Spring NE Roundup - Saturday June 28th

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

I'll take a bucket - the fingernails will help with the drainage holes. ha ha ha You should know, my nails are always too long and sharp for me. I've been getting in trouble since 6th grade. :-(

Yonkers, NY(Zone 5b)

Cool!
I'll bring up a bunch.
Since I'm not going to have any plants, I wanted to contribute something other than a cake from Mom.
;o)

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

I like cake, and the fingernails will help there too.

Kassia, I used to be able to manage a schedule like that, but I was19!!!! Your spirit is indomitable, and as long as you are present on the 28th, you'll be the mostest hostess!

Wow! Tough schedule. Hang in there buddy!

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

I think you are working too hard, Kassia. Make sure you pace yourself.

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

I don't think I will bother to come, as I am sure Kassia is going to be napping that day, but I should try just so I can poke her to wake up and smell her roses! Patti

Framingham, MA(Zone 6a)

oh, you guys!!!! I miss you so much!!!! I am off from the hospital for 4 days!!!! what a treat!!!!! I was a real nurse yesterday! oh I loved it! give me a patient and all the worries are gone... I love it ! so fun!
I am tired but I am having a lot of fun!!!! I sooo look foward in seeing all of you!!!! right now, all I am doing is really very pleasant! for the first time in my life all that is happening: the old job, the new job, school and gardening are extremelly fun! I am just enjoying every minute, no I am not on drugs! I am just honestly happy and content with life... don't know what is ahead but I am just enjoying life... maybe it took forever to learn how to do that!!!!!

my roses are begining to really grow... the rain we had was really great for them... I have 4 buds already... and some of the miniatures came blooming already! so excited to see them... and Charles Aznavour from Northland Rosarium came with a rose and 3 buds... oh what a treat!!!! great plants from that nursery!!!! the onwer is absolutely adorable! so pleased!!!!

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

good for you Kassia... can't wait to see the photos

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

Kassia:

I hope your days off are not as damp and chilly as the days are here!
You have buds on the roses already? Sheesh! Ours are just beginning to leaf.

Framingham, MA(Zone 6a)

Candyce, today I got 2 big roses at Lowes... can't wait for blooms... I have 2 buds on Lady of Guadalupe and 2 on Outrageous - they were both inside the garage... so if that counts... the others are leafing out ... some more than others...

well, I ended up getting tomatoes from Lowes... I have to go to Greemountain myself if I want anything from there. They are not able to fullfill any orders until august... so I got stuff from lowes... not the kind of tomatoes I want but I learned my lesson... I will order in January next year!!!!

This is the coldest may I can remember... goodness gracious... we are going to go right into summer! I have to plant roses tomorrow... at least it will be wet enough for them...

kassia, I ordered my tomatoes from Green Mt, as well as a bunch of other things. I love their selection and have had great luck with them in the past. I should get my plants this week. Fingers crossed. I have so much to do before I can plant the veggie garden, but the flower beds are in pretty good shape. I am still hoping to come to the RU and I will bring goodies if I do come.

I need to go out in this cold damp weather and plant roses from Chamblee. Not wanting to, but must. As my Grandfather would say, "Despite the poor weather in the morning, go ahead and do what you have planned for the day as it might turn out nice" My mother said she was always going on picnics in the rain! It did her no harm as she is 93. Here is a picture of her last month in New Orleans where she met up with DH and I to visit our DS who is now living there for a few days. We had just polished off a few plates of beignets and coffee at Cafe du Monde. Yummy stuff.

I think I may be planting in the rain. The roses won't care. Patti

Wow!
What a spunky lady! You must be so proud of her.
As for the rain ... I just wish it would go away so that the garden could dry up just a bit. Now I am worried about too much water so early in the season.

Rockport, ME(Zone 5b)

I was on vacation for a week, and lo and behold so many of my babies have come back after all! The rain was a godsend, we really needed it. Some of the un-named orphans from Cheshire Nursery that I got last year have come back, so that's always happy. And I had a lot of fun with my woodchipper today. I think the neighbors are a little sick of it, but I had great fun making mulch! I just hope they don't mind me talking baby talk...."OH, look at you, what a good job, you made it! OH, buds, I see buds on you, yes I do!"

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

I didn't know you had a woodchipper! Is it really fun? We keep saying we'll rent one. I'm glad your babies are doing well.

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

We rented a big chipper for a weekend for a couple of years running and it was deafening and scary. It wasn't particularly easy as we had to haul it behind the truck to move it around to the piles and it couldn't do big tree trunk and then vines (Virginia creeper) got it all fouled up at times. It was fun to throw pumpkins in however. We did manage on chipping a huge amount of stuff. However we were allowed to burn this year which was so much better, more efficient, cheaper, emotionally satisfying plus we got to roast hot dogs. I vote unanimously for fire. But fire isn't so good in a small yard or in the city. Smokey wouldn't like that. Patti

Rockport, ME(Zone 5b)

I have a rather small, manageable electric Yard Man that I bought off TrueValue.com last month that I can haul around the yard all by myself. It needs to be near a plug, so I bring the stuff to it. I only have a third of an acre total, but I do have a lot of trees and of course leaves and twigs. I chipped about three wheelbarrows full of raked junk, and it took me a little over an hour to get through it. The cardboard tray that I use to catch everything is 4" x 18", and it made four of those....enough to mulch my roses and new perennials. The only time it got unhappy was when I inadvertently threw in pebbles over an inch or so big, which is unfortunately easy to do since my soil has a lot of fill....plus this is New England and we grow rocks very well here. I really loved it for my purposes! It's not as noisy as the larger models, which is good since the houses are rather close together.

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

Sounds good drumlin. I could really use one of those. I think I'll check that one out.

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

It DOES sound good, just what DH needs for Fathers' Day! HE says we need to buy a chipper, I say then we need to buy another garage to keep it in and a second husband to maintain it, but if it can be small and run off electricity (like the chainsaw does) then it would be more like another blender and less like another car!

Rockport, ME(Zone 5b)

Exactly why I got an electric and not a gas behemoth. I mean, you do have to be a little dainty about feeding it, and the thickest branch it can do is 1 1/2 inches in diameter, but for general yard junk it's fine.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)
