What's In A Name

Medway, MA(Zone 5b)

I had started a thread on the Cottage Garden Forum about Old-Fashioned Names for Flowers. In other words, flower nicknames.

So, it got me thinking - how did we all come up with our DG member names?

Mine is obvious - I love primroses!

I chose mine because we always seem to be having Nor'Easters here...and there was a really big one the year I signed up on DG, so it was sort of fresh in my mind. I'm terrible at coming up with forum usernames.

Was it "the perfect storm"?

Orange County, NY(Zone 5b)

Good topic! I'm half irish and I love bells of ireland.

Maine, United States(Zone 5b)

I love bells of ireland too, and used them in my wedding flowers.

Sue, no, not the "perfect storm"...just a big old blizzard about this time a few years ago. We do get a lot of 'em.

Phoenix, AZ(Zone 9a)

I have no imagination..............

Not much better!

"amethyst" =
my name is amy
i like purple
and in my late teens, i was involved with someone who was really into crystals. Amethyst is the stone of clarity, awareness, and stability. He gave me an amethyst, and for years i carried one with me everywhere i went. It's a name/identity that has stayed with me on and off though the years...

SM =
stage manager, what i do in theatre. (Also a job which requires clarity and stability.)

So it is sort of a combination of what i am and what i aspire to be.

And when i've combined the two to use online, the name has been free..!

I always felt like I had a lisp when I tried to pronounce it.

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

Mine's from Sofonisba Anguissola, a 16th century woman painter from Italy.

What? amethyst?
It isn't like "pithy statement" or "Athol, MA", the 1st of which has made me giggle for years, the 2nd i just found thanks to Carrie...

belleville, NJ(Zone 6a)

oops - xposted. Now Harper's ID is hard (for me) to figure out how to pronounce. So is Michaela's.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

No, Amy - the extra 's & m' throws me off.

belleville, NJ(Zone 6a)

no need to be pithy.

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

Lots of people have mentioned to me that they glance at my name and see "Son of a... "

Pronounce it like Sof-oh-NEES-baa

belleville, NJ(Zone 6a)

heehee.
Thanks - i know you told us at the RU, and i thought, "Ah-ha, that's it!" and then i forgot where the accent went.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

onewish1 came from ... the first year of aol opening.... i couldn't get a name to work.... how ever lame it may seem now.. that was my onewish that day... and I just stuck with it

Victor you crack me up... I am going to say it that way from now on because of you... bad Victor bad

heh heh...I have to admit, I'm guilty of reading it that way too, so I am glad to know the story behind your username. And slightly ashamed that I didn't know that, since I went to art school and all. The only other Italian woman painter I can remember is Artemisia Gentileschi.

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

Oooo, yeah. I love Artemisia Gentileschi too.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Thanks Allison. I find Sofonisba pretty easy to pronounce. I am sure I would have been more creative with my name but I was in a rush to join because I had used up all the free PF searches!

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

I am creative, but .....
I like seeing my own name in big blue letters!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

And we haven't seen it in a while! Where have you been hiding? How is the baby?

belleville, NJ(Zone 6a)

ok.
gee.
i used to like my user name - i had no idea it was difficult.
i guess i should have put a - or a _ in between.
in my email it is amethystSM - i'm not sure why i didn't do that here. Would that make it easier?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

It's not that big a deal!

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

Mine is for 'not good in the a.m.' I am definitely not a morning person, I am better than I used to be however. Everything improves with age?
I'm glad to hear about your name Amy, that extra SM confused me I must admit.

belleville, NJ(Zone 6a)

hahahaha - that is funny.
i think i remember you explaining that in the past - before that, i thought it was an Asian word or name...

belleville, NJ(Zone 6a)

Right now in my aim buddy list, there is one other person online whose ID ends with SM, and another ending with LD (lighting designer). But i know other examples of each...

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Yes, I remember that explanation too - very clever.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

In case you forget what each other does??

belleville, NJ(Zone 6a)

no, it makes it easier to remember people's e-mails. better than adding strings of numbers to your e-mail address.

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

Amy, I just read your ID as 'amethyst-ism'. I think my mind needed to insert a vowel in with all those consonants.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Vanna White?

Medway, MA(Zone 5b)

Well, Amy, I'm glad it's "sm" and not "s & m" as Victor tried to insinuate!

Harper, what is it about that artist that made you choose her name? Are you an artist?

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

Ha, good one Victor.

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

Yes, Sue. I remember her from when I took my Women in Art History class in Art School. I like her work and her name. Besides, too many people used Artemesia's name, so I picked a lesser known artist.

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

Contestant, Victor. Can I buy a vowel?

Medway, MA(Zone 5b)

Harper, I just realized that, since you said you wouldn't be around as much due to helping your son, you've been around an awful lot. Yay!

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

I know. It's so hard to stay away! He hasn't had any homework for the past two days because of the storm. That, and I'm lonely for conversation.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Yes - where else will you talk about dead rodents and Renaissance women painters?
