Best/ worse/ ? did you learn today #30 visit with friends...

Victoria Harbour, ON

Good at outside gardening..NOT inside..thought you all needed a laugh..next to my plant is the card from my 'secret pal' so maybe the kindness and love sent in the package can rub off on this plant..nope, think I better trach it as I did with all the others...even went as far today as to go on back deck and bring in the big urn of imitation geraniums to make me feel better!

Want you to know though I did bring 2 geraniums and puts them in back bedroom in the fall as they ARE growing like weeds...

Wins some and then some you don't...lol

Glenview, IL

ahahaha, you sure make me gigle alot.
Well, today seems to be a quiet and leisurely day for all.
Kids are all off into rooms watching tv. We are still working on laundry too...LOL thats basically my only chore,
keeping up with laundry! Got way behind since i have been so busy with all these other things I am working on.
So, just doing that and DH just got a fire going...it only about 4 degrees outside so for now house is pretty quiet.

Wow, Ves, what a pretty lil pup. Will sure to be a fun playmate for TY and you. What's his name?

GG, Oh golly, what a big bummer with what happen to you...Murph is sure the stinker. Your star quilt just knocks me out! Grand job.

ROFL, Liz...you big blabber mouth. Oh gosh, just another machine to aggetate me. But you didn't tell the whole story...so I will Betty too funny, cuz I was learning how to add phone #'s to the phone, Haha..had to make sure it worked too so you know have to press dial to be sure it was entered right, LOL I talked to 5 other people tooo.
...DH came down to see who I was talking too...Had to just laugh cuz when I told him...he said the same LIZ you just talk to for 4 hours the other day, what on earth do you talk about...LOL everything and anything! He said well don't know how you could talk that long on the phone...I said what difference does it make if she or any of my friends were here we would be talking too. So...decided I better stay off the phone today. Grinning.

Yep Betty, his thing is if I am not on computer, I am on the phone...Ah well he is getting used to it. He wanted me to get some friends and I did!!

So, Glad you got to have GSs over and spoil them up...They look pretty content with their goodies, yum.
...sorry about your plant...just al ittle snickr...Only cuz I have only one that looks to be in the same state...All others are healthy.

Gita, Wow how beautful your living room is with all the plants in the window.

....oh HAPPY day!! Birdie is molting, Spring is arriving....OOP Next load to do.

Shar, Hope you have taken some pictures of your visit...Havent seen how your Lil man has grown in a bit.

Pacifica, CA

lol judy, i hear the same song and dance here to ..

he even told his daughter oh she'll be on the phone for hours

Victoria Harbour, ON

Too funny Judy/Liz..you gabbers...well almost finished my blue heron except for copper which will be done in a few weeks..thank goodness yet another project done..seems they are all pretty well caught up so come on SPRING I've plenty of time to play...

Guess what, made homemade soup, lemon cake with chocolate frosting and ham..AND not 1 thing burnt (SO FAR!) gaining ground..

It's just that kind of day..laze around..still in my jammies..what a weekend...

Have a confession though, I'm feeling bad about it..got a call from Harvey about an hour ago, always starts with 'hello darling' what you up to today..so just in case he'd say I'm visiting said I was going out with girlfriend for supper..then he started to tell me that he was feeling poorly..he drives transport and was in Kentucky when a van hit a lady, her vehicle bounced back into oncoming traffic and he ran over the vehicle..said he stayed in Kentucky for part of the week to get vehicle repaired and he wasn't up to driving..so instead of inviting him over, we talked and I said goodbye..

Now I did this for 2 reasons, one his 2nd wife and he aren't getting along at all and don't want him to think this could be his 'safe haven' and secondly I'm just not ready to even entertain men as friends...sad I guess..should be helping out old friends...one day I'll talk to him about it...

So feeling bad on that issue...

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Oh, Betty!!!!
What WAS it??????....:o) Looks like either a Wandering Jew or some sort of Philodendron. Please tell me!

You know---it just is NOT worth it! I mean to try to keep something like that alive. It is taking up space where something else could sit. Let's bow our heads and trash it! OK?
Don't mind me being blunt here, but I prefer to say it like it is and NOT beat around the bush. Gets me in trouble sometimes, but then again people come to me and ask me my opinion b/c they know that I will give them an honest one. They appreciate that.

