Hi all - glad to see everyone is doing okay

16 more Green?? I can't imagine having that many plants! maybe one day I'll get there. You are a sweetheart for offering them to us - thank you for your kind generosity!

I had to look up the gas plant - never heard of it before. Interesting and very pretty.

Had a great time at the Botanical Gardens show and bought plenty of plants. One of my favorites is a Persian Shield - just love that vibrant purple color. I picked up a Snowbank Brug too - hope I don't kill like I did my last one!

Northeast, LA(Zone 8a)

First, I want to say thanks Green, I haven't recieved that package yet , but i am confident that it is in Detroit, but due to postal incompetance, I have yet to receive it. Second, to you mamajack thanks for the encouragement, I had success sending out my first two plant trades and both of my recipients said they received thier wandering jews in good shape. Yea!

Slidell, LA(Zone 8b)

Northeast, LA(Zone 8a)

Em I will have some butter fly Plants for you at Jeri's I hope they can hang on in the glass room that long. I am not putting up my list till I get back from Tupelo. no trades necessary . It's a bummer about the weather. Mine that are outside will have to fend for themselves. I am not able to do the sheet thing everywhere this year. River

Slidell, LA(Zone 8b)

River - thank you! I can't wait to meet you at Jeri's. She is such a sweetheart, I really enjoyed what little time we had together at City Park. I am hoping that I will have some things large enough to pot up to bring. I am going to try to do some coleus cuttings and I do have that night blooming cereus I could do. I won't have much but am bringing some things. I just ran out to put the sheets on the new veggies and I think I broke a zucchini :( Oh well. I should have paid more attention to the weather forecast. I knew it was getting cooler but never thought it would get this cold this far into April. Predicted to be 34 here tonight. I sure hope this weird weather doesn't mean another bad hurricane season! I couldn't deal with another katrina - once was enough! Stay warm my friend - talk to you soon. Em.

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

becky, where on earth is that texas town you are from? never heard of it. shoot, i can't even pronounce it. gotta be south of me if you're close to waxahachie we are having a plant swap/ nursery tour/ garden tour/ margaritaville get together at broncbuster's house this sat. it is rumored that mibus and i also are going to hijack a greyhound bus. we'll be like keanu reeves and sandra bullock in speed although we are both girls.

(Becky) Colmesneil, TX(Zone 8b)

Mamajack,
LOL Like a native....Co....ma .. neil... and a LITTLE town midway between Beaumont and Lufkin... still lost? hehe SE DEEP SE TX. You are south of Dallas??? I know I have been through Waxahachie... I think when we were "running" from hurricane Rita... anyway about 5 hrs from me... but I sure would like to be there with ya'll... sounds like sooo much fun. If you are like me you will need that bus to bring all your goodies home... what fun... I'll be there in spirit...hehe oh... and if I don't "pick it up"... how about grabbing me a couple brugs ! Gee Thanks !!
See ya !!
Becky

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

i think all the brugs are spoken for. i was trying to get one for dave and i think i waited too late. but lots of people will have cuttings this fall. last year someone even sold brug cuttings for a buck apiece in the classified section. so be sure and check the classifieds periodically. esp. late summer/early fall. dl and iris people all are wanting to get rid of their excess plants and you can find some good deals.

and if dave gets the auction going over on davebay we ought to find plants at good prices too.

fate is northeast of dallas. broncbuster lives in waxahachie and has invited us all over this sat. there are plant swaps down there where you are too. if you run into smockette latch onto her. she works at a wholesale nursery. lol. oh, and vossner is down there. she is wonderful too. lots of good people down there where you are with lots of "good" plants. heeheehee

Slidell, LA(Zone 8b)

Morning all

Hi Becky welcome :)

mamajack - that was good info on the classified - never looked there before - will have to check it out.

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

and talking about the classifieds...lots of nurseries post there as well. last year there were rose people, misc. nurseries, big dl growers as well as home gardeners. sometimes these people give discounts only to dg'ers.

and beck, have you ever been to a restaurant down there called sartain's? i only went once and i guess i will talk about it till the day i die. barbecued crabs!!!!!! never had 'em before or since. about the most wonderful thing i could imagine.

Slidell, LA(Zone 8b)

ohhhh bbq crabs - what were they like? I never heard of that before and I am here in crabland lol were they kinda like bbq shrimp?

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

no. not like shrimp. they had shrimp too. all i can say is that for the rest of my life i will talk about sartain's barbecued crabs. just wonderful. lol.

(Becky) Colmesneil, TX(Zone 8b)

Hi !! LOL mama.. was kidding about the brugs, but was sure glad to get the info about the classifieds... I will indeed look there ! Sartains... in Beaumont??? Well of course, and my hubby is like you on the BBQ crabs... I don't eat anything that takes that long to get a little piece of meat out..lol They are blue crabs which they say are the best, but I don't know how they fix them... If you ever get down this way I will take to there !

