What's In A Name

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

That is great Eleanor!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Yes - great story, Eleanor.

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

Great story. That sounds like something I'd do to liven things up.

Upper Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 5a)

Thanks guys!! I was not the only one who livened things up during rehearsals and shows. Our poor director, who also wrote the shows, had to put up with a lot of fooling around. When one male cast member came out onto the stage during a show, and was exchanging lines with the leading lady (who was about to sing a solo) had something funny written on his fingernails, she just about lost it and couldn't continue. After that the director laid down the law - no surprises on stage during the show. I had a rule also - leave the piano player and the piano ALONE while I'm playing!! It got so this group of supposedly grown up men who acted more like 10 year carried things toooo far! I've been showered with confetti, had the piano keyboard mopped, been tickled all while trying to play the piano!! It's a lot of hard work but as you can see we all had fun! And I've been Phoebe since the first show!! Eleanor

Medway, MA(Zone 5b)

Eleanor, sounds like you go to a fun church!

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

Eleanor, For a long time, I kept reading your screen name as grammyphobe. Quite a difference by moving just 1 letter

Medway, MA(Zone 5b)

Does that mean she has a grammy phobia, or is she a gramophone?

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

Music by any other name would sound as sweet

Upper Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 5a)

It is a fun church most of the time!! They even gave me the name grammy!! At one of my DD's baby showers there were a lot of church friends there and after Sarah was finished opening her gifts, they gave me a card with some $$$ in it to help with things I needed at my house for the baby. On the card it said to our "award winning grammy" and I have became grammy - not gram, grandma, or nanna!! Eleanor

Does DGS call you "Grammy"? x, Carrie

Upper Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 5a)

Colin doesn't call me anything yet! He is having speech and language issues and says very few words. The other day he did point to my picture when I asked him where Grammy was. I have photos of his family members on a bulletin board and we are working on their names. He has said Mama and Dada but does not use them regularly. Eleanor

Eleanor ~

You always tell the sweetest stories.

Upper Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 5a)

Thanks Candyce! I'm blushing!! Eleanor

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

LOL

No need to blush.

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Eleanor,

My DSGS (my husband's son's son, my step-grandson) didn't speak for a very long time and when he did speak, he was missing important consonants. His family fretted about his hearing etc. he had speech therapy etc. now, at 6, he enunciates everything most beautifully! He could be a voiceover for National Geographic!

They have a girl for #2, who talks a mile a minute and then #3 is another little boy who really seems to be Deaf. Which is particularly hard as his father is a music teacher. We ought to learn ASL before we go to see him again.

It's reasuring to hear of others who have had language and speech problems and recieved help and succeeded. Carrie - I do hope your grandson #3 succeeds as well as grandson #1. How old is he? How much hearing loss does he have? Colin has an appointment on March 7 to be evaluated and hopefully then we will have some answers. We were reading a book about farm animals tonight and he attempted to make some animal sounds - or at least we thought they sounded like moo, baa, and quack!! Sometimes Colin acts like he doesn't hear us (or he is just tuning us out) and other times he seems to hear fine. Eleanor

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

It's more common than you think Eleanor. Usually works out just fine.

Upper Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 5a)

Thanks Dave! Eleanor

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Eleanor - They live in Salt Lake City and have not much in common with us (except, of course, these three adorable grandchildren). #3 is 18 - 20 months old - maybe more (yikes). He has hearing aids now. They can't test his hearing very accurately until he gets older. I think long term they're thinking he might be a candidate for cochlear implants - but they don't do that until you are as fully grown as you're going to be, so for a boy I guess 18 - 20 years old. Who knows what they will have invented by then?!

But then that was my rational about not saving for college. I figured since I had literally no extra money to save - I mean what's $500 in a good year every few years for 15 years - $2500? Divided by two kids? Better to spend it on books and music lessons and ice skates because either way, they're both going to need massive help with college. I was hoping the system would have changed by then now.

