Wow. Rach - that's awesome. I've only just really focused on the native mahonia this year (probably because of you) - it's beautiful and it's everywhere. I'm looking forward to having a stand large enough to get the fragrance.
Whats blooming outside your door
Hey Rach. Mine are doing well
Thank You
^_^
Glad to hear it Tills. If either of you or anyone else would like more mahonia just let me know :0)
Rachel ~ Your plants are looking so good! I love the hellebore and have loved the bulb bed from the moment I saw it. And the flowering quince with the mahonia is a nice combo. I hope I'm still on the list for mahonia when you're ready to dig it up! I'm with you on the hyacinths...it's about the only open flower in my bulb bed still (though there are a couple that are starting to peek their flower faces out). I like to get on the ground and bury my face in the hyacinths...the smell is heavenly.
I'm with you on burying my face in them, yummy! I have lots of mahonia with your name all over it, whenever you are ready just let me know, until then it will stay in the ground and keeping growing for you:0)
Probably after the planning party when I have an idea where to put it. I have an area that I think I want to try to cultivate "naturally" with native stuff, which would be a great place for it, but I won't know until after input from all you experts! Can't hardly wait! Property layout is done, I just have to section it off and blow up the sections. I plan on having them ready by the 27th to give to all.
Then you might need a ceanothus velutinus and a viburnum trilobum - maybe a physocarpus or two, as well. All great PNW native shrubs . . .
I'll save a ceanothus and a viburnum for you!!
If I get those, I'll probably have to see a doctor and get rid of them! "Well, Sheri...there's good news and bad news. The bad news is you have ceanothus velutinus and viburnum trilobum. The good news is we have a vaccination for it that should clear it right up!" ^_^
* Edited to say: Kathy ~ Don't you have ribes sanguineum as well? Yummy...

Just a note on digging up mahonia and salal they can be hard to transplant. Sometimes it is easier to buy it. Heidi
I have three mahonia that we literally ripped up at Rachels. They did really well at first and for a couple of months, but are struggling a little now. I may end up with only 1 of three - we'll have to see.
Heidi, what is the name of this taller Mahonia so I can specify at the nursery?
I got two mahonia from rachie also and they are doing fine. Maybe to dry a location? One is in the DG garden and the other under a rhodie. Both get evening shade and plenty of water. Thats weird Katie. Are they losing their leaves? The rhue you gace me is about done for. I think it needs some warmer temps!!!!
Gordon - so sorry to hear about the rhus. Mine isn't looking that great, but I'm going to give it the summer. It's still pretty young to be dealing with these temperature shifts.
My Mahonia looks like it's hanging in there - but only one of the three is blooming. They haven't lost any leaves yet. And we literally did rip it out with out much root support. The spot isn't getting hot sun (but what is, lately?). I thought I'd get it in here and let it get some roots and then move it to a hotter, dryer spot. I'm not giving up. And if it doesn't make it, I'm gonna look for some more of that variety.
I have lots of the lower, green, understory variety - but it's just not as flashy as this is!!
Oh, and Sheri - Yes, I do think I have a ribes sangineum for you. Must get it into better soil and see if it leaps.
The taller kinds of Mahonia is the vareity chariety, and underway are the most popular. These can get 10 feet tall. Heidi
Rachel, that Hellebore is one of the most beautiful I have ever seen! Looks like you are quite the gardener - great ideas and great flower beds!
Thanks for the compliments Carole, I love "Party Dress" she is just so cute and fun!
Did you get the Hellebore "Party Dress" in a nursery or catalog? Would love to find some of the ones they have on the Perennial-Hellebore forum.
I bought it from Naylor Creek Nursery at the PNW Flower and Garden Show. I just looked at their website and they don't have it listed. They do have some beauties though! I did see it at the Bark and Garden Center in Olympia earlier this year. http://www.barkandgarden.com/index.html You may want to give them a call to see if they still have her.
Bea, you are too funny. And I have to say that I love your pulmonaria. I have one and may get more seedlings. At Dunn Gardens they were everywhere and I love to see them massed like that. Okay, well, I love to see anything massed, really.
So, thanks, Heidi. Charity . . . and they can get 10 feet tall. Rachel's must be getting close to that. Her stand is really awesome.
Thanks for the link to Naylor Creek, Rach. I think that's where Jim is going to have some Hosta's for sale in 2009 . . . Your Party Dress Girl is pretty cute.
I have ordered from there. Heidi gave me their addy and they have a brunnera called 'Silver Wings'. It isn't big yet but diffrent from 'Jack Frost' and 'Looking Glass'.I mostly got arisaemas though.
That silver wings is really nice. You'll have to let us all know how well it does for you-in other words, pictures, please!
Bea...where DID you get that Peony 'Newsprint'? She's really nice. I love the contrasting colors. What a find!
Newsprint peony was raised from seed..of course! Rare and very hard to find. Very challenging to germinate..but was successful this
time! 34 deg this morning! Yuck!
We are at 35 and it's been snowing since 6:30 just now starting to stick to the grass. So glad it didn't freeze, thank you to the fairies!
No snow here so far, but it sure looks like there's some out there someplace. No frost overnight, either. Going to be cold tonight again, though. This is not fun!!
Bea, I've got a related species....Peonie "Towel'.. very fluffy and fringy..... ;)
Thank you fairies! Only 34 but the snow is falling off the trees and hopefully didn't do too much damage in the yard!
Oh you guys, I didn't even think to cover my Peonie...Uh Oh...I hope it does well, it has a nice blanket of bark and has been there for 8 years...I hope it will be ok!
I am more worried about the banana canna I potted up in the green house...
A very, very light dusting here and not over the entire property. Seems most of it fell right on the potager beds!?!? Overcast but light here today and currently 35. Everything that has been outside for a while appears fine so far. Too bad the frost doesn't kill all the garbage growing out there!
Question. . .is this salmonberry?
Looks like red flowering currant.
susybell. The peonie towel is a stunning one! Where is the picture? You should see my "white bed sheet" spinach & lettuce.(no picture ..yucky outside!) They are beauties! Weathers been crazy today. Had a light dusting of snow very early this morning. Went to the Culinary Institute in Portland this morning and weather was OK there. Came back to town and I guess we had a lot of hail while I was gone. Now it is rain/snow slushy mess. Sure a change from the high 70's temps recently.Temp 39
Enough of this already! Bring on the sunshine!!! I have a ton of plants
finally arriving next week. I would hate them all to die with this crazy
weather.
My diamond collection in lupines
Outta, I believe that pink bloom in your photo is a salmonberry. Flowering currant is more in drooping clusters. I think they are both in bloom now. Salmonberry comes up in clusters of canes, kind of like raspberry. Flowering currant grows into a large, spreading shrub. That is another way to tell which one it might be.
Holly ~ Thanks. Didn't think it was currant as there is one at work that I absolutely love. I originally thought this was blackberry and was going to rip it out but Pixy said it may be salmonberry. Posted the picture to make sure, but after researching on the web and in my Robson book, definitely salmonberry.
Hi Bea,
Diamond Lupines, a girls' best friend??? Lovely photo!
As soon as it stops snowing, I'll try to get out and get a picture of my Peony 'Towel' for you. I think it's just a squall-I hope!
Oooh, 'white bed sheet' lettuce-a very delicate variety, I hear.
Hey all from Oregon what to pop over here.
Some other Oregon DGers have just joined us.
