Spring NE Roundup - Saturday June 28th

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

:-)

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

Does anyone want any oriental poppies - I don't know the colours, but I have 6 that need a home.

Metrowest, MA(Zone 6a)

Michaela,

I would love some. My son (6 years old) has one that he picked up at the garden center last year that is "his plant". He was so proud of it this year when it ended up being one of the first flowers that bloomed in my garden.

Melissa

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Michaela, my jetlag trick is drugs, but that wouldn't work for you. I just adjust my meds schedule to fit where I need to be asleep or awake.

Mid-Cape, MA(Zone 7a)

Quoting:
It's not so much about trading plants as it is about seeing the people we've been conversing with for ages. The plants are just inevitable since we are all gardeners!

Thanks, Harper--I was getting a little nervous 'cause I might not have a lot to bring either. So I'll just come and enjoy the like-minded folks there!

belleville, NJ(Zone 6a)

And there are those of us with loads we are desperate to get rid of!!!
strawflowers (you canNOT believe how many)
liriope
dianthus
coreopsis
basil
oregano
black peppermint

and a LOT of smaller amounts of assorted others, all of which take up too much space!!!

Marlborough, MA(Zone 5b)

Kassia, I neglected to RSVP. I'll be there.
In fact let me know if you want me to come early (being only 3 miles away) and help you get set up.
Chuck

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

dogwalker, We may be traveling with our dogs, do you walk? No, kidding, DH will drop me off for a visit and take them for a run somewhere. DH will want to say hello to Carrie, but I fear he thinks this DG's bunch are causing too much work in the garden for him. No names mentioned. Lots of eye rolling lately. I will bring food and some plants to share but I will wait to figure out what when I can see the weather report. Afterwards, we are driving to Tanglewood to see Garrison Keillor as we do every year. It is great fun, always.

Victor are you coming? If so, I will bring the Jade that I promised you. I normally fly, but I may take the boat with the food and plants and DH can take the plane with the dogs and meet me. They don't love the boat, too many other dogs. Patti

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Patti - I wish we were going to see Garrison with you. We love his shows....always a treat! I look forward to seeing you, your DH and your dogs!!

I agree with those who have said that it makes no difference if people don't bring ANY plants. I don't care if I go home with nothing! I just look forward to the chance to visit in person with some of my favorite people that I've "met" in a long time - AND to see the great results of all of Kassia's hard work in the garden while she is also doing tons of things professionally with her job and school. I won't be bringing a ton of plants - just whatever will fit in the back of the car along with a number of other things that must also fit in. I also have to admit that I've been saving some of my plants for a certain friend who lives near Keene who has kindly invited me for coffee. Tee Hee.

Marlborough, MA(Zone 5b)

Patti - Although I've had dogs for 35 years, we lost our Bassett Hound to cancer last Nov, the "Dogwalker" goes way back. When I was in my early 20's I had a Bassett Hound (what else) and I would take him out every morning. I was into CB radio big time then and a friend of mine would call me and when I didn't answer he would say, "I guess that dogwalker is out again."
Thats where the real name came from.
Chuck

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

Yippie!!

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Pixie, did you start a nursery?

Dogwalker, sorry about your B.hound. Wonderful dogs with huge personalities. Nice handle. Patti

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

No Patti, just have a lot of things that need thinning REALLY bad. LOL

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Next year we should just come to your house with a shovel. I love Maine, before the black flies are out and after. Patti

belleville, NJ(Zone 6a)

i have:
strawflowers (you canNOT believe how many)
liriope
dianthus: firewitch
dianthus: bath's pink
dianthus: the amazing perennial annual dianthus
dianthus seeds (if they come true): sternkissen, tiny rubies (which are pink)
coreopsis: nana
basil: sweet
oregano
black peppermint

and some:
blue anagallis
pennyblacks
cosmos
red basil
dill

and a couple of :
"annual" dahlias
gazania: pink
cupid's dart (maybe the slowest growing thing i've ever tried)

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

My goodness, Celeste and Amy - those are some lists! Are you renting moving vans??? LOL

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Nope but I'm going to pack up my SUV with as much as possible...Momma always said 'If you can't bring enough to share with everyone..don't bring any'. I intend to bring enough!
Actually it makes me feel better to know they are not going to the compost heap! I have so many daylilies that need to be thinned, plants i've had for 4 or more years and have never thinned...if I don't do it they will kill them selfs off anyway. So see this is a blessing to my poor plants!

