hmmm. Maybe we have to start getting a better class of takeout - most of ours comes in paper cartons. ^_^
(and no meat comes into this house...)
pretty flowers, allison!
what have you bought so far? part 4
No meat leaves this one.
yikes.
should the kitties be worried?
Depends how hungry I am. I love dripping red meat for breakfast...
Victor-In the 2 1/2 whiskey barrels I have 5 dahlias in each one, they are planted on the furthest point of an "X" shape. They are supposed to be the "mini" dahlias at/around 3' or so.
The elephant ears are starting to finally show some top growth, the one I was sure about from Buried Treasures, is already sending up it's first set of leaves...2 so far...I know that most Elephant ears, more the Calocasias than the Alocasias can be winter hardy to z7, so what I might start to do, is pur them out on the front porch. The larger bulbs that I have of the elephant ears have been sending roots out like crazy, but no top growth yet. The smaller elephant ears, 'Black Magic' 'Tea Cups' and 'Hilo Beauty' are starting to send tips up, as of right now, LOTS of roots.
At the end of the season I'm going to really need to thin out all of the elephant ears, this batch of the large elephant ears stems from one mother bulb, and these are all of the off sets from the last several years...I really only need/want 2, and have more than 6, which means this year that number may quadruple.
I liked the torenia--nice cheerful flower--I grew the dark purple one year for my east border---when the shade moved into the garden, the torenia kinda disappeared-the next year I used white wax begonia & that stood out--now my dwarf rhodos & hosta are so large, I can't plant anything there. Today saw some jazzy pansies--lots of orange in them, planted by someone's mailbox. Hope I can plant some before we get the 5 days of showers they predicted today!
It's way too early to put the pansies out here, but I love to put them out when it's a bit warmer. They are such cheerful creatures!
It's Christmas in APRIL...WoooHooooo
I got a few orders in today!
I received orders from:
Gardensoyvey- Agave 'Spot'
1st lilyauction win- H. 'Aerial Applique'
PlantsDelight-Colocasia 'Nancys Revenge'
Canna 'Musafolia'
Canna 'Phaison'
Colocasia 'Diamond Head'
Logee's- 2xColocasia gigantea
Buried Treasures (second time around)-2-Xanthosomoa sp. Suapaan
Maranta a. variegata
Hymenocallis l. variegata
Colocasia e. 'Black Magic'
Alocasia Maechang
Congrats, Thom!
Wow, what big ears, Grandma!
Plants Delight, this was my first time ordering from them...I don't know what I was thinking! I will definitely order from them again, I feel like an adversitesment, BUT...2 of the Colocasias I ordered from them are new cultivars for this year...which meant (to me atleast) I was going to get smaller sized stumps, and wait until next year for my personal "WOW" factor, COULD NOT have been any further from the truth...
Here are: Colocasia 'Diamon Head' Colocasia 'Nancy's Revenge' Canna 'Phaison' and Canna 'Musafolia'
Again, for a contrast, these are taken next to a 2-gallon water can.
Ha ha - they look to bending toward the light of the reflective band of the shoes!!^_^
This was also my first order from Gardens Oyvey...1st-their communication with me was out of this world...they must have emailed me atleast 3-4 different times!!! They were worried I was going to be upset if I didn't get Agave 'Spot' for the date(s) that I had listed...because, it HAD NOT broken dormancy. This says a lot about Diane and Wolfgang!
Here is Agave 'Spot'
For comparison, taken next to a pair of ordinary cutting scissors...THE roots on this thing are HUGE.
Victor-they do...lol. With that order, from Plants Delight, I opened the box, and looked at the wrapping, and saw the 'ears' sticking out, and was like, HOLY >&$#, again, the Pug was blushing...I'm so giddy with excitement!
For all of you DL peeps, and lilyauctineerers (not sure if that is a word or not), this is my first win (not first win, but first arrival) from the lilyauction. The sellers name is: Ytrn
This was for 'Aerial Applique.' For 1, ONE, fan. Count with me people...lol...I should, if Ma Nature works with me, have bloom(s) this year!
Is that a hardy agave, Thom? (I miss the watering can.)
Victor-Thanks for asking!!! Double WOOHOO...it's hardy from z6-9. Which means, I can cheat death...yeah. It has to do with the side of my house, furnace is really close to, and gets full sun! Here is the link to Terra Nova:
http://www.terranovanurseries.com/wholesale/modules.php?name=Content&pa=showpage&pid=199
I hope the link works. It was an Agave that I've been/was looking for all over the place. Not everyone has/had it. And those who do/did have it were out of it, except for Gardens Oyvey! I was actually going to treat it like an expensive annual, dig it out store it, or try to winter it over in the house! Thanks again for asking me that question!
Just purchased the single most expensive tree I have ever bought. The addition is a new Japanese Maple called "Shirazz". I heard about this tree on a gardening radio show (Paul Parent) over the winter and did some limited investigation. There was not much to find since it is a brand new introduction from New Zealand. For anyone interested there is a tread on it in the JP Forum. No pictures yet of it leafed out. Suppose to put the tri-color beech tree to shame. I have both now so it will be interesting to compare.
schickenlady here is your link - http://www.novalis.com/PlantsThatWork/PlantDetails.aspx?PlantID=100909&PlantGroup=Exclusives&PlantGroupID=
These are the only folks that sell it to nurserys. so you will need to call around to see if it is available. And from the chatter it appears each nursery is only getting five trees. I looked in southern NH near my town with no luck. So I paid our mass state tax on a tree today.
