What was the 1st record/single you ever bought? part 2

Oh my goodness ... I've never experienced an earth quake. Been through the remains of a couple of hurricanes with winds up to 50 mph, and that's enough for me.

Speaking of Carol King ... my fav song by her was probably Sweet Seasons. :)

Buffalo, TX(Zone 8b)

Well, I had brothers 6 and 8 years older than me, so I didn't have to buy any records for a long time. We had one little record player and we all listened.

I think the first one that I owned myself was
Love me Tender by Elvis Presley.

We went to see his first movie and I got that record around that time.

I'm telling my age! LOL
Charlene

Don't worry, Charlene ... we've all been doing that! LOL

There was an aftershock of the earthquake this morning around 10:00. Our house shook. It does that sometimes when there's a strong wind, because it's a very tall, old house. I looked out the window thinking the wind had picked up, but it hadn't. I forgot about it until I heard them talking about the aftershock on the noon news and how far reaching it was. i now realize that it was the aftershock that made the house shutter. We're 60 miles due west of Chicago. Our horse must have felt it too because he's staying in the barn today. That never happens unless it's time to eat.

Rutland , MA(Zone 5b)

thankfully i have never gone through anything like that.
just got a notice on my e-mail that neil diamon will be appearing here at madison square garden in august. i've been to two of his concerts and i think they are great. "brother loves traveling salvaton show" is one of my favorites from him.

Oooh, I use to play his songs all the time! Remember Red Red Wine?

Rutland , MA(Zone 5b)

i remember that song but i don't remember him singing it.

Hmm, I thought it was him. Maybe not?

Oh ... here ya go, Frank!

Written by: neil diamond

Red, red wine
Go to my head
Make me forget that i
Still need her so

Red, red wine
Its up to you
All I can do, Ive done
But memories wont go
No, memories wont go

Id have sworn
That with time
Thoughts of you
Would leave my head
I was wrong
And I find
Just one thing
Makes me forget

Red, red wine
Stay close to me
Dont let me be alone
Its tearing apart
My blue, blue heart

Rutland , MA(Zone 5b)

Hi folks. This same topic came up on another forum and Herbie gave me the link to this. I remember first getting in to music because of seeing the Beatles on Ed Sullivan. I was in the second grade then. A few years later it was all about The Monkees for me. When speaking of singles, I believe that the first single that I can remember buying was "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds. It had some sort of connection with LSD. (LSD - Lucy Sky Diamonds) That just goes to show me that even way early on the hippie/drug lifestyle appealed to me. Yes, though just a few years to young for Woodstock and Haight Ashbury, I knew even in Elementary School that I wasn't cut from the typical cloth. Always a rebel and I am expecting my own kids to do better than I did, with little luck too.

Anyway, great topic Susan.

Crozet, VA

Very intersting Herbie. The female that comes to mind was mentioned here earlier. Carol King. Hmmm.....never really given it a whole lot of thought, but I suppose that I would have to name James Taylor to male category. Now, both of these are making me show my age too. I am not really current with this, so will give it more thought over the next few days and check back in.

One thing that I do know is that I married a "Dead Head." My husband has been to numerous Grateful Dead concerts. When I first met him and began dating, my older son was a teen at the time and was involved in playing in a band with some of his buddies. Ben, the older son became a Grateful Dead lover too.

This was back about fifteen years ago when I met John and Ben was Middle School age. One of his friends that played with the band moved to Hollywood a few years back and is now a member of the group "Pink." We always knew that this guy was going to do something big. The last band that Ben was involved with played Bluegrass. He plays the stand up bass for that. He has recently moved to a new house and is setting up his spare room as his music room. I had hoped that he would go to a music college, but he had different plans than that. Oh well, he seems happy enough and that is all that matters.

I need to get up and move around and get some things accomplished. Have a good day all.

Oh yeah, now nanny, I loved the voice of Janis Joplin too. Amazing talent!!!

(Zone 7a)

I think Geddy Lee from Rush has to be my favorite male voice. Female? There are a few and I can't choose between them. Janis is on the list. Peggy Lee is another. As is Billie Holiday, Eartha Kitt, Enya...

Gladwin, MI(Zone 5a)

Don't have just one favorite. Favorite voices, Freddy Mercury, Phil Collins, Neil Young, Matchbox 20, Santana.
Female, Janis, Blonde, Pat Benitar.
But gee, I like alot of different voices.