Rockport, ME(Zone 5b)

I'm going to go out next week and start potting things up. I have Sunset Hyssop seedlings, Artemisia, Butterfly Weed, English Daisy seedlings and probably Rudbeckia and some pretty purple tall Iris. AND VARIGATED HOSTA BY THE TON! Yep, I get the feeling this is something like a pot-luck dinner, which of course is alway fun! And even meatloaf seems more interesting when someone else makes it, so maybe someone will appreciate these hosta!!!

Framingham, MA(Zone 6a)

oh Chuck, I will take you up on your offer...

I am going to need some folding tables and again everyone bring your lawn chairs... I have some new furniture coming but now enough chairs... I have plenty of grass... so picnic blankets should be fine too...
I have 2 dogs that most likely 1 will be inside the house and Lilly is blind so the turtle can be out without a problem... I will have the turtles out in their garden - they will probably hide if they see another dog... but they will be out enough so you guys can see them...

few more days!!!

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Amy, what is black peppermint like? I've only had generic peppermint. If snakes don't like peppermint, I'm wondering if the black snakes make an exception for black peppermint?? LOL

belleville, NJ(Zone 6a)

It smells just like peppermint candy. But it grows like mint. Though i've never had trouble pulling it up when it spreads too far. The stems are black-ish, the leaves are dark green.
Apparently, you aren't supposed to eat it, just smell it.

Shouldn't this RU be posted on the RU forum - at least the sticky on the top? i noticed it wasn't.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

I bleached all the pots I'll be needing for the round up and managed to fill 9 already. I still have all these to fill.....

Oh boy, oh boy, oh boy!

Yonkers, NY(Zone 5b)

Hey everybody!
I'm back from my trip!
Greece & Rome!

I never saw so many balcony gardens overflowing with flowers!
I took over 1000 pics so it'll take me a while to get them U/L to my Flickr acct.

My garden survived. My cousin, Karen, was stopping by each day to take care of my (and Mom's) cat(s).
She watered some of the plants that were looking a bit droopy.
I have a bunch of buckets to bring with me to the RU - and, of course, Mom's cake.
I'm going to see if I can get her to make two.
It's a popular cake & goes fast.
I don't like it 'cuz it has coconut (which I don't like). But whenever she makes it for church or any other gathering, it vanishes.
I'll have to remember to bring copies of the recipe as well.
Now it's off to bed. My body thinks it's about 5am, so I'm waiting so jet-lag won't hit as hard.
I'm good at bouncing back from trips.
Tomorrow I'll be doing laundry, going thru the mail & making amends with my cat - who has been following me around & crying.

Nancy

Framingham, MA(Zone 6a)

oh that's awsome... I want some black peppermint... you guys are going to see that I still have tons of empty places needing plants... anyone that wants to plant anything will have a chance!!!!! so if you want to garden I am open to suggestions!!!!! and I will give you a tag so you can write me a message and put your name on it so I will look at it and be so happy ... and have great memories...

am I abusing you guys if I do that????

Amy, I never posted on the RU forum... I don't actually read that forum... never occured to me to do it... I am such a banana head sometimes...

nancy you are a blessed woman... post pictures when your body wake up!!!!

belleville, NJ(Zone 6a)

All you have to do is send a link to roadrunner here:
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/557555/
Black peppermint can be invasive, but not if you keep an eye on it. It also goes well in pots. Anyone who wants some is welcome to it.
Should we start a RU trade thread separate from this one, so we can plan better what to bring? i think it helped last time...

Framingham, MA(Zone 6a)

Amy feel free to start if that's what everyone wants...
Last year I know some people just labeled the plants that were supposed to go to certain people... and of course Pirl and Celeste sent boxes with plants... so for me it's ok... I think whichever way it works for you guys it works for me!!!!

tomorrow I hope the beds and the clean up will be done!!!! so wonderful!!!! I get to spend the day cleaning and gardening... I have an important guest on Monday!!!! so the garden better look reallyyyyy good!!!!

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Celeste, do you always sterilize or bleach nursery pots before you reuse them?

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Yes, just to be safe, especially if i'm sharing with friends. ^_^

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

I'm such a slacker!

Gardiner, ME(Zone 5a)

I have always run mine thru the dishwasher if I have alot of them.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Thats a good idea! Wish I had dishwasher!!!

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

I could imagine DH if I filled the dishwasher with pots. It is a good idea.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Does it get hot enough to kill funky fungal diseases??

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Not sure about the dishwasher but my bucket of hot bleach water and my trusty scrubbing brush does a great job. Water is hot enough to turn my fingers very red and make the plastic pots plyable! I feel safe in saying I killed everything possibly alive on said pot. LOL

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

Victor - you're an engineer, as is DH. When we run the dishwasher, we have to turn the hot water tank all the way up about 15 minutes before running it, so it is at the hottest, and uses less electricity to heat the water as gas heats the hot water tank..... engineers...