Oh well.

x, Carrie

Upper Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 5a)

Thanks Carrie - hope it all truns out OK for him!! I'll keep him in my prayers also. I had a deaf child in one of my music classes and by second grade I think he had the implants (my memory somethimes fails me). That was quite a few years ago and maybe they've changed things. I had two deaf children during my teaching career and no they didn't just sit in the corner. It was harder with the older boy cause the class was doing harder things but his interpreter taught us some sign language. The younger girl that I had was in special education and in that class it was easier to keep her involved - I had to do special things for each child so they could find success. We did a lot of simple songs with motions, sign language and feeling vibrations. There are a lot of things his father can do with him so he can enjoy music - especiall if the hearing aids allow him to hear some. Eleanor

We are currently working on a production of Medea starring a deaf actress, with an otherwise hearing cast, which is being staged by a local university here. It is very interesting.

I am glad for this thread!!!
It give me a chance to appolgize for my unimaginative nom de Dave's. It sounds like something a 12-yr old would don.
I tried several more appropriate names, things involving my name Melissa or my nickname, Bliss (long story- no, I was never an exotic dancer), but I was flummoxed every time by the fact that they were taken. Since "demure and refined" little Jax has been a tireless gardening supervisor- catching moles, voles, and the occasional leaf- I knew I needed him with me forever.
Dave47-
"Have I ever told you of Mrs. McCave,
Who had 23 sons and she named them all Dave?
Well, she did, and that wasn't a smart thing to do,
Because, when she wants one,
And yells 'Yoo-hoo, come into the house, Dave!'
She doesn't get ONE,
But all 23 Daves of hers come on the run.
This makes things quite difficult at the McCave's,
As you can imagine, with so many Daves,
That often she wishes that, when they were born,
She had named one of them Bodkin Van Horn..."
I wish I could remember the rest- it's by Dr. Seuss.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Like George Foreman's five or six sons, all named George! (Wonder if each has his own grill?)

belleville, NJ(Zone 6a)

they could all be grill-friends..?

Love the Dave quote, Jax! (or Melissa...)

Philipsburg, PA(Zone 5b)

My name is from my 80 year old farmhouse. It's the name given to my property by the elderly gentleman from whom I bought it. He made a sign for the end of the driveway out of a huge log sawed in half, with "Wind Balm" in white letters. I didn't really understand it until I started living there... it's nearly always breezy from the West, and often it's seriously blustery! But it's wonderful all the time, even now when hovering around the zero degree mark.

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

Melissa, Yes I do know that story. I love Seuss.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

As you can see I am totally lame at coming up with screen names. I did use a pretty good one on some other sites...dustmadmom. It may seem that I like to dust but I'm mom to Dustin and Maddison.
Ngam and schicken-love the names they're just too funny!

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

I did sorta think that the dust was getting to you until I read further.

Metro DC, MD(Zone 7a)

Even when I'm Wrong, I'm still Wright.

belleville, NJ(Zone 6a)

o, i bet you've NEVER used that one before, Wright?

Metro DC, MD(Zone 7a)

Never Ever.

belleville, NJ(Zone 6a)

What, never?

Metro DC, MD(Zone 7a)

lol ... you can call me Wrongie, if you like.

belleville, NJ(Zone 6a)

o, i thought we were going to do Gilbert & Sullivan.

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

My screen name is short for Debra Louise. One of my frineds started calling me deba-lu, and the way he said it sounded cute. I never liked my name before that.

Windsor, CT(Zone 6a)

I was called "Ned" ever since I could hear, since my siblings couldn't pronounce my full/real name- Janette.

Ned, Neddy, 'Nette, Nedricka, Nedwina, Nedweenie............you get the idea.

My sisters are Shay & Laino, and we call my mother Blueberry or Merf. It's alot like when you get a new pet and you end up calling it something different that evolves on its own. My brother had a dog "Hunter" that ended up "'Tato" (as in "Potato Head").

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Sisters are 'Jay Leno'!

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Understand completely!
Tiffany = aka 'Digger Doo'
Rick = 'Rickles'
Justin = 'Bugga-boo'
Nichole ='Picky-Nicky'
and the worst one is my brother Brian...my kids call him U.B.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

I leased a horse that was named High Speed Twist... and was called Ox

belleville, NJ(Zone 6a)

My Aunt Dolly (Dolores) was always called Annie by her husband, because of something that happened on their honeymoon (?) when they were at an amusement park with a shooting game - whatever she did there caused him to call her after Annie Oakley from that day through, gee, 40 or 50 years of marriage?!
