What was the 1st record/single you ever bought? part 2

(Zone 7a)

Just a fun thing to add here...

When I was a kid in the sixties, my brothers and I used to listen to the Beach Boys on an actual beach. They'd play for anyone who'd listen, of which there weren't many. My mom freaked when she found out we were sneaking off the listen to "rock" songs!!! How funny is that? This was at Laguna Beach and over at Long Beach.

How cool!

(Zone 7a)

Yup. I understand the remaining members still play? I haven't heard them. And I don't know if I'd like them if I did.

Putnam County, IN(Zone 5b)

I never personnally could understand the appeal of Chicago...but totally respect those who like them, okay!

Rutland , MA(Zone 5b)

yesterday i heard don mclains song "american pie" and just how long a song it was. i later heard that the original version was 27 minutes long and they told him it would never sell. the way it was released i believe still qualifies as one of the longest song ever.

i remember seeing peter paul and mary at the bitter end in greenwich villege before they made it big.

Crozet, VA

Oh my gosh....you all are bringing up some really talented people's names. Truth be told, I love all music and am in awe of people who have such wonderful voices and also in awe of people who seem to become one with the instruments that they play.

Fun topic.

i was talking to a friend who told me that "american pie" was written as a tribute to buddy holly.

Divernon, IL(Zone 5b)

Crozet, VA

Jesus Christ Super Star

Billy Jack

(Zone 7a)

Not a song, but the theme music from Jurasic Park is my favorite movie piece.

Rutland , MA(Zone 5b)

just finsiehd watching it for the 1,000,000 time. it's a grat movie.

Gladwin, MI(Zone 5a)

The superstar soundtrack is great.
I really like the old tv theme songs, even though I haven't watched tv in 6 years.

Rutland , MA(Zone 5b)

and why is that??

(Zone 7a)

They don't have one.

Rutland , MA(Zone 5b)

now you are kidding me.

Gladwin, MI(Zone 5a)

No, we moved 6 years ago, I called to have the cable unhooked at the old house and put in at the new house.
Well, the lady could not understand why I wanted to cancel at the old house. I told her nicely 5 times that we had moved and no longer need it there. After about a half hour, she finally got it and then I asked about getting cable at our new house, she said because it was a "new" residence it would take 6 weeks, to call back then.
I was so mad, I never called back. We never missed the tv, as we were busy with the new house and then months went by, then years.
We just quit cold turkey. It was not even something we planned on doing. Somehow we still are living.

(although my mom gave me the first year of Ugly Betty on dvd and I got to say, I am hooked!)
But I will wait until the dvd comes out for this year. I am patient.

Crozet, VA

Way to go on NO TV there Chick. I didn't watch TV for about a ten year period when I was raising my two sons. I grew weary of never being allowed to finish even a 30 minute sitcom without interuption from a little one. I became hooked again following the death of Princess Diana in 1997. TV now plays a major part in my day.

I am sure that things would get done quicker around here if we didn't have the idiot box going most of the time. It is so easy to get side tracked by it.

Anyway, my hat's off to you.

Ruby

Gladwin, MI(Zone 5a)

Thanks, when I tell people I don't watch tv they mostly think it is for reasons of making a statement against tv. That is not it at all. I enjoyed tv as much as the next person.

But after not watching for a while, I found that the programing lately has been mostly things I would not find interesting anyway. And I think about the endless reruns that I used to watch. The wasted time. I just have found no reason to hook back up to an antenna. (I would have to buy a new tv anyway, due to the digital thing)

We went to a friends to watch the superbowl this year. Wow, after not watching tv, you see how much more hype there is, the constant flashing, the endless comercials. It was not even enjoyable.

I am getting to be such a fuddy duddy.

So what tv theme songs are everyone's favorites?

I liked cheers, Mash, mission impossible, star trek, bonanza, gilligans island. (just to name a few) Oh, the pink panther by Henry Mancini has to be my all time favorite theme song.

(Zone 7a)

Brady Bunch!!!

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

It's not a TV Theme Song, but I have always loved The Stripper LOL! It was on a Gillette Commercial in the 1960s, though, so I'm counting it. "Take it alllllllll off!"

And I can't hum it, but I was thinking Burke's Law had a good one.

Missouri City, TX

How 'bout the theme from Peter Gunn - another Mancini composition.

Long Beach, CA(Zone 10a)

cpartschick: I don't watch tv either anymore...no interest in most of what's on nowdays.

I always liked the theme song from Dr. Kildare.

Rutland , MA(Zone 5b)

i have to have television. its only me and deb in the house now but we still have the 4 t.v.s i do not watch any reality shows but i enjy the sci fi channel and the nature channels. oh, and House is still my favorite show.

i liked the theme song from peter gunn and mission impossible.

Gladwin, MI(Zone 5a)

Forgot peter gun. Yes, that is a good one.

The greatest american hero had a better song than show.

The adams family, the patty duke show, the andy griffith show, rawhide, Happy Trails from Roy Rogers. But not Mr Rogers' song! ha

My husband is brewing beer in the basement. The big pail has a bubbler on top and it reminded me of that really old tv comercial for coffee, where the coffee is perking and singing. I tried to mimic the old comercial (badly) but he remembered and knew what I was getting at and had a laugh. (now that will be stuck in his head)

Long Beach, CA(Zone 10a)

One time my dad called my mom from work at the last minute, and said he was bringing his boss home for dinner. Mom freaked and we had to run around like crazy people cleaning up the house in 10 minutes.
American Bandstand was just coming on, and that fast theme song went perfectly with the cleaning frenzy that was taking place.

Gladwin, MI(Zone 5a)

Yeah, that is a good one. I love that one.

Crozet, VA

Cool, love it Jasper. I can see it now.

Hahira, GA(Zone 8b)

Well, I was prettty smart back "in the day", & spent my first hard-eaned $ on a James Taylor album! Still have it & took the jacket to a concert at a relatively small venue last year, hoping for an autograph - but, they only let the big-money ticketholders get close enough ! I was NOT happy about that! Maybe someday...Samantha

NORTH CENTRAL, PA(Zone 5a)

Waiting?........so am I. My record got broken and tossed along the way. But that score keeps being remembered and comes to mind frequently. I know I was peddling Grit for three cents a copy. If I remember correctly the record was purchased from McCroy's 5 & 10 for twenty nine cents. Now they want a quarter just to play one in our 50's Restrurant.

(Zone 7a)

I pulled out my Bob Dylan this morning...How does one forget such powerful songs?!?!

I'm changing my answer on who my favorite male voice is. Mr. Dylan has it hands down!

Rutland , MA(Zone 5b)

he wrote some fantastic and powerful songs but i never did go for his singing if thats what you call it.

Crozet, VA

Ha-ha, Herbie, you crack me up!!! I understand what you are saying in regards to Dylan. Some of his songs are almost non-musical it seems. But......I did hear one played on Cold Case earlier today when watching it, and I could see why Kwanjin said he was a favorite. It sounded pretty good.

I love the songs of people like Bob Dylan, Rod Stewart and Neil Young, but the voices are actually odd if you listen objectively.

True, but Bob Dylan is definitely an icon of the era.

(Zone 7a)

Have to say Bob is an icon for a reason. If you listen to the words of his songs, they're some of the best poetry I've ever heard.

Here's him doing Mr. Tambourine Man.

The series of Dylan / Baez back and forth songs were outstanding. A lot of people were not aware of that connection.

(Zone 7a)

NOW you're talking! LOL
