Tropical garden #8

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

LOL...hey Mitch...I see you've been busy on the coop over there!
Can't wait to meetcha next week!

Lindsay, OK(Zone 7a)

Same here - coop was fun to take a part in just not sure I ever will do it again :-)

Cannot wait to meet you too - Christi told me so much about you and your garden I cannot wait to meet the man who works wonders with tropical plants.

Red Oak, TX

Rj, I was like a kid in a candy store. It is seldom that you get sutch opportunity to find rare tropical plants that size.
I am now enjoying looking up the latin names and finding just the right spot in the garden for them.
I have never seen a crinum like yours before. I am still wating for my plain jane ones to bloom.
Look who just now decided to bloom here in Red Oak.

This is an alocasia argentea. Usually they are very small when you mail order them. Look at the size of this one I bought in Houston.

I can't even imagine what an organizational phenomena that coop has to be! I'd probably pull my hair out.

Rita...the cross vine is blooming!
Did you put the alocasia argentea in the ground already? I haven't .

Thumbnail by candela
Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

It has one big flush of blooms every year, then sporadically blooms through out the year.
this year, it bloomed an uncommonly long time..

Ritas is just getting going..looks good

Still stunning in bloom - just not the roses year is it?

Naples, FL(Zone 10b)

Had about 25 people here today from a garden club for a tour. Lot's of oh and ahs and questions I couldn't answer. :-) Mostly everybody asks what is that and what is that etc and I can't remember all the names even if I knew them at one point. I have some labels out there but not nearly enough. Otherwise been working on my orchids on a big repotting project and getting the pond in shape - too much algae. Too much work everywhere.

Texasbigleaves, did you get your new colocasia from Brian Williams?

Candela, your brunfelsia is stealing the show. Is it a americana?
RJ, I did plant my new alocasia in the greenhouse. It is on the droopy side right now, but I bet it will perk-up soon.

I know what ya mean Fred.
I have more tours of the garden this weekend. I was telling Rita and the boys the only way I know alot of the names of plants is because my friend Wayne at Zone9 doesn't know the common names of plants..so after about 10 times of trying to describe it to him, and 10 times of him saying the scientific names- I start remembering them out of the need to communicate..LOL.

Iris is very beautiful. Particularly like that when they are by themselves!

I see more cool weather headed to Texas this next week. Christi, did you order nice weather for next weekend????!

Looks like an errant (amaryllis?) got into the same container as the crinum.

How pretty! Have you ever planted a forced Amarillis in the ground? I'm still wondering what to do with mine now that's it's done with flowering...

New Iberia, LA(Zone 9a)

robcorreia, i'm so glad you asked. can y'all tell me what you do with your amaryllis bulbs once their done blooming? leave them in the ground or yank 'em out?

San Diego, CA(Zone 10b)

MIne are still in the pot, I cut the stems short and put it in filtered sun....I'd like to plant it in the ground....

Miami, FL(Zone 10a)

i am not sure of the name of he brunfelsia all i know is i have two of them. one they called lady of the night and the other princess of the night. absolutely intoxicating at night. this is the princess it only has one flower now. the flower is alot whiter than the lady which has almost a cream color.

shadow paige i love the iris it looks so delicate.

I think it's the Americana..I think Rita thinks so too.

I have permanent Amaryllis in the ground...and these..I leave in pots..when they bloom - I put them on the deck, when there done, I have a non blooming plant shelf where out of season plants sit for most of the year until they bloom.

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

These have been in this same spot for about 5 years. South side of the house. The bloom and then multiply like crazy. Absolutely no care whatever.

Have another bed that I have lined with them and they are all loaded with scapes now but haven't bloomed yet. Same bunch but the others are not protected like these are. They are not hurt by the cold, they just bloom a few days later. Some of them are slightly different as they were "forced" at different times and weren't the same variety as the others. Less trouble than an iris.

Christi
Oh Randy, DeSoto caught part of the tornado night before last.
Thankfully we were on the other side of town this time. Yesterday and today are just perfect. With my luck, it will rain all next weekend. Hope not.

what is up with the weather anyway..I'm just watching snow fall reports for the midwest, blizzard warnings...
The weather never made here yesterday, just the edge of the front that dropped the temperature from 80 to 63 in about a minute, and then the temp went right back up for a pleasant 71F for overnight low...I see we have 50's and high 40's forecasted for the next few nights..one thing is for sure..I'm bringing a coat next weekend!

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Hey Rita,
that Butterfly hatched today- remember the crysalis - plural on the deck rail...one of them hatched. I have that milk weed, and there's a small butterfly factory in progress!

Rj, lucky you, I love butterflys, cannot wait for them to come to my yard. No telling what else you will find in your jungle. Right now, I have rabbits and I do not want them here. My little dog loves to chase them right through my flower beds.
