What's Blooming Part II

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I am confused.......these are african violets and I thought you all said that the book was by Dibley who hybridizes streps???????
By the way, the avs are great looking!

Just took this picture last night. Shows a few of my violets.

Here is the other side of the sunroom. Orchids and more violets, etc.

Here is what's blooming at least from the sunroom door. You can see part of the yard.

Sorry to confuse you Gail...I just wanted to comment on the book as it's worth reading...and then I wanted to show some violet pics. Two separate things...I was a bit confusing, though. Sorry.

Violetmom - do you remember where you found Laughing Anna? Your Rebel's Night Breezes is very pretty and looks a lot better than mine. Also is the Dibley book just a catalog or is it for people who need help with the plants?
Sallysblooms - I just love your yard, it looks very peaceful

Thank you!

I really love the Ma series from TheVioletBarn........I have never had one I didn't love.

Rockport, TX(Zone 9a)

Here's one that just started blooming this week. Another no name, but I remember the sign said something about space that made it sound like they were raised on the space station. I remember envisioning astronauts growing violets which was quite amusing and may be part of the reason why I bought one!

Sallysblooms - love the dog too!

Violetmom -- your weird little seedling looks enchanting!

Here's some info about the "Space Violets": http://www.optimara.com/everfloris.html

Lubbock, TX(Zone 7a)

Elphaba, I remember seeing that 'space thing' at Lowe's last year & envisioned the same thing! But the only one's they had left were so awful I didn't buy any. Glad to see that they CAN look good & healthy! So next time I see some think I'll grab one!

Lin, thanks for the site.......I just love the lavender ones..........or blue.........in the Ever series

Northeast, NE(Zone 5a)

Very pretty av Elphaba..I'm not positive but it looks like it might be from the artists palette series..maybe Degas?? Very beautiful whatever the name and I absolutely love your planter : )

Lubbock, TX(Zone 7a)

I found my Aeschynanthus blooming today! Wondered if it would in the north window I put it in- now I know! Umm....ignore the dust on the leaves...BAD plant mommy, BAD!

Lin, the info on space violets was just fascinating! I haven't noticed that it's any larger or blooms more than my other violets, but how cool is it that I have a plant that was mutated in space! It's in my bedroom too, so I could become a pod person one night!

Diane, dust, what dust? Now say if you found dog hair on it (like I often do) that might justify a little bad mommy reprimand, but dust --nah! It's lovely!

Lubbock, TX(Zone 7a)

Elphaba- You're too kind! LOL- Thank you

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Diane, I love that lipstick plant!

Bonnie, this Nun's Orchid was no bargain. I found it at Turner's in Corpus christi and it was 28.00..........but it is large and needs to be moved up to a much bigger pot. Some people put them in the ground, but I can't with our winds. They grow and multiply under the soil........

Did y'all read Jill's article on green African violets? I'm aching for a green av now! I want to pretend that I have leprechauns!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

My favorite green one is Frozen in Time but there are so new ones out, too.........have to see which one she used.

Jannich.............you know I 'hate' you because you grow such beautiful Kohlerias..........I just can't seem to catch on...............those are fantastic!!!

Jannich, your kohlerias are just breathtaking! Love them!

The painters just power washed my house. The painter warned me that some water came through the windows even though they were closed. This poor av that just opened one little flower today was totally doused in water. I can't get it all off. Any tips on drying the leaves?

Rockport, TX(Zone 9a)

I just discovered that the underside of the leaves were soaked too. I was drying it and broke off a leaf in the back. I was looking at it and thought that the underside of these leaves are such a pretty color that I should share that with you too, so here it is from the back!

Elphaba..such a terrible thing to have happen : ( ....such a gorgeous av! I should think if the blooms themselves didn't get too wet it should be ok.I would just take a very soft absorbent kleenex, paper towel,or soft cloth and dab as much water off the leaves as you can.I use a q-tip to get into the tighter spots.Hopefully it will still come out ok for you! Keep us posted!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

It could very well be that I don't know any better, but i wash all my leaves on my avs under the kitchen sink about once a month. I wouldn't want the power washer guy to be washing mine, though!!

Rockport, TX(Zone 9a)

You're kidding! I thought that getting the leaves wet was really bad for the leaves. I had a small one under an orchid that often got dripped on and it looked terrible. Have I been basing my av care on a myth?

Northeast, NE(Zone 5a)

Alot of us rinse our leaves off in the sink to get rid of built up dust. Not quite the same thing as a powerwasher tho like Gail said : o

South, TX

Elphaba, that red is lovely! Hope they are OK. I bet all will be fine if you dry them. Fingers crossed.