Divernon, IL(Zone 5b)

though once rock, now it's all blues for me:
Etta James
Colin James

Putnam County, IN(Zone 5b)

Melissa Etheridge is one that would have to be tied wth Janis for me after some thought!

Rutland , MA(Zone 5b)

i never cared for janis. don't know if it wss her voice or her style of singing that i didn't care for.

at one time i thought that barbar strisdan (sp) hadthe best female voice but then celine came along and i had to change my mind.

Crozet, VA

And Celine Dion is miles above Barbara Streisand in personality too.

Chicks, I have the Tarzan Album by Phil Collins. I listened to that CD more times than I can count. Looking back to the late 1990's there were issues going on in my life that made the Tarzan story, and especially the mama apes stories very close and dear to me. Since I haven't listened to it in years, I am not even sure where the CD is now. Oh well. It would probably be very sad for me to listen to it.

Alright to those reading this. Fess up. Tell us your favorite artist.

Ruby

Wow ... I haven't checked this thread out in several days ... now look, y'all have been yacking away! hahaha

My all time fav male voice is Elvis. No one beats him in my opinion. He crossed all the lines and could sing rock, blues, country, Christian ... anything he wanted to. He'll always be a king in the music field to me. I think I have to agree with Frank about celine dion. I can remember the first time I heard her sing. This is no joke. I was vacuuming with the sterio up and heard this beautiful song ... turned it off and she actually made me cry.

There are soooo many great singers out there, though. I have that * favorite * song for each era of my life. You know, the one that when you here it, you stop and go back in time?

Missouri City, TX

Gonna give away age again --
Female voices - Julie London, Joan Baez, Patsy Cline, Claudine Longet
Male voices - Tennessee Earnie Ford, Roy Orbison, Mario Lanza, Ray Price

Mequon, WI(Zone 4b)

Just found this thread - great reading!

My first record was "Rubber Ducky" (I think from Sesame Street?)

Favorite male singer, hands down, is Neil Young (without the CSN); not sure about female singer, as I usually just prefer men :) - maybe Etta James?

Gladwin, MI(Zone 5a)

Yes, Rubber duckie from Sesame street. My son played that so many times it drove me nuts. But what a cute song. (the other one he liked from SSt. was C is for cookie)

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

My favorites -- Dusty Springfield who recorded You don't have to say you love me; Wishin' and hopin'; We'll sing in the Sunshine; Windmills of your mind; What the world needs now (is love); Walk on By; Sunny; Spooky; Son of a Preacher man; Put a little love in your heart; As long as we've got each other (the theme from Growing Pains TV Show); and a host of others. She started out sort of country, then went pop, then went soul, then went blues, so she has a LOT of songs over a long time span.

Niel Diamond has the same sort of career span, which I think is so awesome, but Eric Clapton would be my fave male.

Oh, I have so many of each, it's too hard to think of them all. . and then choose.

I despise both Celine Dion and Barbra Streisand...I agree, their voices are perfect, but I cannot stand their song choices. They just drone on and on. My most hated song is the one that starts out, "Peeeeeeee-pul, Peeeeeeee-pul who need peeeeeee-pul, are the lucccccccccccck-iest peeeeeeee-puuuuuuuuuuuuuuul in the woooooooooooorld."

My second most hated is something about love being soft like a rocking chair.

Rutland , MA(Zone 5b)

o.k. now lets go for your favorite MALE group (two or more)

this one is tough. my nbr one would be the everly brothers cause i think they harmonized the best. also the kingston trio comes to mind and i can't leave out chicago.

Putnam County, IN(Zone 5b)

The Beatles

Traveling Wilbury's

Gladwin, MI(Zone 5a)

The big band sound of chicago is a hit with me.

But my favorite has to be pink floyd or led zepplin. They are musicians.

Waterman, IL(Zone 5a)

Don't forget the Beach Boys for harmony.

Long Beach, CA(Zone 10a)

The Temptations or the 4 Tops...hard to decide !

Missouri City, TX

Ink Spots, Mills Brothers, Commodores, Lettermen, Statler Brothers - all great sounding male groups.

Another amazing female - Linda Ronstadt.

Statler Brother's ... that's good and Chicago a definite! This is a toughy. Gotta think on this one. There's toooo many for sure. I love Gospel harmoney.

(Zone 7a)

How about Simon and Garfunkel? Awesome voices. They blended so well together.

Rutland , MA(Zone 5b)

oh man, i forgot all about them andthe lettermen they were great. i was never into the "motown" sound.

pastime - never considered them for their harmonizing because they all had the same type of voice (high). funny how they never made in california when they first started out.
