brought my a ton of plants, anyway) except for you to come and have fun, and except for the umpteenth time can you please remind me how to make alfalfa tea?

Here is the lastest "haves/wants" thread. http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/850553/#new There was an earlier thread (see below), but many people copied over their lists to this thread.

Metro DC, MD(Zone 7a)

yep! here, we call it drool though.

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

My mother, before plunking a big smooch on our dog (who has since passed on -- actually they both have), would say "Oh you have the most kissable lips." I heard that many times a day, always with reference to the dog, who would obediently pucker up. jk.

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

The jk was about the puckering.

Metro DC, MD(Zone 7a)

SNORT! Thanks for the links! I'm heading to the barn now, will be back later to read.

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Ahhh I love it...I've got to get a pic of Chloe who adamantly refuses to give kisses to the rest of us - she'll literally CHASE them lips puckered making kissing sounds...the brat!