Funny with the whaaaaa - It's Bill.
Looks like virgin soil with lots of opportunity. Be careful on what you do it also looks to be a pontential diner for deer!
There is a page on the site I gave you that shows which nursery's they sell too. I think it has a 50 mile radius of your zip code. I pretty much know all the nursery's around me and started calling them. Mahoney's in Winchester, MA was where I found it.
Does the s before chicken lady stand for something?
Ok...I think I may have a new "HAVE TO HAVE"
Victor, are you with me on this one? lol
I've already called 3 nurseries/garden centers in the area...so far...no one has a clue as to what I'm talking about.
Almost certainly, Thom! How did you find out about it, Bill?
Sherri--you will have fun filling in that yard--I like nine bark, but don't know if that's hardy in NH----river birch, thundercloud plum, star magnolia, shadbush. the only thing I bought today was 2 boxes of pansies--antique shades, & tomorrow they go under the mailbox. I always enjoyed seeing flowers by the box when I delivered. Just didn't like the bees--they weren't on the flowers, but building nests in the boxes & I was stung every year--then there were the spiders--ugh!
Gee, Bill. That is one pretty little tree. Wish I had a place for it.
Thom, looks like you are getting inundated with shipments all coming at once. It's Plantin' Time! the plants look great :)
That's a pretty big one - 15 x 15-18.
sigh. i just ordered seeds. Like i know what to do with the ones i've got! But i am so afraid i won't find the Silver Lace Dusty Miller i grew and loved last year, so when i found seeds online, i jumped. And then, since shipping was $5 for orders up to $15, i had to get some other things. So i got some kind of pink gazanias, and some rose colored flat zinnias, neither of which i've seen in stores not in mixes. (i planted mixed gazanias last year, and of the 4 that neither i nor the wildlife killed, EVERY one was yellow and orange, the combo i'd pick last.)
i like being able to pick the color of what i am getting. (i don't like multi-colored Xmas lights either. But the silver lace seeds are 100 per pack (good heavens!) so i think i'll be able to share.
Very nice! Reminds me of a snowflake.
i'll be happy to send you some seeds, Victor!
i haven't seen the seeds in any store this year, and i saw the plants maybe twice last year. i like them so much better than the other kinds of dusty miller.
Thanks - I would appreciate that!
Hemhostaholic and Victor,
I have a soft spot for JP's. As I mentioned above I heard about Shirazz on a sunday morning radio show driving to play volleyball. It got rave reviews from the only grower who is distributing to nurseries. The radio show is one by Paul Parent who lives up in Maine. People form Maine you can trust and Paul in particular.
Got home hit the web, saw it in the JP forum, had to have it. Some of the people (maybe one) on the jp forum seem to be pretty negative about certain varieties so I did wait for one of our members (a landscaper) who bought 4 or 5 last year and see how they made it through the winter. All came through with flying colors although had not leafed out yet. I jumped on it now because if it was as advertised it would have been sold out. The nursey I went to is in an affluent area the price $250 was less than some crimson queens.
Here's a picture of my stick. I'll post a picture once it leafs out on the jp forum.
A little long winded---I excited to have it! Yesterday I went to opening day and ring ceramony for the Sox. So far April is going good.
How tall is it, Bill? Hard to tell from the pic. There are some very opinionated people on the JM forum. I don't visit it much. What did you mean, 'members'?
It is between 4-5 ft.tall and it is not growing side ways. Was straight in my cannon zoom browser vista is not so friendly. If you read the Shirazz thread it is pretty obvious. David is his name myshief or something close is his call name. He really has something against coral bark JP's and likes to capital letter a lot from a glass half empty point of view.
Hoosiergreen is the guy that purchased last year and has given it he blessing.
Thanks.
I'm going to go scouting for it this weekend, I'm aslo picking up the Oxydendrum this weekend, so maybe the nursery I'm picking the Oxydendrum up at will have Shirazz...two birds, one stone...one check...lol.
I don't mind being inundated with things, it's almost easier...I can get everything unwrapped and potted up in one shot, as opposed to doing a little here, and a little there. I have everything potted up from todays order except for the Avage, the DL, and the reshipment from Buried Treasures...I need to buy more of those .88c pots from WalMart! The good thing about the reship from BT, is that almost everything has broken dormancy, which means I know what end to plant up. I know with geotropism in some things it really doesn't matter, but I wouldn't want to plant a $10 bulb upside down...lol.
I will be getting hit and miss deliveries over the next 2-3 weeks; a majority of the lilyauction items I won will be getting delivered...I almost feel bad for the postman...lol. Paul suggested that we leave him/her a great xmas gift this year.
Well, if you're going to WalMart, don't forget to look for my Disco Mix (http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/818259/). i still need about 8 more...
