Tropical garden #8
Hetty,
how come your plumeria are all blooming when mine are still sticks in the ground? What do you do, talk to them gently every day? My big ones mainly serve as hangers for the vandas. :-)
I dodn't know if it was here or in some other forum where the moses-in-the-cradle (etc) plants were mentioned. I have them everywhere like in my rock wall, in the trees, basically they spread tp whereever there may be some water available.
Fred
Fred it is my theory that one or two degrees warmer can make a huge difference.
There are five large plumeria trees along the beach by one of the big hotels. Each year they are the very first to bloom.
Mine are a close second but a tad farther inland you probably have cooler nights still and so your plumies are waiting patiently....
I have about a dozen plants in bloom and one or two more opening up every day
I LOVE SPRING!
My road trip to Houston on Saturday with the boys was very exciting. I was still excited and very tired at 10 pm last night.
The highlight of the trip was meeting Randy. He is so pleasant, handsome and very knowlegable about his plants.
I saw the tree fern in his yard, and I have to say that the pictures do not do it justice. It is really huge, but I was unable to get the full size in one shot. Most of my pictures are blurry.
We visited several very good nurseries. We went wild at Zone 9, the owners were very accomodating. They took the time to tell us the names and all the important growing requirements of their plants. We found so many rare, beautiful, healthy plants at their nursery. I would recommend Zone 9 to anyone.
Thank you again RJ, for taking the time to show us around Houston and sharing your garden with us.
What a great lookin' bunch! How lucky y'all are to get to tour THE garden. Soooo....what did y'all buy?
Placenciarita, You have D=Mail
ashleykelly, I bought a lot of new and unusual ginger plants. I am planning to research all of them before I put them into their new home.I bought one very large alocasia argentea, and rare flowering tropicals. I had to leave quite a few behind becauses there was no more room in the vehicle.
My favorite plant was given to me by Rj.
How do you keep your heliconia in bounds - do you trim often or? I had one but it got so big and would not stay in the place I had for it... I knew better they are huge down in Latin America but thought in a pot they would be smaller here.
Hi Mitch, I have my heliconia growing in a big iron pot, where I can keep the soil wet and be able to bring it inside in the winter. I usually give it a trim after a storm or strong wind because of broken leaves.
I bought a new dwarf heliconia from Noveltg Gardens in Hawaii and will give it a try this year.
mitch i have 4 different heliconias the ones above are in the back of the yard where i have quite a lot of room for them to spread. they are huge though. i do have to cut back the dead leaves and plants about twice a year. the lobster claws i have int the front i will have to keep an eye on spreading. i plan on just digging up the outer plants to give away once they spread to far. i had to tie them up because the winds knocked a few over.
Candela, I always have a tinge of envy when I see your beautiful garden, then you say the dreaded word "hurricane" and I come back to reallity. We are under sotrm watch today with high winds and hail. Can really make a mess but not like "Katrina". Will pray that you stay safe.
LouC
Thank you candela - sounds like you have a real plan there - when that lobster claw gets to big let me know and maybe I can get you something in trade for a piece of that one... love adding new things.
Does anyone know how much sun this EE can take? The leaves are shiny, very thin & delicate. This is the 6th flower in about as many weeks. I moved it about a month ago. There are about a dozen new plants coming up in the original spot. At first I was transplanting them to the shady spot, but now I am having trouble keeping up. I can just wait & see, but I would hate it if they fried. Any thoughts? Thanks.
Terichris, my EE hates the sun...I have it in a pot and whatever part is hit by sun ends up with burnt edges...I keep turning the pot! lol
terichris,
I had one last year that could handle around 50% direct sun. and it reached 4-5ft. I would defiantly ease it into the sun though.
Thanks. I haven't planted them, they are volunteers that are just springing up throughout the other plants. Hopefully they are adapting. I can't keep up with transplanting them!
That EE is Alocasia plumbea 'nigra' and it does prefer semi-shade to shade rather than sun. Cool weather knocks them back, then they spring back up when the weather warms, plus little corms sprout too. Here's one that can take more sun:

Makes sense, mine is the black one.
I'm behind the times...hadn't seen the new thread yet!
I had a great time with you guys too Rita..I was smirking though when I left Zone9 and ya'll were hauling plant after plant out of the hot house...that was a "plant frenzy"
But ya know...that's my rule..if ya see it...like it...and haven't seen them for sale anywhere else..then get em!
More crinums opening!
RJ - that is a crinum! Makes my simple pink, white, and mixed color ones look so plain and simple.
