What's In A Name

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Amy, *I* was all set to say "no, never, well, hardly ever." but I just was not attending to my threads as I ought!

belleville, NJ(Zone 6a)

Whew.
i'm glad someone caught that!
thanks, Carrie!

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

LOL I'm always stage left, or is it stage liberal. As long as my mother knows it, I do too, and then there's stuff I know that she doesn't! DD#2's middle school did Penzance last year or the year before, and it wasn't too bad, for 6th 7th and 8th graders who have never been out of the country, heard of a bobby or that the sun never sets on the British Empire. I give even more credit to the parents, who applaud wildly for everything, even when they don't get the jokes!

Windbalm - I like your story about your farmhouse and the man who sold it to you. It sounds like a nice place! Welcome to the NE Forum.....it's nice to have you and thanks for sharing your name story with us.

I have an uncle named Reeve. He has 5 sisters. When little, they called him brother, but one couldn't say it - came out "brudder", was shortened to Brud which stuck for life.

Upper Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 5a)

Welcome windbalm and Ned - enjoyed your stories!! Great to have you posting with us! Eleanor

ooops, Nedweenie - I didn't mean to unwelcome you!! LOL We are happy you are with us too, and I like your name story as well. I don't know how I zoomed right past you....sorry! Your name is a riot.... What a fun thread this is!

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Whoops as well, I was so busy being the modern major general with Amy I forgot the speed limit on zooming past posts. I like Windbalm - a lovely source and sound for a name, and Nedweenie, reminds me of when my tiny daughter (now age fourteen and no longer tiny) was three months old and still around five - six - seven pounds. We were in Italy for my DS's wedding and an Italian gentleman (who spoke no English) and I (who spoke no Italian) were talking about how little she was and he saidpiccola which means small and then he said piccolina which I think means tiny and i started saying piccolininina which doesn't mean anything but we both understood it to mean pretty darn tiny.

Thanks for the warm welcome, everyone. I've been lurking for a while, but not posting. NE sounds like such a fun group of folks, and I've already learned about some great ideas. :) Here's a picture of what it looks like around here lately. I'm anxious for spring!

Welcome windbalm! Sorry I missed your first post. Please feel free to post or start threads anytime! The more the merrier.

Windsor, CT(Zone 6a)

No offense taken, Donniebrook. And thanks for all the warm welcomes. Though I gotta say, I had a good laugh about that, as I've been around since 2006. I'm just on the shy side- and post every other blue moon!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

No shyness here! You're among friends so please post away! Everyone has something that makes the group better, wiser gardeners and people.

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Yo, Vic-Tor, you sayin' I ain't good enough for you, hunh?

You're always welcome here, nedweenie.

My name has to be easy so I can remember it, Iris because that is what we grow and MA because that is where I live. I grew up in WI and have been a Packer fan for 64 yrs. My DH doesn't like football (better with plants than I) cause he grew up on LI where you can grow more things. Brother has been a Packer fan longer than I have, lives in NM,doesn't grow flowers but before his hip replacement was a great weeder.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Hi Iris. You have lots of company here - many iris lovers here!

North Augusta, ON

And many more of us who have trouble remembering web names.

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

That's for sure. (Check out my alias. It's in the phone book, too, lol!) x, Carrie

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

nedweenie,
You explained the ned part but did you ever explain the weenie?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Yes - it's there Dave.

Sorry can't show pictures, don't have the right ones. DH and I prefer the median bearded irises.

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

I love all iris's.......I have some of the bearded ones and they are lovely. What does median mean? I'm not familiar with that.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I knew an Iris once. She was beardless, luckily.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

I knew one who was miniature.

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

I knew one with a pierced eyebrow!

Eglantyne is one of David Austin roses and it was my mother's favorit rose before she passed away.
Hence my DG name....so in a way it is to honor her.She was a terrific lady, very kind and loving.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Very nice tribute to your mother!

South Hamilton, MA

There are 4 classes of medians, standard dwarf 8"-16" and 3 other classes from 16"-27" with different characteristics. (intermediate, miniature tall, & border) TBs go from 28" up. and are the latest bloom in time of the bearded classes.

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

Eglantyne, nice story

belleville, NJ(Zone 6a)

I know a bank where the wild thyme blows,
Where oxlips and the nodding violet grows,
Quite over-canopied with luscious woodbine,
With sweet musk-roses and with eglantine:
There sleeps Titania sometime of the night,
Lull'd in these flowers with dances and delight

-Oberon, A Midsummer Night's Dream Act II

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

Wow Amy! You're almost as good as Don!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I love it when Stallone reads that...