I have a philosophy about plants. If it gets sick or if it is straggly-- or struggling to make it-- it just is not worth it to me. Out it goes! They are all--mostly--replaceable! I just don't understand why people try to nurse some small cutting of, say a Coleus or an Impatiens, when you can buy a whole market pack of it in the Spring for $2! Same goes for growing common plants from seed--and for the same reason. I understand that if the plant is a rare cultivar, or unusual, I would do it too. I would put out an effort to try and save it.

I guess this outlook comes from having held 4-5 jobs that had to do with caring for Houseplant Departments and also working for 2 growers. EVERYTHING that arrives there, or is grown there, is perfect and healthy, so that has become MY norm as well.

Then there is also knowledge--knowing what does overwinter well inside and what does not....and not wasting time to mess with the ones that do not. As an example--I know that these plants will be struggling (unless you have a really bright windowsill or a sun-room or greenhouse):

Wandering Jew--some potted up annuals--Asparagus Fern--some Begonias--Coleus--Herbs--Ferns--ANY perennials--Tree or Shrub cuttings--Roses--etc. Running out of suggestions here.........I know there are many more.

Basically--there are plants for OUTDOORS and then there are plants for INDOORS! Indoor plants can be taken outside for the warm season if you watch the light /humidity requirements. Outdoor plants cannot, necessarily, be brought inside to be "saved" for next year. YES! I know there are exceptions to both categories--so please do not jump down my throat! I will give you an example.

I LOVE trailing, variegated Ivy in my container plants. I also know that it takes Ivy about 2 years to become a fairly substantial plant suitable for a large container. I also know that SOME Ivies are perennial.
SO-----I dig my variegated Ivy up every year and put it in 6" pots and it does very well indoors. I do the same thing with my Dragon Wing Begonias. Dig them right up out of my beds and keep them by a window. They make a mess, of course, with their forever dropping blooms but, I won't have to pay $3 for a 4" pot of Premium Annuals in the Spring.

Last Summer I bought a D.W. Begonia in a 10" HB-- end of the season--$5! "End of Season" is, like, end of June here. MANY more months for it to grow! I often do this, and then just plop the HB plant (out of the pot, of course) in a 20" planter and I have an instant Patio plant. I do this with geraniums as well. I have that 20" pot of D.W. Begonia sitting by my back door in the kitchen. It was already gorgeous last Summer. Can't wait for it this year!!!! NICE plant to have in containers!!!

ALL my indoor plants go outside for the Season! Every one of them!!! They love it--but you have to remember which ones need light and which ones do not. And, strangely enough, none of them really suffer a whole lot when I bring them back indoors. Oh, some leaves my drop as it adjusts to the lower light and humidity, but that's about it.

I apologize for going off to this tangent--but I would rather talk plants and gardening than anything else. That IS my "forte"!

OK! I am bracing for all your comments.......:0(...PLEASE be kind!!!!

Gita

Victoria Harbour, ON

Too cute Gita..yep you know your stuff..couldn't understand why Lydia who was going to Florida for winter brought me all these plants..am sure she's heard I don't do well with keeping them alive...lol understatement for sure...and I'm much in the same mind..come spring I'll purchase all new ones...

I did bring in an ivy though and it's in that back room..perhaps it's the sunlight in the back room..anyway, checked on it this morning and it has a flower..does ivy flower???never knew it..

Did learn something today though..my gardening book said if you put daisies in fresh flower arrangement it will such the life out of all the other flowers and cause them to wilt...hmmm have to keep that in mind as well...

I'm off for supper, then it's clean up time in the craft roof and am proud of my accomplishments this weekend...
2-butterflies for Mother's Day gift...a thank you clock window for Cliff and Bernice and I finally finished the 3' glass blue heron which will be the focal point of a water feature...just have to wax and shine it when I have time..perhaps tonight....made sure everything was spotless upstairs..laundry and ironing done, soup made, cake and ham..wow I've done 99% of what I had hoped for..except that is for getting dressed today..

Pretty babydolls with pink flowers...oh they are SOOO comfy!

I KNOW I KNOW i get to move to the head of the class its judys birthday lol

Victoria Harbour, ON

Just don't want to forget dear 'Judy' on her special day..know she's been celebrating all month but we'll have to add our 'happy birthday's'

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Oh, Betty!!!!

Your Heron is beyond beautiful! I don't know HOW you know to do all these things?????

February 11th is also very special to me. It is my oldest daughter's B-Day! She is the one who lives here--nearby. She will turn 43!!!!! AAAGGHHHH! Do I actually have children THAT old????? For her B-Day, I took her to her favorite hairdresser and paid $110 for a blond highlights job on her hair. When she was younger--her hair was the most awesome, honey blond. All through High School and many years after. Now, as she is getting "older", her hair is a light brown. Weird---how that happens! WHY????/

My other daughter (in Seattle) will turn 40 end of April! Double AAAAGGGHHHH!!!!!

