Whats blooming outside your door

Snohomish, WA

Mine says salix caprea, and should get 8-10'.I'll take a pic tommorow.

gordon, what is that fabulous flower!!
Shokami, that looks like our native marsh violet - the yellow one. Viola nuttalli.
Also, I love that Geum! It is way ahead of mine. I don't have that variety,, but none of mine are looking like they feel like flowering yet.
Yep, the yellow leaf is a new leaf on that bergenia. I hope it retains the yellow color for awhile as it grows. I'm not always fond of yellow leaves as I think some of them look rather anemic. But this is a stunner!

Coos Bay, OR(Zone 8a)

thanks pixy... that geum is kind of a specialty one... also have another one (will have to look at the tag) that is bright orange. doesnt seem to be as good a grower as the mango lassi but it might be where i have it too.

Richmond B.C., Canada

Besides the usual culprits, :), tulips and daffodils, my Jack Frost brunnera has been blossoming for close to 3 weeks and, in spite of our unusually long, wet, cold winter here, my pincushion flower bloomed right though the winter and is still blossoming!

Coos Bay, OR(Zone 8a)

pixy......... the other geum is "cooky" that has really bright orange flowers. tough little buggers arent they fire! lol

Dallas, OR(Zone 8a)

These Anemones opened up today. I have never seen them so big. Guess they are happy!

Pixy - I am seeing Mango Lassi more in the nurseries. Some of the Geums are a bit boring, and I've had a couple that just melted in the winter - planted right by ML.
This one is a fabulous performer - if it had a scent I think it would be creamsicle.
If you want I can pick one up at Wells for you. (1gal)

oh nice, it is nice to look outside and see things bursting, or ready to .... I am so looking forward to the weekend weather, I'm saving my weeding for Saturday.

Dallas, OR(Zone 8a)

Don't forget your sun screen & hat!! Latest update could get as high as 76 Deg. Happy weeding..I will be doing the same!

Livermore, CA(Zone 9b)

if it gets up to 76 I will WEEP with happiness!!!!!!!

Moscow, ID(Zone 5a)

If it doesn't rain i will weep joyfully & lay prostrate on the lawn in celebration of all things that want to grow. Then I will dutifully resign myself to Wisteria whacking...

Coos Bay, OR(Zone 8a)

oh my goodness...... we actually had a beautiful day for once!!! i was outside all day, playing in the yard, went plant hunting on less travelled roads and came back with i hope will be some great starts, beautiful flowers. i had seprated a big wad of this reed type grass that had been in a pot over a year and planted that all up and got 50 plants i hope to trade or sell. happy happy joy joy :)

Oh, if you guys get up to 76 degrees I'm going to call my daughter in Salem and enjoy it vicareously over the phone! I will be stunned into silent joy if we hit 65! I will be with Kayte weeping tears of relief and gladness, lying prostrate on my grass singing praises to the weather gods who are smiling on us at last!

beehive, please tell me about the soil in which your jacob's ladder is planted. I had one that grew and grew at my last house. Any that I've planted at this house have simply languished. I don't know what gives. They are planted under a birch tree in really nice rich soil but the drainage is only 'good enough', not great. But my liles do fine in that bed and don't rot over the winter. (That's my standard of measure, you know.) Might that be the problem? It gets filtered sun.

Dallas, OR(Zone 8a)

Pixydish, Can't be much help. This is the first Jacobs Ladder I have ever had. Thought it was pretty when I saw it at the nursery this week. I have had it only four days..so far so good. I did plant it
on the shadiest side of my property (some sun) ..with astilbe, hostas and the like.
The soil on my property is heavy clay, horrible drainage so it takes a lot of prep before planting. I have added truck loads of compost and soil conditioner at the beginning of my landscaping (new home 18 months ago..with no landscaping) . When I am ready to plant new things, I do it over again. More compost & soil conditioner!
The tag that comes with the plant shows sun/ partial shad & well drained soil. Hard to do in this neck of the woods. I hope it survives and that maybe you give it another try. It is a darling plant!

Port Angeles, WA(Zone 8b)

Okay...it's 7:15 am and it's already 40 degrees outside. It's cloudy, yes, but it doesn't look rainy cloudy, just marine cloudy. And, if I am to believe my Weather Channel desktop, it will not rain for the next two days. I personally am a believer. So today we will dig and plant and dig and plant and dance with my face up to the sun and thank the garden faeries and weather gods and maybe get some pictures of more stuff blooming. C'mon everyone...let's get outside! What are we waiting for? Oh yeah...coffee ~ ^_^

Dallas, OR(Zone 8a)

Only 34 deg here so far. Even a light frost this morning. But the sun is up and high of 68 today expected. Sure hope so... Working on the second cup of coffee & waiting for a delivery..then it out we go!
Yeah! Have a great day!

