Wait, Victor, did you say thornless blackberries? I might go for that! I eat cereal with fruit in the summer, and my own fruit would be so much nicer (and more economical) than store-bought. I love berries, and Jan's got me starting a cantaloupe, etc.
x, Carrie
what have you bought so far? part 2
Kass, so exactly how MANY roses?? c'mon, I owned up LOL
Yes, Kassia, just how many for this order?
Jan - I've avoided the co-ops after a bit of fiasco in one that I was in. I'm glad you had a good experience.
Arlene - your daylily bed is beautiful in bloom. I saw it at the end of the season so I couldn't appreciate it's beauty.
Anita - I have the feeling you're talking about the co-op from he{{ - I remember it all too well (hey, it rhymes). That co-op has kept me from joining any with plants and I've only done water crystals and cow pots. Come on out and dig more daylilies!
Boy am I glad I avoided that co-op....I did 2 last year and 3 this year and haven't had any problems. I did hear about the bad co-op....the talk went on for a long time.
On a sunny note....everything i've sowed under lights has sprouted except 2 things. Those 2 plants take 30-40 days to sprout so im not worried....yet.
Congrats, Celeste!
Good Grief thats a sad mess of plants Pirl! I can see why you would avoid the co=ops after that.
I did hear something about it but paid no attention at the time I guess. It's too bad. If I get stung I'll know better next time.
I've never shopped at a coop--maybe they aren't popular here---nice daylily, Pix. I would like a David Austen rose (my art teacher has a beauty), but it would need protection here, & I'm not sure I could provide it--the only good place, against the garage is filled with climbing roses---William Baffins & New Dawn as well as Fourth of July--I also have a small shrub, Baby Love. Most roses die here because of exposure & MY neglect!
Robin, when we talk about co-ops, we're talking about online co-ops here at DG, not the neighborhood kind you're thinking of. There's a forum here strictly for co-ops where folks get together to try to get better pricing on plants and other gardening stuff. Problem is, sometimes the person running the co-op either takes on too much or isn't as responsible as they should be. Or the supplier lets them down. you have to be careful. Here's a link to the forum if you want to see what goes on.

Robin, I meant to ask what zone you are in. You should be able to grow some Austins.
::::knocking on wood:::: so far I have had good luck with the few coops I jumped in on... no big disasters .... I tread lightly
:)
I read some of the bad threads... I can imagine how it can get ugly fast
edit - don't know if you guys have been to this page or not... google for gardeners

I almost bought this beautiful purple blue-violet calla lily from American Meadows.

I still want it when I see their photo of it. But the PlantFiles photo is resistible. Wouldn't it be nice if there were one that color though?
My latest acquistions are:
Greywood's Social Butterfly, Harlequinesque, Light at Dawn, Pink Dace, Silent Thunder, Fashion Model, Blueberry Fair,Easter CDM, Frilled Enchantment and Kabluey. Now I wonder who could have been influencing me lately???
I am totally innocent of all charges.
My first order from Ensata was about 30 plants as I recall. They're just too beautiful.
So you caught the JI disease, Weeze?
Yes, Victor I have, but that was after ordering a half dozen Viburnums. Then again, I did not mention any names in my post, yet Pirl felt the need to defend herself. So, Pirl, you are guilty as almost charged :~)
Ps....Pirl I have been checking the classifieds daily
Yes, Pirl was certainly acting guilty!
Didn't take her long to deny did it? Venu you couldn't of been influenced by a nicer enabler!
Victor and Pixie, you are both spot on!
That should be the name of one of the JI's - 'Spot On'!
Naw, I vote for "Pirl's Pick".
Or 'Pirl's Jewel'.
Good one!
All my friends gang up on me while I'm gone!
Actually, it's "Pirl's Pleasure" to entice anyone to the wonderful world of JI's.
Lovely name Pirl, and we weren't picking honest!
We could have a whole line of JIs named Pirl's ______.
I see some sibs in that list too. Good picks!
Or Siberian irises named Polly ______?
Thanks, Pixie. I knew it was for fun and I did enjoy it.
I like all those names. Pirl you'll just have to create enough hybrids to fulfill all the names. I almost forgot the SIB Steve in honour of two of my favorite people.
I'd like to try it this year.
Thanks, Jan, for the info---my zone is 5, but I live on top of a very exposed hill--very windy, ledgy (nice in thunder storms), & soil dries quickly. I usually don't touch a rose unless it says hardy to zone 4. My successes have been with rugosas & Explorer series from Canada. My art teacher, who lives 30 min. to the west of me, is in a sheltered spot, & has the Austin by a brick patio & deck---it's a double white, very floriferous, & I drool when I see it!
Alright, because you all are such wonderful enablers, I need some advice. I have a useless chimney (the house has no fireplaces, why does it need a chimney?) on the back of my house. It's about 18"wx18"dx20'+tall. I've decided it would look nice with Roses climbing up it. So, question 1) I'd like to put two at the base of it so that they mix as they grow, contrasting colors, can I do that? I was thinking one at each corner. 2) Any recommendations? I'm thinking pastel colors.
After this I'm not allowed to buy or order anything else until I've actually dug all the beds and planted what I've ordered/bought so far. I've even been really good and not registered on the Lily Auction so that I can't bid on anything. I just keep reminding myself, I'm getting DL's from Pirl. I'm getting DL's from Pirl. LOL That reminds me, assuming the weather cooperates this weekend, is it too early to start the spring cleanup and killing the grass where all my new beds are going to be in the backyard? I'm hoping that by concentrating on that I won't give in to the urge to buy more plants. Granted that's why I'm not allowed to go to any of the local nurseries or Costco or Home Depot or Walmart or anywhere that I might possibly be tempted to buy *more* Gladiola bulbs or Dahlias or Crocosmia or... well, you guys get the picture.
How do you plan to attach them to the chimney??
I was figuring on some sort of trellis.
I love New Dawn.
I saw your pic. That's what really got me thinking when I went outside to take some measurements. Thoughts on a second color to mix in with it?
Something much deeper. Or do a clematis instead.
That's a thought. I'll have to take a look at what I already have on order. I've mentally rearranged my garden so many times and I haven't even gotten anything yet. It's going to be...interesting. LOL