AND--Betty---your Butterflies are so beautiful--as are your angels! The way you always talk about doing this and that, sounds like it would take you 10 minutes to do it. You are just amazing!!!! I tire just thinking about all you do in a day.

I think, each and every one of us here, are AMAZING in out own way! And it is so wonderful that we all recognize the talents of each other. And for those of you that have posted and said that you have NO talents--YES! You do!!!! Stop putting yourself down and start recognizing the things you ARE good at!!!!! Learn to be INTROSPECTIVE!!!!!

Gita

Victoria Harbour, ON

Thanks for the compliments Gita..as you say we all have our forte..

I played here all day because I was not as fortunate as all of you to be able to get outside..some days it's as though you are in prison..unable to go outside...

So, thought I'd take a photo of the storm from out of my living room window, strangest thing..

the first photo looks as though there are two little angels flying nearby...

The 2nd, goodness knows...

Any ideas...

Maybe I should be worried..lol

Betty, what kind of camera do you have? It looks like the exposure was left open too long. Did you try it without the flash?

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Betty------You may have "Spirits" in your life!!! Flash-Smash! No way!

Those kind of light trails are often found on negatives if there are Spirits around......OOOH!

Assuming you had NO light sources, it is hard to explain! I am with you--maybe they are Angels that live around your house.......

Lets look at the "wonderful"--NOT the speculative!!!

Gita

Glenview, IL

Aww..You are so sweet to be thinking of me. Made me smile.

Your blue heron is Just wonderful!! What an esquisit piece of art to add to add to your garden.

Gita, Seems you have a wonderful gift to garden. it's nice that you continue to enjoy the knowledge.

Betty. UH, I do see some things, figures in your photos! In the first, lloks to me like someone sitting on a chair or something. ..and kind of to the right of the flash...I see two eyes and an o shape for a mouth!! Alsmost looks like halloween deoration only all white!

The second...Not sure, but i beleive the white statics are spirits. Maybe they are hoving around to keep you safe...Have you taken any more photos?? Be interesting to see the same shots at a different time.

Amazing what film catches. Dont think you have to worry though.

One last try to show you what's going on in my world..what will morning bring..still doesn't capture what I'd like to show you...

Calvert City, KY(Zone 7a)

Just a fast stop by, there are several good articles today, but one of them called Skyscape Roses by Gloria Cole gives me some really good ideas for outside this summer.....I thought you all might like to check it out. Just a thought for those of you with already amazing gardens....also there is one on roses, it's good too. I just thought the skyscrape idea, growing roses up old dying trees, was such a great idea.

Still got my Ethan....back after the millions of books we read for bedtime.

Morning all,
Draggin behind as usual...LOL
Great posts from you all..loving all the pthos and stories to go along with them.

Jeannine..I love the balance of your new quilt top. Hope the fencing keeps Murphy under control..
I hope your eye gets better soon..you will have to tell us about all the comments and winks you get today.

Betty your boys have such happy sweet faces..
Your talent with stained glass is wonderful..great blue Heron indeed! I was watching a TV show on the weekend and for a few moments there was a lady who showed how to foil the edges after sanding the edges..she was making a stained glass insert for a kitchen cupboard.

Ves..I hope your new dog settles in..with you and you TY. They look like a good match. Is he barking yet?
Maybe he is being on his good behaviour do you will for sure keep him. :)

Gita..I love it when you get on your soapbox..you put a grin on my face. Can't wait to pick your brain when it is garden season. Marjorie Mason ..says the same as you..(a garden expert on the radio) Toss it if it isn't performing. She said to one listener last week.."I give you permission to toss it on the compost pile"

Liz....good for you..you are right on top of things..funny about your long phone calls with Judy. I often talk with my sister for an hour..and I thought that was long...

Rachie...did you get some seeds planted on the weekend? Your puppy Scrappy is cute with....learning with "Daddy"....Carl's birthday last week..and this week Valentine's for you two "almost" newlyweds.. Ahhh love...we more "mature ladies" can remember.....

Don't think we will be keeping the new dog. I don't have the feeling he will work. Don't know if I have the knowledge to make it work or the time. He will make someone a nice pet. But we don't think he is for us.
I feel so guilty!

Happy Birthday Judy!!!!!
