What's Blooming Part II
Wow- Susan! Think we're going to have to move you up to 'Expert Status'!
Absolutely beautiful Everyone :)
GREAT Pictures and GREAT growing!
SOOOO tired today. We had our 2nd AV meeting yesterday and then Pier came over. It was a PERFECT day!
AND I just realized that it's not really 6:30 but 7:30 *lol*
What a wonderful way to wake up :)
Kim
Jannich and Diane, I've been growing African violets for years, but I must admit that I don't really know anything about them! I didn't even know that there were trailing ones. I looked at this one carefully and I don't think it's trailing. I think it's about 6 plants crammed into one pot. In vying for space they've grown over the sides. Here's a closer look.
Lin, love that Aiko! I've been all about yellow in the garden this spring. Gail, loved the yellow hoya too. It was a hoya right? Didn't know they came in that color.
The pots are the self-watering kind which I just love because I can't mess up by forgetting to water for a couple of weeks or by overwatering.
wow, loving the pictures Susan!!
Elphaba (I will never remember that user ID) (LOL)
That is the most beautiful and healthy african violet I have ever seen. It doesn't look like a trailer to me. Do you know her name..............it maybe looks like a lot of crowns in one pot but , if it is, it is still the prettiest thing I have seen. I hope you know the name of her and I can look it up in the reference sites...........
gail
Wow, Loving all these "Pretties"!
Elphaba, I too really love the self watering pots. Last year I bought a bunch of those plastic reservoir pots with the holes in the top that you stick the wicks in but I found them to be so unstable - I was constantly knocking them over. The plants sitting on top made them too top heavy and I am a clutz so every time I would reach to pinch off a dead bloom or leaf or something I was knocking them over. I was at our local Wal-Mart a few days ago and they were totally out of the AV pots! Hopefully they will get more in soon cause I need a few more.
I don't have too many AV's anymore ... lost most of mine to some bug or disease or something a few months ago, along with a few Episcia's. Figured I would try to downsize and not have sooo many of each kind of plant. But, then I see everyone's beautiful photo's and begin wanting more! That AV in Elphaba's photo above looks very much like one I had a couple of years ago and I think the name was Rococo Pink. I couldn't find it when I googled that name though so I may be wrong on the name.
Susan: My aren't you becoming the Grower! You are doing great! Hard to believe you just got your very first AV a few months ago. We have Gessiegail who is a pro at growing Gessie's .... pretty soon we will have to change your user name to Gessiequeen! Great job! Lovely Passiflora you've grown there too! My next door neighbors grow those plants on their patio and some are soo gorgeous! Does that one have any fragrance? I was thinking I read somewhere that some passiflora's are fragrant.
Lin,
Some of them smell wonderful... This one as my nose is stuffed still I don't think has a smell... I have about 10 diffrent types and I can't wait for them to go outside... I am going to put in pots this year and not in the ground... I killed the mother plant to the one I posted buy digging her up so I don't want to take the chance again this year... I have also grown allot from seeds that I am very proud of.... I am now queen to the AV's You sent me most of what I have...LOL lights are what I say makes them grow and also a heat mat in the begining...
Ok I have to go to the store now for food before the tribe here kills me....
Hugs,
Susan

Violetmom....such pretty plants..all of them : )
Hey Ladies: There's a newbie over on the Beginner Houseplant forum asking advice on self watering AV pots. I posted my thoughts but thought maybe some of y'all who are more experienced with AV's could give her some advice:

Gail, crowns! What an excellent word. Yes, it has 6 crowns which may or may not be different plants. I used to have a very bad habit of sticking broken leaves back in the same pot, so they may actually be 6 plants.
As for the name, unfortunately, it's a no-named brand from Home Depot, but I have seen it for sale there since I bought it about 5 years ago. In fact, I think I saw it recently because I remember having the conversation with myself of "just because you have one that you love doesn't mean that you need more!" and its sister conversation of "if you're going to get another violet, get one you don't already have!" and then there's the mother conversation (I say mother because in my head, I hear it in my mother's voice) "You have enough violets. Quit wasting your money on plants!" Those voices in my head can be so annoying!
