what have you bought so far? part 4

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

No, I love them!

Thomaston, CT

Great plant selections from everyone--GE, I like that you have a lilac garden--I know Rochester has the lilac festival every year, But I'm usually at my niece's house in Aug. I never heard of Forest Farm Nursery, & I'm sorry you showed me plant pics from there--now I MUST log into their site--oh, well, what's a few more plants.

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

Lots of great lists of plants coming soon. Got a delivery from local nursery I help keep in business. Seven thuja plicata 'Excelsa' and one 'Baby Blue Eyes' colorado spruce. Now if only the weather would get with the whole "it's spring" thing I can get some stuff planted.

Wheatfield, NY(Zone 6a)

pirl, I wouldn't have any trouble fitting those plants right into my garden. nice choices :0)

ngam, that's alotta planting

Pixie, thanks for the vote of confidence on the blueberries. It was a gorgeous day here today. I started out digging to plant them, but spent so much time pulling out 4' roots of dang-I-forgot-the-name-of-it weed that I didn't have the energy to plant the bushes.

I did get some cleanup done and pruned some roses, lots more to do. I should look and see when my next delivery is due.

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

Well if the sun was out there today I hope it will be out here tomorrow. Sounds like you got a lot of work done. I am going to get DH to help with the new trees, they are too heavy for me to move around even with a two wheeler. The blue spruce is really pretty, I hope it lives. I will get a pic of them tomorrow.

Jersey Shore, NJ(Zone 7a)

Hmmmm....I got two earlier than desired deliveries. One from J&P, the other from Dutch Gardens. Pirl and I are in the same zone so I guess we're getting the same too early deliveries. I got SI,JI, DL and dahlias delivered. The proposed bed they were going to be planted in was not ready, so I top dressed with about 8 inches of compost(really fast) and I will hope for the best. It is a tad irritating!!

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

I agree. More than a tad irritating but this is a family site.

Who sent JI's this early. I'd love to order from them!

Brentwood, NY(Zone 6b)

Well, the weather wasn't exactly wam and sunny by me but I did get the spring cleanup done in my front yard after I got home from work today. I'm very excited even though I didn't get to do any planting. Only two dead perennials - the one rhododendron that I knew I'd accidentally killed last year, the other is blooming already, and the one of my Silver Mound Wormwoods. It might not have been dead but the other one already had new growth on it, plus I had decided I wanted to put some more daylilies where the possibly dead one was which worked out fine with me. The daylilies I planted last year have started sending up leaves. Some of my hostas are just breaking the surface, most of them I put a little bit more dirt over them so they'd be protected a little longer. The Pink Heath are blooming. The Dianthus that I hadn't realized were perennials when I planted them are doing well. I think my tall phlox are putting up sprouts, not sure what they look like in the early stages but the leaves are in the right place and they didn't match any of the weeds I pulled so I left them. And *AND* while yanking some weeds I discovered that at least two of the glad bulbs I accidentally left in the ground last year have begun sprouting! I'm very excited. Now hopefully this coming weekend will be sunny and warm so I can beging planting some of my bare root plants outside.

Jersey Shore, NJ(Zone 7a)

The JIs came from Dutch Gardens. The SIs and DLs came from J&P.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

LI - You accomplished a lot on a nasty day - congratulations. Let's hope we can all plant very soon.

Louise - thanks. I did order mine from Dutch Gardens. I thought maybe someone else was actually shipping in April. Now I feel better.

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

Here is a pic of the new arrivals. Sun seems to be trying to put in an appearance finally. Hope to get these planted this week. Spruce should be brighter during growing season. Site seems very slow today.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

He's implementing new servers today i believe so it will be slow until fixed.

Nice ngam!!!!!

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

Got emails that two orders are being shipped. The last thing from Sooner, a viburnum 'Raspberry Tart'. Also Dutch Gardens order is being shipped: 'Dark Towers' penstemon, ostrich ferns and a 'Tiki Torch' echinacea. Don't know if they will all arrive, this was a late order and the echinacea was already back ordered from the Garden Crossing order.

Thomaston, CT

I hope my Dutch Gardens doesn't come for another 2 weeks or so--I just took the mulch off the beds, & I don't know what I lost, or is slow breaking dormancy. Received my catalog from Commanche Iris today---I ordered from them for the 1st time last fall---I'd like to wait to see what is blooming before I order again, but don't want my picks to be sold out--they have some very eye-catching combos.

Kershaw, SC(Zone 8b)

I've gotten all of my dahlias in...I went a little nuts with them. What I'm intending is to cover the large area of the bed that I'm creating, so it looks full, with the Dahlias, and then in the fall plant a mass of peonies where the Dahlias were.
I'm getting my Logee, Buried Treasure, several DL's from the lilyauction, GardensOyVey, and Plant Delights orders this week! I will be one busy person.
This all falls on top of me applying for another job, different nursing home-better pay-lower cost for benefits, and orientation at the new facility.
crazy, crazy, and crazy...

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Might be the right time to write that novel, Thom.

Kershaw, SC(Zone 8b)

I'm on my 2nd cube of ProMix already!

Gonna have to...

Lowell, MA(Zone 6a)

Hem are you starting your Dhalias inside?
I potted mine in pots inside last Friday and today I came home to find that one of the pots is already sprouting. :~}
My window area looks like a mad house!