Livermore, CA(Zone 9b)

... ha ha ha it IS beautiful out !!! I hope I see people out laying on their lawns today !

Coos Bay, OR(Zone 8a)

Dallas, OR(Zone 8a)

Hi oneanjl.. The weather got better as the day went on up here. Was sunny and in the high 60's. Sorry about heat wave down in the bay area. I remember those days vewry well.. crank on the AC!!
My godmother was just telling me yesterday that it was cold in Sunnyvale!! Crazy weather... We have at least two more days of sunshine until the rain is back. :(
Find some shade and enjoy your weekend. I hope to go to the Tulip festival on Sunday..supposed to be fantastic...

(AnjL) Fremont, CA(Zone 9b)

we are having a tulip festival in Oakland as well, but if its hot... I'm staying home!
My DH installs AC's for a living...you would THINK I would have one too! NOT! :oD

I'll take 60's over 80's anyday! lol!

Enjoy your weather while its nice.... I'm just hoping the babies I transplanted last week arent too confused! lol!

It was a lovely day, though warm only in the middle of it. I have been out in the yard a little bit only, because my dog had surgery on Monday and has to be monitored to make sure he doesn't scratch. I could put a cone head collar on him, but he hates it, and I don't want to do that to him until next week when I'll be at work all day. So I've had short forays out to weed a patch at a time while he was napping, and one handed when he is out with me for a bit, as I hold onto the dog's leash with the other hand.

I did get a picture of this little perennial whose name I can't remember. It's an easy, low spreader with fleshy little leaves. if anybody knows its name, please inform me of it. just beginning to open up a few flowers:

I have seen some great photos so far! You gardeners rock!! I got to post some new picks tommorow. This has been a great thread and I have seen a few plants I got to have now. Keep them coming!!

Anjl you are nuts!! 60s over 80s? I haven't seen 80 degrees since last Sept. I know I have plants, just wish it would warm up a little more so I can see them!!!

(AnjL) Fremont, CA(Zone 9b)

LOL! Like I said.... I'm blowing this hot air your way! I hate the stuff....would take 60* ANY DAY!
I wind up gardening at night with the flood lights on when it gets hot.... have you ever done gardening at night...you know when all the slugs are out and they are dark and you grab them with your bare hand on accident cause you didnt see that slimy thing! then you scream and throw it and stomp on it and eeewww! Lol!

You can all start blowing that cooler air down this way...please?!

That's a Faerie thicket of Saxifrage, MHF.

Gordon, I have a great plant for you: http://www.rainyside.com/features/plant_gallery/perennials/Aster_novi-belgiiSchoneVonDietlikon.html

It will need a hole about 12" diameter, if you have room for it.

60°F? no problem.
80°F? I think you'd need to peel me off the grass...

And whu is it that weeds are oblivious to adverse weather?
Are they just being irritating, or what?

Poulsbo, WA(Zone 8a)

Maury, tha looks like Saxafras (sp) To me.

Das es guten! Danke!! Aster is not in there yet and it will look perfect on the center of the mound.Just got to make sure it is far enough away from the tertrapanax.Hope that gets big!! I should take an updated pic. Tilly's hosta has leaves, but the rhue from katie looks real bad. Still a little green, and Grandpa said that is all you need. My grandparents were old school advid gardeners. Their victory garden was great. I should drive down to Newport, Or., their old house is still there and see if the new owners would let me get some of their old plants. Does that sound weird? Intresting conversation! "Excuse me . You don't know me , but my grandparents built this house and I was wondering if I could dig a few things up?" lol

OOH, Mauryhill , that is a totally sweet little saxifragi! So cute!

Moscow, ID(Zone 5a)

Gordon - this aster gets tall - normally to 3' & will spread to about 3' in about 3 - 4 years.
Make sure it has room. The Bees will be all over it, and will try to convince you that it is THEIR plant, not yours. Tell them they are required to share!!!

Vashon, WA(Zone 8b)

Thanks everyone, mystery plant now has a name. It is a little sweetie of a plant, and very easy to propagate, just nip off a piece and stick it in moist soil. Therefore, if anyone would like a piece, I'll get one going for you.
Speaking of plants to share, I also have a few plants that have self seeded and can be given away to whomever doesn't mid their prolific nature....agastache (blue-purple flower), allium triquetrum (white flower with green veins), lamb's ear (fuzzy silver-grey leaf). Not sure if I can make the plant swap next week, but if I can I could bring these.

Poulsbo, WA(Zone 8a)

That does sound rather cute Gordon, But then again they just might let you, You may never know, unless you try. I would if someone came to me like that.

And what do you mean, the Hosta has a leaf, and mine are just pushing little nubs up. just not fair, not fair at all. I say. What did you do whisper in its ear. LOL

I have tomorrow off hopefully I might see a surprise or two ^_^
