WELCOME...newbie traders continued

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Hi. I am new and trying to get the nerve up to list my plants. I have enjoyed reading all the different threads and viewing the beautiful pictures of different plants grown by members. I have haunted the "What is this?ID please" threads and have placed a few of my own.

It seems I have a lot of regular/common plants, most of them gifted to me , purchased at yard sales, or just rescued plants with no tags. When I try to look them up I get lost in the names.

I have Many roots/plants (in water, pots and in the ground) of a yellow and orange canna. Last year it bloomed at 5'9 (as tall as I am) This year it has buds knee high.(I am waiting with the camera so I can have the picture on hand) I have tossed out so many of these (before I found DG) This year I saved roots/plants and they are growing Everywhere!!
I have quite a few spider lily bulbs/plants. I have to wait until the parents bloom to figure out what I have. One is big, tall and white. The others are shorter, narrower, and light pink. The zip-lock bag they came in years ago stated they were pink spider lilies.

Tall/short, yellow and orange canna
Tall/short,narrow/large, pink/white spider lily
available.. blah
Those are just a few examples of my plant listing problems...

Howdy whozzat08!! welcome, and LOL I have the same problem with most my plants too. I can't remember the common names much less the "long words" some smart people know them by... But they are all fun to grow, and that is what keeps me going.
I was born in Houston, on the SE side.... many.. many yrs ago..hehe but I sure love my country life better. DH just had back surgery at Twelve Oaks Hospital 5 weeks ago, and couldn't believe all the traffic.. day and night... Home is where the heart is though... right???

whozzat.........the spider lilies......to a texan a spider lily is a lycoris bulb. and there are pink ones of those. white too but they are kind of rare. but there is some kind of hymenocallis that people also call spider lilies. you might google both of those to see if you can find your plant. also, you can google spider lily and see what you get. and just as soon as you know what you have dmail me if it turns out that you have WHITE LYCORIS because i for sure want to trade. lol.

on the canna.......google karchesky canna. you might could find either the exact one or something close. oh and when you are describing canna, besides bloom color and height.....also describe the foliage.

Mama,

This fall I hope to have several cuttings from my Ecuador Pink brug. I did 6 cuttings and all are gone. I didn't know you wnated one. I purchased it last year at our garden club's annual plant sale. There weren't any this year. Didn't really know what I was getting. But I was excited to begin my brug collection. UGH went my DH, who is insistent that he will ge thte greenhouse built this year. Tired of Living dining rooms becoming tropical greenhouses over winter. With the all the Christmas trees I put up, the rooms are virtualy unusable during that time.

It roots so easily with hormone in potting soil! However, I have cut it up so much last fall that it is just now really coming into its own. I would offfer a cutting sooner, but I have nothing over 2" (but I do have lots of them!) and it will be a quite a branched plant this year!

Thanks for starting this thread mamajack, I've been a member for a while, but have never traded plants for plants, I'm shy by nature and if that's not bad enough I'm a worrier too, so I'm always worried that what I give isn't going to be good enough, or it will die, or the plant or seed I give will strangely become something totally different. I just traded clothes for plants recently and so far it's going really well. It's the plants part that I'm intimidated by.....hopefully I'll get courage this year and do some. I had someone contact me the otherday for a seed trade (my first one), I was happy to send the seeds they wanted, although I felt like saying to the trader to take the seeds and see if they grow nicely for you and then I'll trade with you, just so I know they worked out for them. My garden is still quite young, we just bought our house 2 years ago and there were no plants in it, so I've been slowly adding to it....thanks to DG and all the enablers here I've become quite addicted to many fragrant plants! I told my husband we'll need to move soon....when he asked why, I said I need a bigger yard, I'm running out of room! You guys really make us newbies feel welcome, thanks again.

This year I want to take proper cuttings and try to root some specifically for trading so that I'm ready.

lol. astc............i have worried like that. even when it was my plant and i collected the seed and i packaged the seed i would worry that the seed would somehow turn out to be something entirely different. i try to remember to mention though, esp. if it's a hybrid that the seed may not come true from seed.

the only time you need to worry that it's not going to be what you think is when you got the seeds in a trade. and then you simply say i got my seeds in a trade. that lets you off the hook.

Hey Liz.... me too.. I put up 3 Christmas trees... and this year will be the same as you probably, as I have just begun the wonderful world of seed starting. Gotta start hinting for a greenhouse!

OH and I think I told you I am not bothered by slugs in my hostas..... WELL... I started a new bed with them, have about 65 of them planted so far, and they must be telling the slugs... "come get me"", cause I see holes everywhere not too bad though. Don't see the slugs though.. just assuming that is what the problem is... and you can bet I will NEVER say "I don't have those...BUGS"... ever again..lol

BEcky - of course you too!

whozzat,
The way that I think is the easiest to find, name and list your plants is this;
FROM THE HOME PAGE
1. click on GUIDES AND INFORMATION
2.. click on PLANT FILES
3. scroll down until you see the green box that says SEARCH FOR PLANTS
4. you will see words in green that say GENERALIZED SEARCH, click on that
5. in the box type in something you know you have, such as ORANGE CANNA
6. click on SEARCH PLANT FILES
7. now you will see a bunch of orange cannas, some have pictures and some don't, click on the one you think is yours.
8. you will come to the page with the plants info on it, if that is the one you have scroll down until you come to "Click here to add this plant to your have-list"
9. it will add it to your "HAVE" list and you can choose if you have seeds, plants, roots etc. I think this is the easiest way instead of trying to look up the proper botanical name, it will do that for you.
I hope this helped, it took me a while to catch on to this, and you can do the same to list the plants you "WANT".

Thank You Guspuppy! I cutnpasted and printed that!

mamajack- I think I have a hymenocallis. The one I have has a huge flower on a thick
stalk. I will just have to take a picture of it when it blooms. and the canna site narrowed it down to two! thanks!

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

well by all means tell me which two?

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

I posted a picture of the bloom on plant ID. The two i Think are closest are
Florence Vaughan?
Cattleya

But..I could be Way off..

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

cool. cattleya i don't know. sometimes the same canna gets different names. bengal tiger and striped beauty are two that come to mind that have a whole bunch of different names.

Terri,

I know I dmailed you earlier about my letter and my (our) issue with the USPS... BUT

I just wanted to share with everyone here what a wonderful, thoughtful, GENEROUS, DG'er you are! I agree with becky5711... I still can't get over how may plants you put in that box! If I remember... I think you sent me about 20!!!

When I joined Dave's, my only plants were the kind you can get from any Lowe's or Wally World store. I received a huge pack of seeds from the "newbie seed giveaway" and then received that wonderful present from you Terri!

Thanks for making my life A LOT greener!
Brandi

(I must have lost my southern manners somewhere... because I should have publicly thanked you a long time ago!)