Kershaw, SC(Zone 8b)

Yes, I started them almost as soon as I got them. They arrived in the mail within the last 3-4 days, and I just finished potting them up. My house is always, always super arid, I was afraid of letting them in the house, and trying to mist them...so I potted all of them up. I used a cheap 8" pot from WalMart, they are .88c each, I damped the ProMix BX, and just potted them up. To give everyone a guesstimate on how much ProMix, 1 cube will cover...in case you aren't familiar with the product, the 2 1/2 whiskey barrel planters, all of the 8" plastic pots, 3 hanging baskets, and about 20 4-6" pots where filled up by one cube...I needed the extra cube to top off the elephant ears that I have.
Here's a new pic of the staging area...

Wow! What's planted in the whiskey barrels?

belleville, NJ(Zone 6a)

airplane bottles of Jack Daniels.

belleville, NJ(Zone 6a)

Sorry, couldn't resist.
i broke down and went to the nursery today and bought a bale of ProMix but a different brand. Yikes. $27.99. And it is HUGE!
(You should have seen the look on the nursery guy's face when i asked him if, because he kept saying how compressed it was, i needed to be careful opening it. Well, i didn't think it was going to blow up like a volcano, more like Poppin' Fresh rolls.)
i am going to late "winter sow" some seeds in the 2 juice bottles i had tomorrow, and i am scavenging for other appropriate containers. (It seems we don't drink the right things...)
o, i also bought a little 6 pack of Sorbet Coconut Twist violas - so cute, and they are blooming. ($2.49) And a packet of Pennyblack seeds. Hey, not a single one came up last year, why not do it again..?

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

I haven't tried the bales yet.... guess i should there seems to be a lot of you guys that use them

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Bales are the cheaper way to go.....I only paid between $17- $21 for a bale last year, hope they haven't gone up that much!!

Amy....don't you buy hamburger? Or ever get take out?? Save the containers. Here look..... this one is a large hamburger container, it has Delphiniums growing in the house on the windowsill. (not a great pix but you get the idea)

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

my honey brings me home Chinese food containers like that from work..... they are perfect for seed starting

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

great minds think alike..... i have some night & day started .... they are very pretty

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

I thought they were so unique I had to have them....also had to have "Candy Corn' and 'Montego" snapdragons too! LOL

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

I also did the candy corn ... the kim bicolor got me too.... and a few others

I sorted my journal by name so they are all together towards the top ... somewhat

http://davesgarden.com/community/journals/vbc/onewish1/58432/name3/

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Good grief woman! What are you going to do with all of those plants???? Have you a greenhouse? If not you must of WS alot of it or you won't have much room in your house! LOL

I am really drawn to your 'Wish Bone Flower" where might I fine them?

BTW.....were you the one who outbid on ebay for the "Poached Eggs" seeds?

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

I haven't bought anything on ebay this year... hope that makes you feel better... first year with the wishbone flower

they are from park seed
http://www.parkseed.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/StoreCatalogDisplay?storeId=10101&catalogId=10101&langId=-1&SearchText=2317&mainPage=textsearchresults&RequestType=NewRequest&go.x=0&go.y=0&go=submit

I wish I had a green house... see I don't have kids & extra rooms... as it seems i have taken over every bit of extra space and hate to say this but running out of room in a big way this year... not really sure what got into me this year.. the thought of potting up some of these babies has me worried.... might have to wait to start some of these things later next year

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

New pose for Celeste's hand - and a thumb ring! Do you plant Chinese theme plants in the Chinese container? Guess anything that will go in the 'ground' will be fine for the burger one.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Victor, the thumb ring was there last year too...never take it off. Those are the many gold bands DH supplied me with. I think it was his way of saying I was taken(married) several times over! LOL
No chinese themed plants, but the color is right for Chinese..there are red and white snapdragons in that one.
Yes the Delphiniums will go in the 'ground' too.

Allison, now I really want those seeds.....says great for the shade garden!!!!

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

oh boy Victor you are really stretching this morning... I didn't have much luck with the trailing snapdragon seeds... 4 out of 40 started so far.... but my honeys mom, my mom and i split the plug flat from north carolina farms they look great

Thumbnail by onewish1
Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Morning stretches are a good thing.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

They are already blooming?? Holy Cow!!

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

I will dig through my stash and see if i have any to spare Pix... I had some torenia last year that i bought ... don't want to get your hopes up on the wonder flower of the shade... but they had mixed results... but it was in my side planted baskets too so that might have had something to do with it

these also claim they do well in part shade
http://www.tmseeds.com/product/3107.html

first year trying those.... I know the other monkey flowers that are for the sun did very well being side planted... so I figured I would give these shady ones a try this year... in my coleus basket

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

the petunias are too... if you enlarge the photo they are off to the left.... I would buy these flats again from them... it seemed expensive at first but as long as they want to share them again 100 for $40.00 doesn't really seem that bad now

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

I like the looks of the Monkey flower too....very different!!

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

so easy to grow from seed.... they bloomed most of the summer when I dead headed... they slowed down a bit when it was real hot in august... but picked right back up when the temps got cooler and keep going till frost... love them... they are small but very colorful
