DG Names.....What's your real name??

Greensboro, AL

cmdelg: You are right. Rice and beans would be healthier. I have been making bean burritos lately. I read the packaging on the instructions: partially hydrogenated soybean oil.

yuuuuugh. I was trying to make a healthy meal.

If you read all your ingredients again, it probably has corn. :-)

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Hi Maureen! Welcome to the N.E. forum and all the friendly nuts here! LOL

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Welcome, Maureen.
I loved the Big Bad Wolf at Busch Gardens until the final drop...I would have been fine if it wasn't for that.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Welcome to the craziness, Maureen.

Southern Dutchess Co, NY(Zone 5b)

Hi Maureen. Welcome, and hope to hear more from your neck of the woods!

Greensboro, AL

Im not supposed to be here, but hello anyway Maureen!

Upper Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 5a)

Welcome Maureen - you're added to the list!! Gloria (I'm just assuming it's Gloria, but then again my screen name is phoebe but my real name is Eleanor), since you're here, you are on the list also!!!! LOL You're northeast of something so welcome to you also!!! Eleanor

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Gloria is northeast of Demopolis so she certainly belongs here!

Calvert City, KY(Zone 7a)

Hi Maureen, I don't belong here either, but the way the wind blew and the storms came today I think I am closer to Pirl than I was this time yesterday.

We had never ending storms all afternoon, and I am not too sure about tonight. I hope it eases before blowing through Louisville because Derby parties are hopping there tonight...and tomorrow. I love the derby but I think I outgrew it.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Good luck and be safe, Sharon. Been some violent weather in the heartland lately.

Calvert City, KY(Zone 7a)

The cats and I are under the bed as we speak.
Thanks Victor.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

And the computer?

Jersey Shore, NJ(Zone 7a)

Welcome to the NE frenzy Maureen.
Sharon, I hope your weather lets up. I always loved the Derby, but after Barbaro I can't bear to watch the races.

Greensboro, AL

Barbaro? what happened?

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Be safe Sharon...nasty storms!!

South Hamilton, MA

Barbaro suffered a broken leg in the Preakness. there was an article in the WSJ today claiming that many of the top race horses are descended from Native Dancer & foot problems are showing up. Not as sad with plants but the hybridizers have to watch out for inherited weaknesses too.

Calvert City, KY(Zone 7a)

We had another storm..AGAIN...I can't bear to think about Barbaro, and he tried so hard to survive. That was so sad.

We have a little girl-horse who will be racing tomorrow, Ladies.

Yes Victor the computer and the cell phone get under the bed with the cats and me.....and my red shoes, in case I get blown away and want to get back.

Cleveland,GA/Atlanta, GA(Zone 7b)

I had a filly named Folly and DH had a filly named Fiddlesticks. They were euphonious fast flying fillies for fun (now fermenting in the field). Frankly, fantasized fertilizing both fecund fillies for future filly fun.

I favor the filly for the first five furlongs. Hope she's fast in the finish! Must now go and ice the silver julep cups. Will pluck fresh mint in the dewy a.m.

Laurel

Calvert City, KY(Zone 7a)

Laurel, sounds as if you have already started on the mint julep.......I went outside and put little umbrellas up to shield my mint from the wind.

Do you cheat and use a mix, or do you boil the sugar just like you are supposed to?? Just wondering.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Sharon - wishing you shelter from the storm! Be safe.

Greensboro, AL

I remember going to a horse auction when I was in school at the U. of Kentucky. I learned that many of the horses (mares) were on the block because of minor injuries. The owners didn't want the injuries to affect their stock of upcoming racers - - - even though the injuries had nothing to do with genetics.

Cleveland,GA/Atlanta, GA(Zone 7b)

Sharon, I never cheat and didn't start early. That would foil the frivolous fun. Of course the sugar must be boiled (no crystals). There's tradition involved here woman! I'll have to participate by radio as we only get one channel up here. I put the speakers on in the garden and get the whole event while weeding and juleping! You wouldn't want to know about the julep cups fo' sure, but lets say they won't be traditional :).