Lin, I lost a violet recently to a weird and swift malady. I'm hoping it doesn't spread. I almost lost all of them a while ago. I finally thought that maybe my fertilizer had gone bad. Sure enough, I replaced the fertilizer and they all bounced back.
Susan, I've had these violets for years and I never even thought to smell them until recently. I was standing by the kitchen table probably wondering why I had walked in there, when I smelled something wonderful. I couldn't believe it was that purply violet on the far left. I was just thrilled.
Finally, I've apparently missed spring. Here's a photo of a wild violet in the backyard that's already done blooming and I missed it!
Lin,
After seeing your beautiful yellow flower I went back to mine and guess what??? I have one alive... I am so thrilled... I love the color yellow... Yeahhhhhhhhhhh
Susan
Ok I hope you can all hear me as I am doing the Happy Dance... I went out to look after seeing Lin's beautiful yellow chirita and I found one... Well I went out again and guess what ???? I found another one with two in the cup...WOW HAPPY DANCE.... Now question.... Should I take the one that has two out of the solo cup and give each there own or leave as they are???
Hugs,
Susan
Oh, very pretty Miss Kim, and Little Mr. Turtle is cute too!
just found one more bloom and off I go to get ready for our monthly AV meeting in Corpus Christi. I love to go!
We had a storm and no electricity all afternoon. The winds were pounding everything along with the very much needed rain. I didn't even mind not having power .
A tiny start of episicia 'Silver Skies'
Gail, that was a fun meeting, wasn't it? Glad you made the drive again! Yes, the weather was crazy yesterday. I am happy with the rain though. Sure needed it. What a pretty picture. My violets and epecia's etc are doing so well. I have been painting getting ready for my new furniture and violet shelves in the new room that my son moved out of. LOTS of work.
The Corpus group is so much fun and such hard workers . I love to attend the meetings just to be around everyone and stay inspired! Good to see you there, also!
Hi All,
I have been away for the AV meeting and I got to go to Kim's house and play plants, which was loads of fun. I only wish I could have stayed and had a slumber party! I haven't even had time to post since I've been home. I also wanted to post some pics of the balsam impatient that Kim gave me...it was blooming when I took it out of it's box! But I can see she has posted a pic of hers and mine looks identical. So I will take pics of the rest and try to get back to post today. I got so many nice plant starts...and I have lots of "projects" for the club...BTW you are talking to the new vice pres. of the African Violet and Gesneriad Society of Maine or AVGS of ME. Pretty cool huh? I need to make a logo for us...will add that to the to do list. I am glad to be back with my plants though, as I have seedlings about to bloom and lots of other "irons in the fire" FUN FUN FUN! Here is an older pic of Irish Angel, which I am trying to GTS for Tulsa...BTW, is anyone going to the National Convention? I just got all my reservations made and I hope I can meet a few from this group! Pier in Maine, hoping it is warmer than 10 degrees today!!!!
Wow! Love the Nun's orchid Gail!
jannich, where are you (LOL)....
I was getting worried about you.
When I plant her up in a much bigger pot (the roots are smashed in this one pot) and she spread, I can share her bulbs...............
Are you still getting to with the group to the convention this weekend?
OT------Which is odd for a lurker, I know. But I think everyone loves to come here and see the beautiful pictures of what's blooming.
Dilbey's has a new edition of the book "Streptocarpus" out. I e-mailed them a couple of weeks ago and ask if they would ship me one their books. At the time, she told me that any day they would be getting the new edition. She asked if I would buy it on EBay and pay by paypal. I said that would be great! It is now listed on eBay and costs about 32.00 including postage. I've ordered my copy and I thought someone else might be interested in it also. Lurker Lou
Lou, don't forget that every year about 30 (at least) new streps are offered at nationals, so it will get outdated in a hurry, I just use the one on line.............
