Hardy Tropical forum.

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Terry....you would be surprised!!! most of us in the islands push the envelope too....and we are very close to areas that are subtropical - for instance, Volcano @ 4000' is only 25 mins away!!!

We push the envelope too, growing more cold weather stuff in warmer weather...

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

I read my post and feel I owe an apology. Very tired yesterday and I seemed to be a little snippy. Truly sorry for that. didn't get my point across but I did sound real ugly.I would never, ever want anyone to not feel welcome. The friendships on DG are more important than anyone's opinion. I skip all over the forums as I have many different interests and find they are represented somewhere on DG.
Those that don't address my particular interests/problems/questions are not on my "watch list". If there are 200 more forums added, it would be just what someone else needed. I am all for diverse interests. I apologize once again to everyone for showing a side that seldom rises to the top. That is not the person I choose to be.

Aloha,

Christi

For anyone interested, I have started a new thread in the Tropical Plants Forum for those of us wanting to grow "Tropicals" in our colder climates. :o)
Terry, I swiped your words for the thread name, hope you don't mind! :)

Thanks, Christi! Much appreciated, and accepted, apology! :o)

Chuckle...misty, help yourself! (*They* - whoever *they* are - say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery ;o)

Saint James, MO(Zone 6b)

Well, I figured I couldn't have put it better myself, so why not! LOL

Tuscaloosa, AL(Zone 7b)

Just for the record, I was not confused at all about the focus of the Tropical Forum or the Tropical Gardening Forum.

Karen

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

I never even bothered looking at the tropical forum. Just figured it would be a bunch of stuff i can't grow. Good solution Terry that might do the trick.

Okay everyone let simmer on down now. LOL.

Johnson City, TX(Zone 8b)

I think the deciding factor should be simply that so many
DGers spread the word about this particularly named forum,
identified with it right away, understood immediately what it
meant, and it quickly became a magnet. THAT should be the
answer to the question of whether or not this named forum
should exist. "By Gardeners, For Gardeners".

(may princess tammy give her loyal subjects what they want)

Clemmons, NC(Zone 7b)

after I have read this again I distinctly recall the exact same debate over the need for a tropical gardening forum specifically for tropical climates when the tropicals forum already existed.

but the interest was there, and the forum was created. I believe a similar forum for hardy exotics would get a lot of traffic. mistygardener started a great thread for her zone on the Tropical Plants forum.....it would be great if there were a way to create stickies or something (in a new forum, especially...lol) for each zone. AlohaHoya mentioned liking to backwards zone-push (??) sometimes, and a hardy exotic forum would be helpful for other folks in similar situations I imagine.

Saint James, MO(Zone 6b)

Hi there you two! ☻

TabacVille, NC(Zone 7a)

Oh well...actually there is a greater need for a Hardy Gardeners' forum!
Hiya Tammy!

Saint James, MO(Zone 6b)

Hi there, Jaye! ♥ I am very pleased with the turnout on my thread!!!!! LOADS of GREAT information being given there, too!

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

is turn-out supposed to be hyphenated? compost. oh, wrong thread.

Saint James, MO(Zone 6b)

HA HA HA you are way too funny mama!!!

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

why don't they just make one for tropicals in a temperate climate, and then a subtropical gardening forum?

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

lol. diehard, i think that the admin people are thinking that we already have too many forums as it is. personally i like the tropicals in a temperate climate idea myself. it is clearly what i am looking for. plant delights nursery is all i know to use now and if they aren't growing it then i can only guess.

Saint James, MO(Zone 6b)

mamajack, haven't you been to my thread yet? I will whoop you ya know! HE HE HE

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

ain't this it? lol.

Saint James, MO(Zone 6b)

you are so funny!!!!

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

oh... i seem to have missed that well i don't think that there could ever be such a thing as too many forums

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

well i am on a thread regarding indigenous/native plants/ wildflowers and heard it over there. lol.

Saint James, MO(Zone 6b)

diehrd I know you have been there cause you said a BIG high to AuntB! LOL

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

It's not just about the number of forums, it's also about how different the new forum would be from the ones that are already there. Since the subject of growing tropicals in a temperate climate is OK to talk about on the existing Tropical Plants forum, I think that might make the bar higher to get a new forum.

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

oh! well i never really figured out what yall were talkin about

Saint James, MO(Zone 6b)

HA HA HA diehrd!

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

i'm just clueless!

Saint James, MO(Zone 6b)

Oh no, you are just a young gardener that should probably be in bed! HE HE HE

's-Gravenhage, Netherlands(Zone 8b)

I would very much appreciate a forum for hardy tropical plants. Hardy as in: can stand some degrees of frost! I don't have room to move tropicals inside for the winter......

Sumter, SC(Zone 8a)

why do I keep hearing in my head Larry the cable guy saying "Gettt errrr done" I need to turn down my hearing aid I guess....oh wait I don't have one.. :o)

Victoria Harbour, ON

I'm joining in..count me in...lol..do love your banter..

west Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Out on the west side of Houston we freeze every single winter. I'm talking 9' Hamalia patens which freeze to ground level every single winter without exception (this non-winter here included). I think a Hardy Tropical Forum would see a lot more traffic from me, anyway, than the Tropical Forum does. I do grow a lot of Hardy Tropical bulbs here as do a lot of other folks.

The fastest way to demonstrate whether a separate forum is warranted is to use the existing tropical plants forum for your discussions and questions on this subject.

If it becomes apparent the forum is getting too "crowded" we'll definitely consider splitting it into its own forum.

Saint James, MO(Zone 6b)

Hi Terry,
I think my Thread Name is doing a pretty good job of drawing people in! Thanks again for letting me 'borrow' it! HE HE HE

Clemmons, NC(Zone 7b)

Hey Terry,

Just to throw a curveball here....

I am thinking that a lot of the people are here because they are interested in zone-pushing/denial, exotic plants, and hardy exotics. From my perspective this includes a lot of plants that would not be considered necessarily "tropical" but can create an exotic look--optunias are the first thing that comes to mind for some reason.

These ideas were discussed by others, also. I am terrible at naming things quickly, but what if there were a forum for temperate exotics, or plants that look exotic but can be adaptable? I just think of all the folks I've traded with in places all over the world that are stretching their zones one way or another......

I think having threads on Tropical Plants are great on hardiness, but before we know it they'll be covered up by heliconia and tacca threads (sigh..I wish I could grow them, lol)....you know I have to keep trying :)

(Jan) So Milw, WI(Zone 5b)

Hello from Jan, a zone-pusher in the frozen tundra of Wisconsin.
Thank you Tropicanna for letting me know about this thread and mistygardener for all you've done to "get errr done"!! I definately will be visiting...

Jan, tropical plant mama to EE's, Cannas, Brugs, Hibiscus, Banana, etc...

Saint James, MO(Zone 6b)

Will be great to see you there, Jan!!!

Tuscaloosa, AL(Zone 7b)

Tropicanna,

That's EXACTLY what we've been asking for. You put it into words perfectly.

Karen

Saint James, MO(Zone 6b)
