Kim, you are the funniest of all with your balsam and oxalis..................they are pretty even in the house! well...........especially in the house...........

That red strep has to be Midnight Flame because she is the only true red one I have right now............(in bloom that is)

(Zone 1)

Now, how did I miss this new thread until now? Guess I've been snoozing!

Gail, that deep red Strep is absolutely gorgeous! I like that name Midnight Flame!

MrsBonnie: What is that Wonderful, Purple plant on the far right of your window sill? Is it a Sinningia? I LOVE IT! Also like that Rebel's Rosebud AV! Love variegated foliage!

Cedar: That deep purple Strep is Beautiful! I'm really loving the color purple lately! Oh, and how lucky you are to have your Hoya multiflora getting ready to bloom! Mine has blasted the buds and peduncles twice. It was not doing so well until someone suggested I put it in one of the self watering AV pots because it likes water! Now, it is doing great, has a new little peduncle and I am hoping to see blooms before too long!

Kimber: I have that same Oxalis but mine just stopped blooming. It is out on the deck outside. I need to water everything out there tomorrow! Everything is sooo dry! Love that pink Impatiens. I've never heard of Balsam Impatiens though. The regular 'ole garden impatiens has always been a favorite landscape of mine for shade. I've tried growing the New Guinea Hybrid Impatiens which are supposed to be able to take a bit of sun and they always die on me!

What's the difference between Streptocarpus and Streptocarpella?

This message was edited Mar 6, 2008 3:57 PM

Northeast, NE(Zone 5a)

Diane..This is what I found while researching them on the internet.... Streptocarpella is in the same family as streptocarpus but where streps have long sword-like leaves, streptocarpella has small one-inch leaves similar to a succulent. A streptocarpella has similar looking flowers but they are quite a bit smaller than streptocarpus blooms. Streptocarpella bloom colors are limited to blue, purple, whitish blue. Streps have many colors including bicolors and fantasys..
I myself only have 1 streptocarpella(concord) right now.I think I received it from Mrsbonnie in a swap last fall. Not blooming yet but growing nicely : ) I had another from Amy/raingazer I believe and had it out in a hanging basket last summer and it bloomed its fool head off..then I forgot to bring it in before a frost and now its history ; ( I am going to go snap a pic later so you can see the difference between the foliage....that is unless someone else has one they can show?

(Zone 1)

There are two Streptocarpella's listed in Plant Files: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/2114/

and this cultivar, "Concord Blue": http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/58138/

My sister in N. Georgia always has huge baskets of these out on her deck all summer, in hot, hot afternoon sun!

Lubbock, TX(Zone 7a)

Hmm...thanks. The Streptocarpus leaves look to be thin..Are they? That's why I think they'd be hard for me to grow. That usually translates to needy- more humidity and unforgiving about water.

Ottawa, IL(Zone 9a)

Hi All;
I have 3 strptocarpella, one is white, another is purple & 1 has varigated foliage, but that one has not bloomed yet.theey are really cool plants.

( Kim) Zion, IL(Zone 5a)

Ok I have been playing with the camera and I think that this is so cool where you can see the water drop , No Idea what name she is called

Dimmer: I see you have some pretty little bloomers there! That is neat with the water droplet on the leaf!

Mrsbonnie: I love that Streptocarpella with the variegated foliage ... how cool! I never knew there was a variegated version!

LOTS of great information here and LOTS of beautiful pictures too ladies :)

I grew Balsam Impatiens for the first time last year and simply fell in love with it. At first I didn't know what it was because I didn't mark the pot *lol* and Ecrane ID'd it for me. Luckily, every bloom produces seed. I had planted it a little late last year so I literally brought the plant in and cared for it until I had gathered every seedpod.

I was told that they don't come true (color wise) from seed. But as an experiment, I tried to separate the colors when I took the seed. I am assuming that they really don't come true from seed as I am quite sure the only color ones I sowed were the coral color but got the hot pink. *lol*

So this year, I will have a HUGE bucket full of them. I also got some seed for the spotted ones that I'm really anxious to try too :) I can't wait ,to get out there and sow some seed. Do you think it would be possible that our 4 feet of snow will melt by morning in our 20 degree night tonight? *lol*

Here is a picture of one from last year. I had pink, purple, white and a few coral colored ones. It was love at first sight and I will grow them every year from now on. I never really cared for annuals but WOW, what a difference they made last year. I will have annuals again this year but all from seed I sow as I refuse to buy a plant that isn't a perennial or houseplant *lol*

Kim, I love that particular balsalm. Lin, I like balsam better than impatients and plant it real thick as the stems are tall and individual like..............here are a couple of pictures taken from Park Seed of the new Peppermint Stick balsam and the second one comes from Burpee and is mixed seed. I like the mixed colors in seeds, too.

Here is the mixed one from Burpee's catalog on line

Gail,

Do you need some Balsam seeds?

Quoting:
Spring is coming!!!

Don't forget to turn your clocks ahead Sunday night!!! Whoooopie MORE daylight!!!

I THINK it may be Saturday and not Sunday that we turn the clocks ahead. My calendar said Sunday but hubby heard on the TV that it's Saturday so maybe I misunderstood the calendar or maybe the calendar means it's in effect starting Sunday? (goodness I think I'm losing it sometimes).

I just wanted to correct this so that I don't mess up everyone or make someone late to something. It's SATURDAY night we turn them ahead ladies. Sorry 'bout 'dat.

Tonight we have a swim meet for my daughter from 7:30 - 9:30/10:00. WOW, sure hope I can stay awake that long *lol*

Have a great day friends :)

Kim

Kim, your plant looks like the vintage impatiens that here in Ga are called 'touch me not' because when the seed pod is ripe you only have to touch it for it to pop open and spray the seeds. They grow nice and tall and bloom all summer and are self sowing. My Grandmother always had these in her flower bed. It's nice to see them again.

Susan

(Zone 1)

LOL, I googled Touch Me Not Flowers and lookie what came up: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/156/

Looking through those photo's I LOVE that peppermint looking one! They are all beautiful though! The exclamation of the seed pods reminds me of four o'clocks ... when they get to a certain point if you touch them the seeds go everywhere too.

decided to google Balsam Impatiens and only got these two: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/72751/