I think I looked vossners trade list, haven't seen smockette... but you "oldies".... BUT GOODIES !! kinda have me intimidated a little...hehe gosh... ya'll got hundreds of plants and such, and I have a wimpy trade list !! I am learning so much from ya'll and I appreciate it

Hey em... thanks for the welcome!!

Becky

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

becky, i started seriously collecting just 3 yrs. ago. but i don't have a husband and i don't buy other things like most women. and i traded like a crazy woman for the last 2 yrs. i buy df's of daylilies and trade one for another variety. i buy daylilies with a couple other people as well. i split orders with people on all kinds of things and i am a co-op madwoman. when i didn't have anything much to trade except for lycoris radiata, crossvine and rock rose there were always people who wanted them. lol. you can find trade material on your family land esp. if it's out in the country. people want trees...one year i traded hackberry trees. lol. i have traded misc. daffodils and iris. lots of people could care less if it has a name or not. i have traded white yarrow found in a field, wine cup gone amok from ONE roadside starter plant, crossvine that rooted itself from an old house. plus i traded plants to a lady for some fashionable clothes for my 13 yr. old daughter. this lady had been involved in sample clothes from market hall. some people trade things that they make for plants. i have even traded old pots for plants. and there is always seeds. i get many new plants every year from seed sowing. also, i don't buy the biggest plants out there. i would rather buy a 2.00 plant and let it grow big than pay 25-30.00 for a plant in a 3 gal. pot. i have bought clematis that i could separate and have traded rooted plants from just one that i bought. but if you do this be prepared to lose a few. i have lost whole plants in my zeal to find out "how it works". but whatever i do i am completely honest about what i am trading. i measure plants with a tape measure and then i subtract and inch or so. i tell people how big the roots are.
another thing i do in the spring is root lots of things when they are just beginning to grow. it's easier for me at that time. then a couple months later...voila, a new plant to trade. i root lots of hardy hib. every year as they are so easy to do.

if you start plants from trade seeds always tell your trade partner that you haven't seen the bloom and seeds were from a trade. plant same way. even if the seeds came from a reputable trader that you know always tell the next trader what you have. never be afraid that the person won't trade with you if you tell them the truth about your plant. sometimes they won't but they might next time if you stay honest. last year i got a plant from a very well respected gardener. it bloomed and was not what she said. her seeds came from a trade she told me later. and even though i might trade with her again i know i will ask more questions next time. and who knows if she got them from the person who actually had the plant. i even know some people who trade for trade material for someone else. so things can get passed around quite a bit before a plant finds it's home. lol.

(Becky) Colmesneil, TX(Zone 8b)

Thanks Mama,
We have 22 acres here and lots of natives, I call them and yes I have been surprised that a few have wanted some of my stuff. I do have other things, but don't know how to list, cause they are heirloom oldies, and haven't a clue as to what variety they are. I am a trader too, and love the bargain.. half dead plants... heck I am just a plain ol' bargain hunter on just about everything..lol I cringe on some of the prices of plants, and am not about to pay that much.

I try to be a very honest person, and would rather give more than I get, so there would be no negative feedback for me. I did get into a mess with 1 DGer, in that she took my sentences out of context from previous dmails, and she was quite upset with me. I tried explaining, and even took the blame... thats me lol... but thats ok... some people you just can't please... but I have always been a peacemaker, so it is hard for me.

I am a NOIDer mostly.. all I know is if it's pretty, I like it. And I love the "hardies" the plants that come back every year with not much effort on my part. I just have to learn how to collect seeds, cuttings etc. I NEVER even thought about collecting until I found Daves. Wow I am impressed, yet confused all at the same time !! couldn't believe all the different things you have to do to get some plants started from seeds. I guess I thought all seeds were like tomatoes...hehe the only thing I ever started from seeds.... whew... was I wrong, but I am having a ball learning all this stuff !! I am reading all the forums that I have interest in.

I am a plain ol' country girl, and as I said a bargain hunter. I rarely buy clothes even that are new... I have this hospice shop close to me, and I LUV to go there, and buy practically new for pennies on the dollar... my cousin says "don't tell people that".. shoot, I am happy for the bargain !! Besides... saves me money for other things...lol

AND... I do like to talk... can you tell?? hehe

Come on down.. I am getting hungry... we will go to sartains....
Becky

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

my, my. sartain's...the place of dreams. next time you go in there tell them about me. this is not the first time i have sung their praises on daves. maybe they'll give me a free dinner, ya think?

(Becky) Colmesneil, TX(Zone 8b)

LOL... Hubby has DR appt. tomorrow in Beaumont... think I might just goooo.....????? LOL Who knows... free advertising ought to be worth something right?

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

it ought to. tell 'em i made up this little jingle with a little help from freecreditreport.com.