I"m luxuriating in a very unexpected extra few days at Maypop. Forget that I fell in the pond while trying to plant a water lily and met up with the first chiggers of the season.

Greensboro, AL

Yes. Sharran. Be safe. Listen to the cats. They will tell you when to get under the bed!

We've had wind here all day. The storm is supposed to come in here tomorrow afternoon.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Hide under your bed with your favorite veggies, Gloria. Be safe.

Calvert City, KY(Zone 7a)

When I lived in Louisville and went to the Derby every year, I got to go into the gardens where only people with press passes could go (I dated a hunky TV reporter) anyway there was a split rail fence between the people and the path that the horses walked as they were going into the race area. I could get up close and personal with the horses, beautiful things. I loved the colors, the majesty of these wonderful creatures. As soon as the race started (also good seats for that) I had to hide my eyes because I was so afraid one of the horses would get hurt, get hit by a whip,.....and sometimes it happened. So I went to the races for the color, certainly not to see the race.
And mint juleps, too.

Thanks Pirl, another one is on its way. It is glowing yellow outside with a rumble in the distance. Jazz Cat is on my feet, and Daisy is already under the bed again.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Long ago, when we were first renovating the kitchen, a sudden summer storm had one of our Lhasas so frightened she jumped into the vacancy where the wall oven was to go and wouldn't come out until the storm passed. We know of another dog that tried to climb into the dishwasher during a storm. Funny critters!

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

My dog loves to hide under the deck during a thunderstorm, will come out of the garage where it is warm and dry, stay under the deck til the storm stops, then back into the garage when it's over.

Good luck with the storms Sharon.

Calvert City, KY(Zone 7a)

Thanks, Debi, Your dog wants an escape route.
I agree with the dog.

Still storming, Gloria, but Jazz is still on my feet, so it must not be too bad or he would be with Daisy.

Greensboro, AL

Roscoe likes to go up on the balcony. When Ivan came up I had to tie him to keep him down stairs. He would have been a flying dog, 115 mph winds.

Jersey Shore, NJ(Zone 7a)

I've never had a mint julep, but I have endured a chigger attack. Me thinks I would prefer the Julep!

Cleveland,GA/Atlanta, GA(Zone 7b)

I'm sure juleps were invented to survive chiggers as the itch is awful. Sharran, two words here...Elijah Craig. Hope the storms are abating. It's no fun to be windswept on dry land. I'm wishing you well here.

Gloria...got me going on the horse auction. I bought the cutest piebald pony at a chicken house auction up here while DH was visiting the Port-O-Potty. Talk about the thread where S.O's (significant others) think your nuts? When he returned and I told him about the new acquisition he wanted to know where I intended to put him. I said no problem, the kids promise to take care of him :). Ritz Bitz lived on the deck for a week while I ordered a bunch of lumber and a power auger. Sherrie...thinking of you here because the rental guy called the power auger the "widow maker". So, I came home with the auger and handed it to DH and asked him where the insurance policy was (lol). Got to give him credit, he's a sport!!!

Calvert City, KY(Zone 7a)

Maker's Mark, dahlin', only way to go......

Greensboro, AL

In the field we kept clear nail polish to paint on them.

Cleveland,GA/Atlanta, GA(Zone 7b)

Umm, OK! See you tomorrow...late afternoon. Bet'n on it.

Cleveland,GA/Atlanta, GA(Zone 7b)

Gloria, we did that when I went to camp up here a zillion years ago. Then I learned that contrary to lore that the chigger is in that little hole in the GIANT mound, it's just a skin reaction. There is no critter in there. I use a pramoxin based lotion such as Pramgel or a no name brand anti-itch lotion with pramoxin. Always on hand for the summer. The recent thread on Skin So Soft...well they won't go on you if you use it. By blackberry season they are fierce and you need to decide whether you want to smell like an Avon product if you plan to present in public that day.
